Many people count the number of steps they walk each day. But how many steps should we take to stay 1 ? A new study has the answer.
The study was carried out by scientists from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. They looked at seven years of health and exercise results from more than 225, 000 2 around the world. These adults were around 64 years old. Some of them were in good health, 3 others weren't. According to the study, walking 4, 000 steps a day can help people to live well into old age. Walking can reduce the risk of dying from diseases.
"Four thousand steps is about a 30-to-45-minute walk, 4 about three to four kilometers," said Dr. Seth Shay Martin, one of the scientists. "It's not a magic number. You don't need to walk that exact number of steps."
He added that in fact people who walk an extra (额外的) 1, 000 steps a day have a 5 15 percent lower risk of early death. "The more steps you walk, the better!" he said.

Dong Yuhui got his new job as an online salesman at EastBuy (东方甄选) in 2022. Before that, he had taught about 500,000 students English for 8 years. "When I first started to be a live streaming host (直播主播) and sell products online, there were only five viewers, which included my parents and the parents of another host. At that time, I felt quite down and sad. Those were the darkest hours," said Dong.
However, this 29-year-old live streaming host has got over 20 million followers now. What's the main reason of his sudden popularity? People realize that Dong is such a special salesman.
One morning, when selling Antarctic krill (南极磷虾), Dong taught viewers other related words in English like "lobster" (龙虾), "prawn" (明虾) and "shrimp" (小虾). When he sold steaks (牛排) online, he not only introduced them in both Chinese and English, but also taught how to order steak in English at a restaurant.
What's more, the viewers were also interested in his ideas on different literary works (文学作品). On June 9th, when Dong was introducing William Shakespeare and his poems, thousands of viewers flooded into his live streaming show. Some said that they never expected to actually learn something while buying things. Some even said they didn't know whether they should buy things or take notes.
Dong became famous overnight by turning his live streaming room into a language learning classroom. China Daily posted Dong's story and his unusual way of selling products. "I know a lot because I read a lot. Books give me strength, confidence and ideas, which make my mind and life rich. I take pleasure in reading. It____has shaped me in a great way," Dong told the reporter of CGTN in an interview.
I walked into a stranger as he passed by me. "Excuse me," I said. He replied with a smile and said, "Please excuse me, too. I didn't notice you." We apologized and went for our own ways.
Later that day, when I was cooking, my daughter was standing too near. When I turned to reach for some milk, I nearly knocked her over. "Move out of the way!" I shouted.
She walked away sadly. But I didn't feel like I had to apologize to her. While I was in bed that evening, my husband said to me. "While dealing with a stranger, you were polite. But with a daughter you love, you were unkind. Your daughter brought you some flowers that she picked herself this afternoon. You will find them in the kitchen by the door. Have you seen the tears in her eyes?"
I quietly went and sat down by my daughter's bed. "Honey, I am sorry," I said. "Are these the flowers you picked for me?" She said, "I found them by the tree. I picked them because they're pretty like you. I knew you'd like them, especially the blue ones." I tearfully replied, "Sweetie, I'm really sorry for the way I acted today. I shouldn't have shouted at you."
Teens today spend much time on social media (社交媒体). Short video apps have made things worse. You can see almost everything on these apps—jokes, role-play, scientific experiments and so on. With continuous scrolling (连续的滚屏), music and fun never stop. You could never find short video apps dull.
Some researchers wondered what influence short video apps might have on teens. A research team interviewed 31 teens between the ages of 13 and 18. The team noted that more than 60% of the teens said they often used short video apps. "The main reason is that short video apps are really good at connecting teens with information that they're interested in and that they can share with their friends," one researcher said.
At the same time, some teens were uncomfortable with the addictive (使人成瘾的) nature of the apps. One teenager explained, "I use them for hours without realizing it, because I just keep scrolling."
Some other teens said that the apps' videos of many perfect faces and lives could hurt their self-respect. "I see someone 's really nice house, cute dogs, or happy family. There's just so much information about those things that I often compare them with what I have in my own life. It makes me a little nervous," said another teenager.
So how can teenagers avoid those bad influences? They can control their addictive habits by reducing their screen time. They can choose a certain time as their "social media time". They can also avoid using their phones for a few minutes and try to enjoy the real world by taking a walk, meeting up with friends, and going on a phoneless adventure.
