When Dave was eighteen, he bought a secondhand car for 200 so that he could travel to and from work more1than by bus. It worked quite well for a few years, but then it got so old, and it cost him so much in repairs that he decided that he had better2 it. He asked among his friends to see 3 anyone was particularly anxious to buy a cheap car, but they all knew that it was falling to pieces, so4of them had any desire to buy it. Dave's friend Sam saw that he was upset when they met one evening, and said, "What's up, Dave?
Dave told him, and Sam answered, "Well, what about advertising it in the paper? You may 5more for it that way than the cost of the advertisement!" Thinking that Sam's 6 was reasonable, he put an advertisement in an evening paper, which read "For sale: small car, uses very little oil, only two owners. Bargain at 50. "
For two days after the advertisement first came out, there was no 7. But then on Saturday evening he had an enquiry (询问). A man rang up and said he would like to8 him about the car. "All right," Dave said, feeling 9. He asked the man whether ten o'clock the next 10would be suitable or not. "Fine, the man said," and I'll bring my wife. We plan to go for a ride in it to 11 it. "
The next morning, at a quarter to ten, Dave12 the car in the square outside his front door, planning to wait there for the people who had answered his 13. Even Dave had to admit that the car really looked like a wreck (残骸). Then, soon after he had got the car as clean as it could be, a police car stopped just behind him and a policeman got out. He 14 Dave's car and then said, "Have you reported this15 to us yet, sir?" After hearing the words, what could Dave say?
If you can't be a pine on the top of the hill, Be a scrub in the valley. But be the best little scrub by the side of the river; Be a bush if you can't be a tree, If you can't be a bush be a grass. And make some highway happier, We can't all be captains, then just be sailors, But there's something to do for all of us here. There's big work to do, And there's a small thing to do, And the task you must do is the near. If you can't be a highway, then just be a footpath, If you can't be the sun, be _____▲_____; It isn't by size that you win or you fail Be the best of whatever you are! |
In a restaurant, a big bug (虫子) suddenly flew out of nowhere and landed on a woman. She started shouting out of fear. With a shocked face, she started jumping around with both her hands shaking, trying to scare away the bug. Her reaction (反应) was so strong that it made everyone in her group nervous. She finally got the bug off her, but then it landed on another woman in the group. Now it was her turn to continue the reaction.
A waiter rushed to their table. The second woman managed to get the bug onto the waiter. The waiter stood quietly and looked at the bug on his shirt.
While remaining calm, he carefully picked up the bug with his fingers and then threw it out of a window. People around him were surprised.
Watching the event go on, I started wondering: Was the bug the reason for their behaviors? If so, then why was the waiter not troubled? He solved the problem perfectly without any mess.
In fact, it was not the bug, but the ability of those people to deal with the trouble caused by the bug that influenced the women.
Then I realized that it was not the shouting of my father or my boss or my wife that influenced me, but my ability to deal with the trouble caused by their shouting that influenced me. It's not the traffic jams on the road that troubles me, but the lack of my ability to deal with the mess caused by the traffic jams that troubles me.
It is not the problem, but my reaction to the problem that creates trouble in my life.
①The waiter helped solve the problem.
②The big bug landed on a woman.
③The woman tried to get off the bug.
④The writer realized what created trouble.
According to a University of Michigan study, kids spent two fewer hours each week on outdoor activities in the early 2000s than kids did in the early 1980s. Indoor activities without moving are more popular. Most people in the study spend most of their free time watching TV (85%) or playing computer games (81%). "This causes over-weight, greater stress and more physical and emotional (情绪的) illnesses," says Richard Louv, a nature writer.
In fact, outdoor activities such as taking a friend along, kicking around a ball and taking photos can help. It is important for kids to play outside.
Firstly, outdoor activities open up your senses. You will feel better after spending time outside. "Surfing, camping and fishing help bring all of your senses to life," says Betsy Keller, a professor at Ithaca College in New York. "Smell, sight. they're all active when you're outside." With your senses get stronger, you'll feel free and more creative.
Playing outside helps your body. When playing outside, you can be on hills, beaches or lakes instead of a flat floor. Different areas offer special fun and challenge your strength and balance (平衡). It also helps keep your body's clock on track so that you sleep better at night and feel less sleepy during the day.
Outdoor play also makes your mind relax. Too much time indoors, such as watching TV or activities in non-green areas, may make it hard for kids to focus their attention and easy to feel stressed out. But staying in the nature helps them concentrate (全神贯注) and lowers their stress levels.
Besides, spending time outdoors brings you closer to the environment. Hearing the leaves crackle underfoot, breathing in fresh air, walking through the woods in search of cool birds remind you of the beauty of the nature. You needn't go to the countryside. ▲ . It can be your own backyard or that block of trees at the end of the street.
So the next time you sit down to spend time with a TV, consider treating yourself to a little outdoor play instead.
More than 1,000 schools across the UK have signed up to a project with the aim of helping schools become carbon neutral by 2030. Carbon' neutral means cutting down carbon emissions o zero or balancing them out in other ways. Carbon emissions are gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2) that come out into the atmosphere, where they make climate change worse. This has also caused the temperature rise.
Emissions are caused by all sorts of human activities, such as burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas) to make energy, cutting down forests and some types of farming. Becoming carbon neutral includes cutting the amount of carbon emissions a school produces and balancing those that are left by taking some carbon out of the atmosphere.
The project also shows how small changes can make a big difference. These might include thinking carefully about energy use, cutting waste, growing food closer to where it's eaten and waling or cycling to school if it is possible. Ways of balancing out the carbon emissions that a school still make include planting trees and plants that take in CO2 as they grow.
Ysgol Bro Dinefwr Secondary School in Wales has promised to run entirely on renewable energy (such as wind and solar power) within the next three years. At Down High School in Northern Ireland, the students are looking after their own bees. So when flowers and crops produce food, that helps. Other schools have projects to cut food waste by weighing it after each meal to know how much is not being eaten. Some put the waste into system that can turn this waste into useful things. They will be put on the garden to help plants grow.
Climate change is seen as major global challenge. We can it all around us. So join together, find out ways your school can put efforts to, and talk to teacher about signing up.

Dear Sir or Madame,
I'm writing this letter to offer my advice for a better town for teenagers. I (相信) there are many things that we can do to make life in our town a lot better for teenagers.
First of all, I think that our town needs more bicycle lanes (车道). A lot of teenagers in my town cycle (到处) but it's very dangerous because there is a lot of (交通,车辆). If there are more cycle lanes in future, it will be much (更安全的) for us.
Also, I want to say that we need more places for teenagers to go. In my (观点),we need more clubs and other places where we can meet. Teenagers won't cause (麻烦) in the street if there are more places for us to go.
In addition, teenagers here need more sports facilities (设施). There are places to play ball games like (网球) and football, but what about other sports, for (例子), skateboarding and rollerblading?
(最后), I am sure that we'll make the town better if we don't drop (垃圾). Our town will be much better for everyone in the future, if we can all do something to help now.
