Chris loved to watch birds. He spent hours watching them eat every day. For his birthday, his grandfather signed him up (报名) for a birdwatching trip to the Oak Tree Wildlife Refuge. Chris couldn't wait to see his favorite bird, the woodpecker (啄木鸟).
The day of the trip came and Chris and his grandfather got up early to arrive at the Oak Tree Wildlife Refuge. The guide, Stephanie, talked to the group as they walked. "Look at the woodpecker in that tree."Chris looked at the woodpecker."The woodpecker lives mainly on the insects (昆虫) that live in the trees,"said Stephanie.
Chris opened his notebook and began to write notes. Stephanie added,"If people cut down many trees, the number of insects will decrease (减少). Then it will be difficult for the woodpecker to find food here."
"So we should not cut down trees, but plant more trees to help woodpeckers,"Chris said and wrote more notes. Then he asked,"How does a woodpecker not fall off the tree? It's so high up."
"That's a good question, Boy. That's because the woodpecker has a long neck and a heavy, pointed beak (鸟喙)," Stephanie replied."The woodpecker uses them to make holes in trees. It has special feet to help it hang on to trees. Two toes face forward. The other two toes face backward. Most birds only have three toes."
Chris learned a lot about the woodpecker. He had many notes written down. Stephanie began walking to find some other birds and the group followed.
Chris smiled at his grandfather. He was happy his grandfather gave him such a great birthday gift.
