Cao Siyu, born and raised in Beijing, left home at 20 to study in the US and, in the UK. Now she works in Paris, France, she has a better understanding of both Chinese and Western cultures. She started drawing the web comics to help people understand different cultures. Using her pencil, Cao also wants to build a bridge between different cultures.
Tiny Eyes Comics, first created in late 2016, tells the stories of a Chinese girl named Tiny Eyes. Cao has posted more than 300 comics online and they attracted about 41, food, different ways of thinking and social customs.
This year, COVID—19 has made her realize how important it is to help people from different cultures to communicate with each other. One of her comics shows the cultural differences about wearing masks. "To wear or not to wear, that is the question" has been heatedly discussed. In the comics(感染), as well as avoiding passing the virus to others.
One of her comics shows different ways of expressing love. In her comics, an American girl tells her mother directly that she loves her over the phone; the girl Tiny Eyes expresses her love by asking her beloved ones about their health and buying nice things to make their life more comfortable. Another difference between the Chinese and Westerners is about hot water. French restaurants always serves parking water(气泡水); in the US, restaurants serve iced water, people drink hot water a lot.
