Issumboshi was a one-inch boy, and he was so small that he could not do any useful work on the family farm. His grandfather became tired of feeding such a useless man and sent him away to the city.
“Learn to become a warrior(武士),”he told his grandson.“Then perhaps you will grow into a man of normal height.”
To help the little man on his way, his grandfather gave him a cup to use as a boat on the river, his mother gave him two long grains of rice to use as oars and his father gave him a pin to use as a sword.
Issumboshi's journey was long and dangerous. However, because he was so brave and clever, he at last reached the city safely.
To his surprise, the streets were empty. The people of the city were hiding in their houses from a powerful giant.
Immediately, brave Issumboshi went out to meet the giant. The giant tried to pick him up and eat him, but Issumboshi was so small and quick that the giant could not get hold of him.
Issumboshi struck again and again at the giant with his sword. Before long, the giant fell to the ground and died from a thousand wounds.
“Oh, what a great warrior he is!”the people of the city shouted as they came out of their houses.“What a great hero this young man is!”Hearing this, Issumboshi felt so proud that he stood up straight. He told himself, “I am already taller than I was. How wise my grandfather was to send me to the city!
Shadow puppet play(皮影戏), also called “shadow play”, is a traditional Chinese art of storytelling. Dramas were played out in screen or walls for thousands of years to entertain(娱乐) and instruct. It was very popular in many parts of China during the Tang (618—907) and Song(960—1279) periods.
Shadow puppets are made of hard leather(皮革). The leather is cut out in the shape of a person, an animal or an object. Each puppet is painted in bright colors and put on a stick. Different colors are used to show good and bad of persons in the drama. Some puppets have movable arms and legs. They're reflected(反射,映出) on the white screen through the light.
During a shadow puppet play, the players stand behind a white screen with lights behind it
The audience sit in front of the screen. The players hold the puppets very close to the screen so the audience can see the puppets' shadows clearly. Then they move the puppets around and do the voices of the different roles.
Now with TV and films, shadow puppet plays are not as popular as before. But the basic principle(愿望) and ways of shadow performance played an important leading role in the invention of the modern movie and the development of the movies and cartoons. Nowadays, the
Chinese shadow puppet plays have been collected by the museums of many countries in the world. It is the treasure in the world culture and art family.
A few months ago, a strange thing happened in my life. I heard a strange sound outside the window every night. I was scared and didn't know what to do. I thought there might be a thief standing outside the window was closed. I asked my parents to see what it was. But they didn't find anything. They thought it might be the wind. But I didn't think so.
That lasted for a few days. I couldn't sleep well. Sometimes I even couldn't fall asleep, One day, I bought a flashlight(手电筒) in a market. At midnight, as soon as I heard the strange sound, I jumped out of my bed with the flashlight. I saw a black cat jumping up and down near thewindow. He might want to make friends with my pet cat, but he couldn't get into my house.
Do you think it is strange? Have you ever had this kind of experience in your life?

A group of classmates got together to visit their old teacher. These classmates all had good jobs and made lots of money. They talked .The teacher asked them the difficulty they had had. Then their talk soon turned to talking about the stress (d压力) in work and life, The teacher went to kitchen and came back with a large pot of coffee and many—China ones, plastic ones and glass ones. Some are plain looking, some are expensive and some are lovely. The teacher told them to help to the coffee.
When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the teacher said,“ Can you notice that all of you took nice-looking expensive cups, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones? You want only thefor yourselves, and it is the source of your problems.”
“What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup you went for the best cups and then began looking at each other's cups.”
“Now about this; life is the coffee, and the jobs, money and position in society the cups. They are just tools to hold, and do not change the life. Sometimes, by caring only about the cups, we to enjoy the coffee. don't let the cups drive you, and enjoy the coffee instead.”
