Mr. Hunt's family is very poor. Because of that, he is in school for only three years and he has to stop to help his parents though (尽管) he is good at his lessons. When he is sixteen, he comes to the city and begins to work in a small factory. He learns from an old worker and six years later, he becomes a good worker. The old worker likes him and marries (嫁) his daughter to him. The young man does not have a house so he has to live with his parents-in-law (岳父母). His mother-in-law always thinks he isn't rich and often chatters (唠叨).
It is one fine Sunday. The old woman wants to have a trip on the top of the hill. She tells Mr. Hunt to drive her car. But sometimes she tells him to turn left (左转) and sometimes to turn right. The young man has to listen to her. At a crossing, the lights turn red but she makes him turn left. The policeman stops them.
"If I did wrong, sir," says Mr. Hunt, "It is my mother-in-law's fault (过错). She is driving the car though she sits behind me. "
