Many people count the number of steps they walk each day. But how many steps should we take to stay 1 ? A new study has the answer.
The study was carried out by scientists from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. They looked at seven years of health and exercise results from more than 225, 000 2 around the world. These adults were around 64 years old. Some of them were in good health, 3 others weren't. According to the study, walking 4, 000 steps a day can help people to live well into old age. Walking can reduce the risk of dying from diseases.
"Four thousand steps is about a 30-to-45-minute walk, 4 about three to four kilometers," said Dr. Seth Shay Martin, one of the scientists. "It's not a magic number. You don't need to walk that exact number of steps."
He added that in fact people who walk an extra (额外的) 1, 000 steps a day have a 5 15 percent lower risk of early death. "The more steps you walk, the better!" he said.
