One can own a book in two ways. The first is to pay for it, just as you pay for clothes or food. But full ownership (所有权) comes only when you have made it a part of yourself. The best way to make yourself a part of it is by writing in it.
There are three kinds of owners. The first has all the best sellers, but he or she reads none of them. The second has a lot of books. But most of them are as clean as on the day they were bought. The third has a few dog—eared (翻折的) books, which are marked (做标记) from front to back.
Why is marking a book necessary? First, it keeps you awake. And reading is thinking. Second, writing helps you remember the thoughts you had. Also, writing helps us remember the thoughts the writer expressed (表达).
