It was nearly dark. The sun was dropping1the mountains far away. Little Tom came back home with his head down, looking really sad.
"What's the matter, Tom?2is your trip?" his mother asked with a big smile. "I failed, Mom.3the mountain was so high and full of big or small stones on the way, I still went ahead. But I felt very tired and it was so late that I had to4." Tom cried loudly. "It doesn't matter. As we know, you are only 14 years old after all. You will have another5." his mother said. "But, standing at the top of the mountain is my dream!" Tom said.
His father came over and asked, "Did you see the green trees on your way to the6?" "Sure. There were a lot of beautiful flowers by the side of the road." Tom7,' and there were many birds singing in the trees, and the sound was8." "Did you feel the beauty of nature, my dear?"" his father asked. "Yes, the blue sky, the white clouds, and the green trees made such a nice9." Tom answered. "Did you notice other people on the way?" his father asked. "Yes. A little girl10her mother happily." Tom answered. "That's11!" his father smiled and said, "Please remember, my boy. It is not the most important thing to achieve what you12. Although you didn't reach the13of the mountain, in fact, you have already got a lot on the way.
It is14that not every goal(目标) will be achieved, not every job will end up with a(n)15success, and not every dream will come true. The most beautiful sight is on the way!

Karen worked in a small company. One day, the manager asked Karen to come into his office. He told Karen that everyone was pleased with her work and then asked Karen to do a special job for him. He said he had to go to an important meeting where he had to give a speech about their company. He asked Karen to write the speech for him. He told her it had to be exactly twenty minutes long and should be interesting. It had to be ready by the next morning.
Karen asked the manager some questions about what should be in the speech, and then she went to other members of the company and talked to them as well. Soon she had enough information to write the speech. She worked on it all night and in the morning she gave it to the manager. The manager thanked her and rushed off to the meeting with the speech.
The next day Karen came to work and found a note from the manager on her desk. "Come to my office immediately," it said. Karen was worried. Was something wrong with the speech?
She went to the manager's office. As soon as she entered the office, she could see that the manager was unhappy. She could see her speech in his hand.
"I thought I asked you to write an interesting speech that would last for twenty minutes", he began. "This speech, he continued, "lasted twice that long! The beginning was interesting, but by the second half, people got up and left. It was so boring! How could you do this to me? This was very important for the company!"
Karen couldn't understand what had gone wrong.
"I'm sure that it was only twenty minutes long," she replied. "I did everything you asked. I'm sure. I even gave you two copies."
①The manager gave the speech at an important meeting.
②Karen wrote the speech for the manager.
③Karen gave two copies of the speech to the manager.
④The manager asked Karen to do a special job.
The world uses about a thousand million(百万) tons of water a day. Water is a human right and everyone should have their share. Yet more than 700 million people around the world have trouble getting clean, safe water.
Treating wastewater is a good way to provide fresh water for us. And it, also helps the environment by keeping waste out of rivers and oceans. 80% of wastewater around the world is not treated at all, and it is running into oceans. But now we have got the technology to treat and reuse the wastewater.
While 75% of our planet is covered with water, only about 2% is fresh water一that comes from rivers, lakes, ice and snow. The rest, 98% of the water, is in seas and oceans. It is too salty to drink. Then desalination (淡化) businesses come in. More than 19,000 factories have been built around the world, mostly in coastal countries. They process (加工) more than 92 million tons of water every day. But the technology they use requires a lot of energy.
Scientists are working to create a less costly technology. They want to produce 20 times more clean water and make sure everyone has enough. But for now, the world still faces each day with not having enough water for everyone.
Imagine this: You are tired after a very long day. You get on a bus and make your way to a seat near the back. Then a white man comes on the bus. The bus driver tells you to give up your seat for the man. If you don't, he'll call the police and have you arrested (逮捕). That's what Rosa Parks suffered in 1955.
Back then, that's how life was for many African Americans in parts of the United States. Rosa Parks helped change that. Parks died in 2005. But the influence of her brave actions can still be seen today.
