When you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they will become weak. When you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. Yet many people do not seem to know that memory (记忆)works in the same way.

When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong.

If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is his own fault (过错).But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents may be blamed (责备), and few of us know that it is just his own fault. Have you ever found that some people can't read or write but usually they have, better memories? This is because they cannot read or write but they have to remember things, they cannot write them down in a small notebook. They have to remember days, names, songs and stories, so their memory is being exercised the whole time.

So if you want to have a good memory, learn from the people: practice remembering things in a way as other people do.

A . A good memory comes from less practice. B . Your memory works in the different way as your arms or legs. C . Don't learn how to read or write if you want to have a better memory. D . Your memory, like your arms or legs, becomes weak if you do not give it enough chance to practice.
    4. (4) Few people know that it is only        if a friend has a poor memory.

Most people want to be happy, but few know how to find happiness. Money and success alone do not bring lasting happiness. Happiness depends on ourselves. In other words, we make our own happiness.

Here are a few suggestions to help you be happier.

Too often, we spend so much time thinking about the future--for example, getting into college or getting a good job that we fail to enjoy the present (现在).You should enjoy life's simple pleasures, such as reading a good book, listening to your favorite music, or spending time with close friends. People who have several close friends often live happier and healthier lives.

Another secret of living a happy life is to be active. Having hobbies make you forget your problems and time. Many people experience this by dancing, swimming or playing a sport. You can forget about your problems, and only think about the activity.

Finally, many people find happiness in helping others. Studies show that people feel good when they spend their time helping others. If you want to feel happier, do good things for someone. You can help a friend with his or her studies, go shopping to buy food for an elderly person, or simply help out around the house by washing the dishes.

六、翻译句子(共5小题,计10分)
七、任务型阅读(共5小题,计10分)
  • 28. 阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。

What does it mean to be green? "Green" is more than just a color. It also means taking special steps to protect the environment — the water, the land, and the air we breathe. Why green? Plants are green, and without them the earth wouldn't be such a lovely home for us human beings.

Sometimes people call our society a "throwaway society". That means we are always throwing away old things and buying new ones. Many times, if you no longer need something, someone else just might need it. For example, if your brother is old enough not to play with his plastic bike, why not give it to another family who has a little kid so that they don't need to buy one? And one less large plastic toy doesn't need to be produced.

Recycling (回收利用)has never been easier. Many organizations will pick it up right in front of your house and some towns even require (要求)it. Tell your mom or dad you want to become "Chief of Recycling" for your family. Now that you know what things you can recycle, find a place to keep them. Make sure you encourage everyone in your house to think whether things can be reused or recycled before they're thrown away.

Almost everyone likes traveling. But next time before you travel around the world, take a look at your own backyard. Is there a place where you could plant a tree or put in a little fruit or vegetable garden? If so, get there and get your hands dirty. Then you can watch with pride as your tree takes root, and your garden plants grow into big plants full of ripe, red tomatoes or tiny, juicy blueberries. Who knew being green would taste so good?

    1. (1) How does the writer introduce the topic of the passage at the beginning?
    2. (2) What does a "throwaway society" mean?
    3. (3) To be "Chief of Recycling", what should you do?
    4. (4) Why are you advised to run a fruit or vegetable garden?
    5. (5) The purpose of the passage is to tell us that we should protect our environment. Is it right?
