Sun Yat-sen was called the Father of Modern China. He was born on November 12, 1866, in a poor farmer's family in Cuiheng Village, Xiangshan county.
When Sun was a child, he heard many stories about the Taiping Rebellion (太平天国运动) from a Taiping old soldier. At that time, he got the belief that "all men are born equal" in his mind.
At the age of thirteen, Sun went to live with his elder brother in Hawaii. Sun studied at the Lolani School where he learned English, math and science. While living in Hawai, Sun received a Western education and learned about Christianity.
In 1883, he was sent home to China by his brother. Later Sun studied medicine in Guangzhou and Hong Kong. He graduated from the College of Medicine for Chinese (Now the University of Hong Kong) in 1892 and got a license as a medical doctor. In 1894, he wrote a petition to Qing Viceroy(直隶总督) Li Hongzhang, but Li did not take his advice.
From 1895 to 1924, Sun's efforts to save the country continued and he gave all his life to the revolution to change old China. He is the architect of the 1911 Chinese revolution, which introduced the country to modern times. He founded the famous Huangpu Military Academy in 1924 in Guangzhou. He died of lung cancer in 1925.
