UNESCO is part of the United Nations. It was started in 1945. In 1959, the temples at AbuSimbel in Egypt were in danger because of a new dam.UNESCO raised money to move the temples to a safe place. This success led to a new idea.
UNESCO, along with other groups, made a plan to protect important cultural and natural site around the world. This plan was accepted in 1972.
Today, there are about 800 UNERSO World Heritage Sites worldwide. Most of them are cultural sites. Italy and Spain have the most, followed by France and Germany. Every year, about 12 new sites are added to the list.
Countries that are members of UNESCO can suggest new sites. They give some of the UNESCO money to a special fund. The fund gets about $3.5 million a year. The money is used to take care of the sites and protect them from danger.