Taking a Stand
When Parks was a young woman, many states in the South had segregation laws. These laws separated white people and black people. Black people had to go to separate restaurants, schools, and theaters. They had to sit in the back of public buses. They also had to give up their seats to the; white. Living in one of these cities, Montgomery, Rosa Parks thought these laws were unfair so she decided to do something about it. On December 1, 1955, she refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man. The police arrested her.
Leading the Way
Because of the terrible things Parks experienced, black people started to give up city buses in Montgomery. Thousands of black people refused to take the bus. Instead, they walked, carpooled, or took cabs to work for more than a year.
This made the rest of the nation pay attention to the unfair laws. On November 13, 1956, the Supreme Court, the nation's highest court, banned (禁止) segregation on buses.
Parks encouraged others to stand up for their rights too. "I just wanted to be free like everybody else", Parks once said.
Here is an interview with Elvis Presley, the king of Rock and Roll in America.
(Reporter=R; Elvis Presley=E)
R: So Elvis, you were born on 8th January 1935, weren't you? E: Yes, that's right. I was born in a place called Mississippi. R: Mississippi's pretty famous, isn't it? E: Yes. Mostly because people find it difficult to spell! R: So, tell me something about your childhood. Life wasn't easy, was it? E: No, not really. We were a poor family. I was the only kid who went to school with no shoes on. R: But it was your father who bought you your first instrument, wasn't it? E: No, actually it was my mum. She bought me a cheap guitar for my 10th birthday. I'll never forget that. I'll never forget my mother. R: You've always liked listening to rock and roll, haven't you? E: Yes. I grew up loving music. I loved any type of music, and Rock and Roll was always my favorite. R: When did you have your first record? E: I made it in 1954. R: People say your music has changed as you've grown older. E: I don't know. People say all kinds of things about me. They say I've put on weight too. R: You'll always be the greatest musical artist of the 20th century, no matter how much you weigh! |

What is it that makes us different from machines? We have created AI(人工智能) programs that can do many of the same things we can. There are software (软件) programs that can play (象棋), drive cars and solve difficult math problems.
But what about creative works? Most art, music and poetry are inspired by emotion (情感). And yet, we have indeed created AI that can produce creative works.
In (十月), 2018, Christie's famous auction (拍卖) house auctioned off a painting named Portrait of Edmond de Bellamy. The painting is not very outstanding. But it was sold for $432, 500, about 3 (百万) yuan. What made it so special? The fact is that it was (画) by an AI program written by Obvious, a group of (艺术家) in Paris, according to Artnet News.
AI has entered the world of poetry as well. In April, 2018, Chinese and Japanese researchers wrote (一套) AI program that uses images to write poems. The AI looks at colors and shapes in an image and uses this information to write a poem (快地). Five hundred human judges (评委) were asked whether they could tell if the poems were written by a human or a computer. Forty percent of the judges mistakenly thought the poems were written by a human, according to MIT Technology Review.
But if AI can learn to create works of art (像) these, what place do humans have in the creative world? The difference is that true art is almost always an expression of emotion — something that AI is still (不能的) to feel. As the famous poet Amy Lowell once said, "Art is the desire of a man to express (他自己), to record the reactions of his personality to the world he lives in"
Mr. Clark was born in small town in England. When he finished middle school, he found a job in a police station. He has worked there many years and he would retire (退休) this autumn. He tried to work hard all the time, he wasn't a lucky man and never caught a thief. He was often sorry for it.
Last weekend, Mrs. Clark was cooking supper, she found there (be) no sugar. So she asked her husband (buy) some in the shop near their house. Mr. Clark went into the shop and found a young man stealing some money from a (woman) bag. He ran to the thief (quick), but the young man saw him and ran away at once. took Mr. Clark half an hour to run after him. At last he caught the thief. brave Mr. Clark was!
"Please give me a chance, sir, said the young man. "I've never stolen anything before."
"Who can give me a chance?" said Mr. Clark. "I'll soon retire and I have never caught a thief before."
