An old man went to India. When he got there, he saw a lot of fruit for sale, but much of it was very 1. Only a big basket of red fruit was cheap.
"How much per kilo?" the old man asked. "Two rupees(卢比,印度货币单位), "the shopkeeper answered. Two rupees in India is almost2, so the old man bought a whole kilogram and started eating it.
However, as soon as he started eating, his3began to burn, his eyes began to water, and his whole face became as4 as the fruit. As he coughed and struggled to breathe(呼吸), he5up and down, screaming(尖叫):"Ah!Ah!Ah!"
And yet he6to eat the fruit!
Some people saw him and said, "Those are chili peppers(红辣椒)!You can't just eat them by the handful!"
The old man said, "I7for them, so I must eat them."
This old man must seem pretty stupid. But are we much smarter?All of us have8money, time and effort(努力)into something maybe a relationship, or a business, or a job-and sometimes, 9we know there's no hope that things will change, we still continue with it. Why?Because we've put in all that money, time and effort.
What we can learn from the old man is this:If you've lost a lot for something that doesn't work, let it go and10. It's better than continuing to lose.
They keep telling me:
Make the correct plan;
Think the correct way;
Ask the right question;
Follow the right way.
Are things as simple as black or white?
Can we really find in life any clear line?
I'm not happy with what they say;
I believe there is another way.
Listen to me!
Listen to me!
Can I have my own voice?
Can't I tell my own stories?
I'll know what I feel. I'll say what I think.
I'll start my own trip.
Then I'll make my own history. by Harley M.
"Oh, my God," said Mrs. Kim. "I don't think we will be able to do our lesson today." Children loved Mrs. Kim's science lessons. Josh asked, "Why not?" "Well," began Mrs. Kim, "I had planned to do some measuring today. But I forgot to bring any ruler. We can't measure anything without a ruler, can we?"
"What are we going to measure?" asked Mathew. "I want you to measure the distance from one side of the classroom to the other side." answered Mrs. Kim. "We could measure it as my dad sometimes does," said C. J. "He sometimes just puts one foot in front of the other. I guess that's how we find out how long something is. "
"Let's see whether that will work,"said Mrs. Kim. "Why don't you see how many feet it takes to cross the room, C. J. ?"C. J. began walking from one side of the classroom to the other side. He put one foot down and then put the heel of the other foot at the toe of his first foot. He continued doing this until he crossed the room. "I counted thirty of my feet from one side to the other side, " C. J. said.
"So you think the room is thirty feet across?"asked Mrs. Jim. "I think someone else should try "said Maddie "just to make sure. ""All right,Maddie "said Mrs. Kim "why don't you try?"
"I've always had a pretty clear idea of what I want to do, "says Mary. You may not be as sure of your career as Mary. But you can start thinking about and planning for your future career. The following helps middle school students plan for careers.
Explore your interests Many middle school students don't know what they want to do. But in fact, students may change their minds several times. And some of tomorrow's careers might not exist(存在)today. Focusing on just one job in middle school isn't necessary. But looking into the kinds of careers you might like can help you succeed. |
Learn about yourself Understanding what you enjoy and what you're good at is the most important step in exploring careers. If you don't know what you want to do,you should ask yourself what you like to learn about. It's important to think about what you like to do because future careers will finally be a big part of your life. |
Discover possible careers Once you've thought about the subjects and activities you like best,the next step is to look for careers that put those interests to use. If you love sports, you might consider a career as a PE teacher or a soccer coach. If you like English, a career as an English teacher, a translator or a tour guide might be a good choice. |
Do your research After discovering possible jobs, you should learn more about them. Talking directly to workers on the phone or by email can help you get information about what they do. Even meeting with them in person is helpful. First-hand information is necessary for you to find out if you'll really like a career. |
Have you ever wanted to have a doll that could talk to you?In the book The Ventriloquist's Daughter, a girl named Liur gets a doll like this. But it is not as fun as she thought.
Lin Man-Chiu, an author from Taiwan, wrote the book. British translator Helen Wang translated it into English. The book tells a touching story about Liur and her father.
Liur loses her mother at a young age. Her grandfather sends her father to study medicine in the US. Five years later, he comes back with a doll named Carola, as he had promised he would. This doll is quite unusual-it can talk!However, Carola makes a lot of problems for the family.
After reading this book, I thought Liur and her father were just unlucky. In fact, this story is based on the author's own unhappy childhood. She had six sisters. Still, her grandfather wanted a grandson. Her father was under heavy pressure(压力)and didn't live with her and her sisters for a very long time. The author didn't like her father when she was young. But now she has forgiven(原谅)him. The talking doll Carola stands for(代表)her father's burden(负担).
After I learned this, I understood the author's main message. Everyone has demons(心魔)in their lives, but we should do our best to defeat(打败)them.
The fruit bat(果蝠), also known as the "flying fox(狐狸)", got its name because it has large eyes and looks like a fox. There are many kinds of fruit bats and they are different in size from one place to the next. For example, some fruit bats are no more than two inches long. Others, though, are more than 16 inches in length.
Flying foxes have pointed teeth. Most people have been taught that the teeth are for a meat-eating animal. However, they only eat flowers and fruit. When feeding on fruit, they drink the juice.
Flying foxes have difficulty getting into the air if they fall on the ground, so they feed on fruit on the trees and will not follow a meal if it drops to the ground. They get their water by flying over rivers and lakes without having to land.
Flying foxes are found in Australia. Living in large groups, they sometimes gather(聚集)by the tens of thousands in rainforests and near rivers. Like most bats, they rest by hanging upside-down, and sleep during the day and feed at night. They may have to travel for long distances during certain(某些的)times of the year in order to find food. They will make the journey back to their home, though, before the Sun comes up. Unlike most bats, this flying animal uses its sight but not echolocation(回声定位)to look for food.
The flying fox plays an important role in pollination(传粉)in Australia, and its droppings help with the spread(传播)of seeds. However, many farmers in Australia prefer to cover their fruits so, that the bats would not destroy(损坏)them.
Two men, Jim and John, were walking their dogs when they(walk) by a restaurant. "Let's go in and get something(eat), "Jim suggested.
"We can't," John responded(回答). "Don't you seesign? It says" 'No pets allowed',(luck), I don't think they will let us enter the restaurant." "Ah yes, that sign," Jim said. "Don't worryit. I have a plan. Just follow me." Jim took out a par of dark(sunglass) and put them on. He then walked up to the door. As tried(go) into the restaurant, a doorman stopped him and said, "I'm sorry sir, we do not allow pets in this restaurant."
"Can't you see" Jim said. "I am not able(see)! These are seeing-eye dogs. I can't go anywhere without(they). Can I go in now?"
