The race began. All the runners ran very fast, but the boy 3 at the last minute. The crowd cheered and waved at the boy. The wise man said nothing. The little boy felt 4 and important.
"Another race, another race!" cried the little boy. The wise old man came over and presented (交给) the little boy with two new runners, an old woman and a blind man. "This is no race!" the little boy shouted.
"Race!" ordered the wise man. The boy won again. The crowd, 5, was silent this time.
"6 don't the people cheer for my success?" he asked the wise old man.
"Race again!" replied the wise man, "But this time, finish 7." The little boy thought a little, and then took the hands of the blind man and the old woman. The race began and the little boy walked 8 to the finishing line. The crowed 9. The wise man smiled.
"Who is the crowd cheering for?" asked the little boy. The wise old man, putting his hands on the boy's shoulders, replied softly, "Little boy, for this race you have won 10 than in any race you have ever run before, and for this race the crowd cheer not for any winner!"
Mr. Brown was going away for a week. Before he left, he said to his son, "if anyone asks for me, you can tell him that your father has been out for doing something, and will be back in a week, then be sure to ask him to sit down for a cup of tea."
"OK, Dad," said his son. But he was afraid his son couldn't remember this, he wrote these words down on a piece of paper and gave it to him. His son put it into his small pocket, took it out and looked at it every now and then.
Four days passed, but no one came to see his father. The boy thought that there was no man to come and that the piece of paper was of no more use for him, so he burnt it that evening.
The next afternoon, someone knocked at the door. The boy opened it. A man was standing at the door and said, "Where is your father?" The boy put his hand into his pocket at once and looked for the piece of paper. He could not find it. He suddenly remembered he had burnt it, so he shouted, "No more."
The man was very surprised. He asked, "No more? I met your father last week. When did it happen?"
"Burnt yesterday evening."
One of the things to be learnt in a foreign language is guessing all the time what kind of thing to come when listening to someone talking. People do this all the time in their own language, so it is necessary (必要的) to do this in a foreign language, too. Here are some examples.
①"What's the matter?" "I went to a party last night, so I…"
②"I feel so tired these days."" I think you'd better…"
③"Of course, she never stops talking. She is one of the most…"
You can see from the above three examples that the context (上下文) helps a lot in understanding what is being talked about. So "guessing "is very important in understanding English, especially (尤其) spoken English.
Most dictionaries will tell you a number of things about a language. There are three important things. These three things are spelling, pronunciation and meaning.
First, a dictionary will tell you the spelling of a word. If you are not sure about the spelling of a word, you can try to find the correct spelling in a dictionary. Words are listed in an alphabetical order-a, b, c and so on. For example, on a dictionary page the "poor" comes before "poverty" and the word "poverty" comes before the "power". The words are always given in alphabetical order.
The second thing, a dictionary will tell you the pronunciation. Most dictionaries give phonetic (语音的), or sound alphabet. Most dictionaries use the International Phonetic Alphabet shows pronunciation.
The third thing, a dictionary will tell you the meaning of words. You can look up a word and find out what it means. Many words have more than one meaning, and a good dictionary will tell you all of the word's meanings. For example, in English the common word "get" has over 20 different meanings.
You may hear about earthquakes, but do you know what to do before, during and after an earthquake? Here is some advice for you:
Before an earthquake
It is necessary to prepare yourself and your family .all family members should know how to turn off gas, water and electricity and know useful telephone numbers (doctor, hospital, police and 119 etc.) never put heavy things over beds.
During an earthquake
It is important for each of you to stay calm. If you are indoors, quickly move to a safe place in the room such as under a strong desk or table. The purpose is to protect yourself from falling objects. Stay away from windows, large mirrors heavy furniture and so on. If you are cooking, turn off the gas. If you are outdoors, move to an open area like a playground. Move away from buildings, bridges and trees. If you are driving, stop the car as soon as possible, staying away from bridges and tall buildings, stay in your car.
After an earthquake
ONCE the shaking has stopped, DO NOT run out of the building at once. It is better to wait and leave when it is safe. Check around you and help the people who are in trouble. If your building is badly broken, you should leave it. If you smell or hear a gas, get everyone outside and open windows and doors. If you can do it safely, turn off the gas. Report it to the gas company.

Doing homework not only can help children master the knowledge they have learnt but also can train their abilities of finishing the work alone, (plan) the time and doing the (duty). But some children don't like to complete the work .Why? There are some reasons.
Some children feel it is very difficult (do) their homework, because they can't understand their teacher (clear), and can't follow their teacher's teaching process. Maybe there is something wrong with their intelligence.
But some children's intelligence is normal. They are even (clever), but they don't listen to the teacher (careful). It is hard for them (sit) well and pay attention to anything. It needs to carry on the attention centralized (集中注意力) training (help) the children.
Some children love their teacher and then they like the subject. Their interest depends on the teacher who (teach) them. So every teacher should be (help) and kind. It can make children love you and the subject you teach. So they can do their homework happily.
Mike was a good and well-trained boy. His parents loved him very much. He did everything well, but Mike had one bad habit. He ate a lot of sweets and chocolates. Those were his favorite. He just couldn't give up. His mother always told him, "Mike doesn't eat so many sweets. You will get toothaches."
His mother used to keep all the sweets in a glass jar (罐子). One day when his mother went to the market, Mike saw that his father was asleep. So he walked carefully and slowly to the kitchen and got the sweet jar. Finally, he opened it and put his hand in narrow mouth. Mike picked a fist (拳头) full of sweets. But when he tried to pull his hand out, it got stuck (卡) in the jar.
Mike's father was awake and watching. He said to Mike, "You have picked up too many sweets in your fist. It's more than your little hand can keep. Your fist cannot come out of the jar. Let go off the sweets and pick only one sweet in your two fingers and you can pull your hand out easily. Always take as much as you can control."
Mike pulled out his hand from the jar easily and he learned a lesson for his life, too.
