In July, China introduced the "double reduction(双减)" policy. It hopes to reduce schoolwork burden(负担)on primary and junior high school . The policy calls for reducing homework and after-school classes.
According to the policy, children below the third grade will not homework anymore. It should take no more than 90 minutes for junior high school students their homework. After-school training institutions(校外培训机构)are not allowed to extra education courses or advanced(超前的)teaching on weekends, holidays or winter and summer vacations. One month has passed since the new semester began. How do students feel about this new policy?
"Our homework is clearly less than before," said 13-year-old Shen Yuzhe from Beijing. According to Shen, students have time to process new knowledge now. "Our teachers are also giving us more chances to do experiments and learn from life," said Shen. "For example, we went to research earthworms(蚯蚓)in a field during a biology class. This is a much better to learn things than just hitting the books."
Shen also pointed out that when burden is lightened, self-discipline(自律)becomes the . "Some students now spend more time having fun homework is finished early. But if you use all the free time to relax, you might behind other students," he said.

When I was a girl growing up, I cannot once ever remember either my mum or my grandma wasting food.
Anything we didn't eat at one meal was leftovers(剩菜). I can remember my grandma making a huge pot of potatoes. We would all eat until we were full enough, but there were always about half of the potatoes leftover. A few days later, Grandma would take those potatoes out of the fridge, boil some noodles, add some vegetables and mix them all together. And I also remember when I watched my mum fry bacon (煎培根)for us in the mornings, she would always take the oil carefully and pour it into a bottle. Then she would use it later to add flavor to so many other dishes. I was an adult before I realized that potatoes didn't actually taste like bacon!
I learned their lessons well, and after I grew up, I tried to never waste food myself. I always planned the week's meals ahead of time and only bought what was on my shopping list so that nothing went to waste. Every meal went into our stomachs and any leftovers were later eaten by either myself my boys, my husband or, my dogs. To me, throwing food into the bin was just wrong.
However, when it comes to living, there are no leftovers. Life is just like a feast. Each moment that you don't live is lost forever. Life cannot be saved or stored. Each day is a fresh beginning. Live each moment of your life to the fullest, then.
Water is important to all living things but some areas in the world are short of water a lot. So we should try to protect and save water.
A group of students from Zhejiang University have successfully developed an "air hand-washing machine". The machine uses an infrared ray induction system (红外线感应系统), which can feel the presence of our hands. If it feels there are hands, the water with the air will come from the tap. And it has been proven that it is nearly as effective as traditional hand-washing. It uses only ten percent of the water that regular hand-washing does. The students have even set up a company to introduce the product to the public.
Li Qizhang, a member of the team that developed the machine, told a reporter that a model of their machine had already been placed in a classroom building at the university and it worked very well.
In 2014, a student called Chen Puyang first thought of the idea while he was washing his hands. Washing one's hands uses a lot of water, Chen thought. Would it be possible to replace the water with air? Others may not give the question a second thought. However, for Chen and Li, who were studying fluid mechanics (流体力学) at the time, this was considered to be an excellent idea.
Soon, Chen, Li and several classmates started on the project. After a year of research, the team came up with a gravity-driven (重力驱动) hand-washing machine successfully.
Scientists have long predicted that warmer temperatures caused by climate(气候)change will have the biggest influence on the world's poorest people. New research now suggests that has already happened over the past years.
A study coming out in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science found that in most poor countries, higher temperatures are more than 90% likely to have resulted in a fall in economic output(经济产量), compared to a world without global(全球的)warming. The influence has been less big in richer countries—with some even benefiting(获益) from higher temperatures.
"We're not saying that global warming created inequality(不公平)," says Noah S. Diffenbaugh, the writer of the study and a professor at Stanford University who studies climate change. But "global warming has slowed down the improvement". The poorest countries are facing the worst influence of rising temperatures—for which they are least responsible, he adds.
The new study builds on past research. A 2015 study in the journal Nature predicted that the average income(平均收入)) in the poorest countries will be 25% lower by 2100 compared to a world without warming, while some of the richest countries—like the USA—could experience an increase in income. And a report from IPCC, the UN's climate science body, showed that if global temperatures rise more than 1.5℃ by the end of the century, poor countries will likely face very serious challenges, including the disappearance of whole communities and millions of early deaths. "They will suffer the most, as they are already," said Mary Robinson, who used to be a UN Special Envoy on Climate Change and a president of Ireland.
The influence is greater elsewhere, especially in Sub-Saharan, African countries including Sudan, Burkina Faso and Niger, where climate change has driven the average income more than 20% lower. "There are a number of ways by which temperature influences economic activities," says Diffenbaugh What's clear is that, for poor countries, the news is all bad.
At sunrise, parks and other public areas across China fill up with people doing Taijiquan. So, what exactly is Taijiquan and where does it come from?
Taijiquan, also known as Tai Chi, is one of China's most famous traditional forms of martial arts (武术). Martial arts can be different. Take Shaolin Wushu for example. It has a clear goal—to win a fight. One careless move can cause serious injury (受伤). It focuses on relaxed movements. Anyone who is good at it is able to move easily, just like water.
Wudang Tai Chi is one. It is said to have been invented by Zhang Sanfeng. It's said that he once watched a snake and a bird fighting. He was so impressed by the skills used by each animal. Then he made use of them to develop his own martial art.
It's our pride that China's Taijiquan has been added to UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (非物质文化遗产) in December, 2020.
