Chris loved to watch birds. He spent hours watching them eat every day. For his birthday, his grandfather signed him up (报名) for a birdwatching trip to the Oak Tree Wildlife Refuge. Chris couldn't wait to see his favorite bird, the woodpecker (啄木鸟).
The day of the trip came and Chris and his grandfather got up early to arrive at the Oak Tree Wildlife Refuge. The guide, Stephanie, talked to the group as they walked. "Look at the woodpecker in that tree."Chris looked at the woodpecker."The woodpecker lives mainly on the insects (昆虫) that live in the trees,"said Stephanie.
Chris opened his notebook and began to write notes. Stephanie added,"If people cut down many trees, the number of insects will decrease (减少). Then it will be difficult for the woodpecker to find food here."
"So we should not cut down trees, but plant more trees to help woodpeckers,"Chris said and wrote more notes. Then he asked,"How does a woodpecker not fall off the tree? It's so high up."
"That's a good question, Boy. That's because the woodpecker has a long neck and a heavy, pointed beak (鸟喙)," Stephanie replied."The woodpecker uses them to make holes in trees. It has special feet to help it hang on to trees. Two toes face forward. The other two toes face backward. Most birds only have three toes."
Chris learned a lot about the woodpecker. He had many notes written down. Stephanie began walking to find some other birds and the group followed.
Chris smiled at his grandfather. He was happy his grandfather gave him such a great birthday gift.

29-year-old Shi Yilong has done many different jobs before, like being a sports player, director (导演), driver ... And now he is doing something new.
Shi started to learn rollerblading ( 直排轮滑) when he was 15. Then he won the second prize in a world competition at age 17. When he was 23, he started learning skateboarding ( 滑板运动). He found he was very interested in the new sport."As soon as I got on the skateboard, I felt I was free,"Shi said.
However, skateboarding was not very popular at that time. And Shi couldn't find a place to practice and a good skateboarder to learn from. So Shi and his friends decided to learn from videos. To help others who are interested in skateboarding learn more about the sport, Shi now makes videos by himself.
As the sport is becoming popular, Shi has more places to practice. When he goes to a place with his skateboard, he often meets people with the same hobby. He makes friends with some of them. Thanks to his love for the sport, Shi has even started his own company (公司).
Skateboarding is an important part of Shi's life."If you do one thing for many years, you will have your rewards,"Shi said. "I have done what I love for many years. From a poor boy to a person with his own company, all I have got comes from love."
When you hear the word"art", you might think of paintings in museums. But art isn't always inside, and you don't always have to pay to see it. In fact, you can see some really interesting art for free in public spaces around the world.
Some public art doesn't just make a place look beautiful. In Las Palmitas, a town in Mexico, people worked together with a street art group to paint their houses in bright colors. The result was a large painting that can be seen from kilometers away. As people worked together on it, they saw how the art brought happiness to their neighborhood."In the morning, you wake up and look around and see the colors,"said a local man."It's very beautiful."
Public art can also send a message. In 2014, British artists Paul Cummins and Tom Piper placed many ceramic (陶瓷) flowers on the ground around the Tower of London. The flowers represented (代表) those who died in World War I. The artists wanted visitors to think about and remember those people by doing that. Months later, the flowers were sold, and the money went to people in need.
▲ In 2010, the Icelandic artist Bjargey Ólafsdóttir created the Red Polar Bear in Iceland. It showed the red outline (轮廓) of a polar bear on the snow. Ólafsdóttir wanted to make people think about the polar bear and how its environment is changing.
Of course, sometimes public art is there just because it can make people happy. One example is the Floralis Genérica in Buenos Aires, a large metal (金属的) flower in a pool. It opens every morning and closes every evening. It's wonderful.

I had a great time with my classmates last Sunday. That day, Alice (邀请) us to her birthday party. Almost all of us chose to (接受) the invitation. I got there early as I was (有空的). Everyone did something helpful to prepare for the party. And we were (高兴) to spend a good time with each other.
During the (日间), we sang, danced and played instruments (乐器). This made the party look like an exciting (音乐会)! In the evening, we discussed the title " What I want to be when I grow up ". No one ( 拒绝) to tell his or her dream. We didn't stop talking (直到……才) Alice told us a story about a 15-year-old boy who made a model plane on his own in less than a month. All of us were really (惊奇的). The boy's name is Li Banghua. After he finished his high school entrance
(入门) (考试), he threw himself into the work of making the model plane right away. When talking about his future, the boy said he dreamed of becoming a plane engineer. We were interested in the boy and his dream. We hoped that both his dream and ours could come true.
The World Cup is one of the most popular sporting events in the world. The 2022 World Cup arrived Qatar. The country built a few new stadiums (体育场) to serve the event. The Al Bayt Stadium is one of (they).
The stadium is in the city of Al Khor. It takes the shape of the bayt al sha'ar — a (tradition) tent in Qatar. The tent is a fine example of Qatar's rich past. With the country's rich history, the Al Bayt Stadium welcomes (guest) from all over the world.
What's more, the stadium is excellent in its green practices. tent-like stadium's roof (屋顶) helps the cooling system (系统) to keep football fans and players cool without using extra power (额外的能量).
The green practices do not stop at the stadium. They also play a big role outside the stadium. For example, visitors can (easy) find taxis and buses around the stadium, they don't have to drive their own cars. Fewer cars mean (little) air pollution. Also, there are lots of parks, lakes, and green spaces outside the stadium. They make Al Khor greener and the people in the city would love (spend) their time there. With all of these, the city of Al Khor looks forward to (meet) more people in
the future.
We need people who can write good stories. You can write about whatever you want but here's some advice for you before you start writing:
●
Love, family and problems with friends are the main subjects of the stories. However, you need to turn ordinary situations (平常的情况) into something interesting that people will want to read about.
●
It's no good giving a description (描述) of a town or telling readers how an engine (发动机) works if you get it wrong. So get your facts right and don't write anything that you're not sure about.
●
Make the beginning interesting and the ending a surprise. There is nothing worse than a bad ending. Develop the storycarefully and try to think of something unusual happening at the end.
●
Try to bring the characters in your story alive for the readers. Use well-chosen words to make them seem real.
Your story must be your own work, between 2,000 and 2,500 words. The closing date is 31 December and we will inform (通知) the winner within one month of this date.
A. Get your facts right. B. Think about the characters. C. Write about what you know. D. Catch the reader's attention (注意力). E. Read more books to get ideas for your story. |
The advice in the passage is about how to . (不超过三个单词)
