If you don't know where to go with your kids when you have time in the UK, I think I can give you some help.

    The Natural History Museum

Best for: Babies to early teens

    Eden Project

Why to go: Do you want to experience the sights(风景), smells and sounds of a rainforest? Do you want to walk through rows of orange trees and lemon trees? You can do all of these without leaving the UK at Eden Project. Children here can learn about the relations between plants and people and learn about different climates(气候)and habitats(栖息地).

That day, I felt the world seemed wrong and I came to the park. The park bench(板凳) was free as I sat down. Just then a young boy out of breath ran towards me. He stood right before me with his head down and said with great excitement, "Look at what I found!"

In his hand was a flower, and what a pitiful(可怜的) sight(景象), with its petals(花瓣) all worn(磨损)— not enough rain, or too little light. Wanting him to take his dead flower and go off to play, I nodded.

But he sat next to me and smelt the flower. He said with surprise, "It surely smells pretty and it's beautiful, too. That's why I picked it. Here, it's for you. "The flower before me was dying or dead. But I knew I must take it, or he might never leave. So I reached for the flower, and replied, "Just what I need."

But instead of placing the flower in my hand, he held it in the air. It was then that I noticed for the first time that the boy could not see. He was blind.

I was very surprised. I thanked him for picking the best one. "You are welcome, " he smiled, and then ran off to play.

Through the eyes of a blind child, at last I could see the problem was not with the world. The problem was me. And for all of those times I myself had been blind.

And then I held that flower up to my nose and breathed in the smell of a beautiful rose.

    1. (1) The boy is one of the writer's friends.
    2. (2) The boy's head was down because he was not happy.
    3. (3) The writer wanted the boy to leave him alone at first.
    4. (4) The rose was beautiful and smelled very good.
    5. (5) The passage tells us that we should learn to find the good sides in life and enjoy life.

When you cut your skin, you bleed(流血). If a person loses a lot of blood, he will become ill and may die. Blood is very important. People have always known that. At one time, some people even drank blood to make them strong!

When doctors understand how blood goes around inside the body, they try ways of giving blood to people who need it. They take blood from the healthy people and give it to the people who need it. This is called "blood transfusion". The blood goes from the arm of the healthy person into the arm of the sick person.

But there are two problems. First, it does not always work. Sometimes people die when they have blood transfusion. Later, doctors find that we do not all have the same kind of blood. There are four groups—O, A, B and AB. We all have blood of one of these groups. They should give people the right kind of blood. I have O group blood and the doctor told me I could give blood to anyone else safely.

There is another problem. To give blood of the right kind, doctors have to find a person of the right blood group. Often they cannot find a person in time. If they have a way to keep the blood until someone needs it, they can always have the right kind of blood. At first, they find they can keep it in bottles for fifteen to twenty days. Then they find how to keep it longer. In the end, they find a way of keeping blood for a very long time.

    1. (1) The underlined word transfusion in the passage means "_________" in Chinese.
      A . 输送 B . 交通 C . 净化
    2. (2) Sometimes people die during blood transfusion because ___________.
A . they are unhealthy people B . they have lost a lot of blood C . they are not given the right kind of blood
    3. (3) Doctors can find a person of the right blood group _____________.
      A . at any time B . in time often C . with difficulty
    4. (4) Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A . Doctors can give any kind of blood to the writer. B . The writer can give blood to people who have B group blood. C . Doctors can keep blood in bottles for a very long time.
    5. (5) Which is the main idea of this passage?
A . It's mainly about the importance of blood. B . It's mainly about some knowledge about blood transfusion. C . It's mainly about the blood groups.
