At sunrise, parks and other public areas across China fill up with people doing Taijiquan. So, what exactly is Taijiquan and where does it come from?
Taijiquan, also known as Tai Chi, is one of China's most famous traditional forms of martial arts (武术). Martial arts can be different. Take Shaolin Wushu for example. It has a clear goal—to win a fight. One careless move can cause serious injury (受伤). It focuses on relaxed movements. Anyone who is good at it is able to move easily, just like water.
Wudang Tai Chi is one. It is said to have been invented by Zhang Sanfeng. It's said that he once watched a snake and a bird fighting. He was so impressed by the skills used by each animal. Then he made use of them to develop his own martial art.
It's our pride that China's Taijiquan has been added to UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (非物质文化遗产) in December, 2020.
