Of all the 24 solar terms, Clear and Bright, the 5th solar term, is also a traditional Chinese festival, Qingming Festival.
Temperatures begin to rise and it rains more often during this period. The words "clear" and "bright" exactly describe the weather. As the name suggests, the most important event is to clear away grass around our ancestors' tombs and add some fresh soil. We also lay out the favorite food and wine for our ancestors in front of their tombs.
Flying kites is a much-loved activity during Qingming Festival. People often tie some little lanterns, which look like stars at night, to the kite or the kite string. People wish to take diseases away by doing this.
Qingtuan, a kind of round green cake, is popular on Tomb-Sweeping Day. In ancient times, women who wanted to have babies put boiled eggs into the river, then people picked them up to eat. It was said that the more eggs were eaten, the more chances the woman would have babies. Today, people eat eggs on this day for success and good health.
