Being concerned (关心) about what other people think about us is very common. However, we shouldn't spend so much time caring about others' opinions. Indeed (其实), if we spent all day worrying about how our actions make us appear, we'd never get anything1. So, how do we learn to ignore (忽视) others' opinions? Well, the answer is about learning to value2we are.
It means that we should live our lives for ourselves, not for other people. This is3said than done, and here are4ways to go about doing this.
First, we should remember that our biggest judges (评判员) are ourselves. If we have a low opinion of ourselves, then we think that others feel the same way about us. For example, you can make a list of the things you're good at and practice5every day. You can also spend more time6people who you love, and distance yourself from those. These things can help you feel better about yourself.
Second, we can't7the way other people react to (对……有反应) us, no matter how hard we try. By realizing this, you can learn to focus more on things8you unique (独特的). At the same time, however, we shouldn't completely forget about how we act around other people. After all, 9likes to have someone jump ahead of them in a queue (长队), for example. So, the best thing to remember is10nice to others.
That way, you don't have to worry about being judged at all-except for being nice.
Taking online classes is becoming more and more popular, but students have different opinions about it. Wang Qi, 14: I love taking online courses. They give me a lot more choices and freedom (自由). We can choose to learn whatever we want. Also, online classes make it possible for us to study whenever and wherever we want, which is very convenient. Wu Jun, 13: I don't think taking online classes is a good way to study. There are many temptations (诱惑) on the Internet. Students can be distracted (使分心) from their courses easily. The whole learning process is not as organized as it is in the classroom. Zhou Siya, 13: Online classrooms are beneficial (有益的). We might put more attention to learning when we are alone in front of a computer with no one to distract us. What's more, taking courses online also means we can have more time to use a computer, which is a good way to practice our computer skills. Liu Chunjie, 14: I think the idea of taking online courses is crazy. It can increase our exposure (接触) to computers and the radiation (辐射) from them could do harm to the human body, especially our eyes. Also, sitting in front of a computer for a long time without exercising can be harmful to our health. |
Sixteen years ago, I learned an important life lesson in the back of a New York City taxi.
One day, I called a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right lane (车道) when suddenly a black car jumped out of parking space right in front of us. My driver quickly stopped his car and missed the other car by just inches (几英寸)! The driver of the other car turned his head around and started shouting at us! My driver just smiled and waved at the guy. I mean, in a really friendly way. So I asked, "Why did you just do that? This guy almost hit your car and sent us to the hospital!"
He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage-all kinds of bad feelings. As their garbage adds up, they need a place to dump (倾倒) it and sometimes they'll dump it on you. Don't take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the street.
Since then I have started to see garbage trucks everywhere. I see the load (负载) they're carrying…I see them coming to dump it. And like my taxi driver, I don't make it a personal thing;I just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on.
Whether it's soccer, basketball or tennis there are lots of fun sports to play when you're not busy with school. Some sports, like basketball, are universal. Kids all over the world play them. But other sports are most unique (独有的).
In the US, playing baseball is a common after-school activity for many kids. In fact, it is known as the "nation pastime" of the US. But few people outside of the US play this sport. It is popular in some Central American countries, such as Mexico, and some East Asian countries, such as Japan and South Korea. But it is almost unknown in other parts of the world.
There is also American football, a sport that is unique to the US and Canada. The sport is similar to rugby (英式橄榄球), which is more popular in Europe. Players have to carry, throw or kick the ball to a receiving player in the "end zone" in order to score points. But they have to get the ball past n wall of defending (防守的) players first.
US students who play these sports usually take them quite seriously. Some high school players can go on to play on college teams, receiving scholarships (奖学金) in return for their performance on the field. Talented college players can be picked by national teams and become professional players. So for some young players, playing sports after school can lead to a full-time career.
Do you have the problem of "in one ear and out the other"? Can't you hold anything in your memory? Here are some tips on how to deal with the problem.
Take exercise. When you exercise, your body takes in more oxygen (氧气). Oxygen makes your brain active.
Tell yourself that you want to learn what you need to remember. If you keep thinking about how bad your memory is, your brain will not be active. Think positive!
Try to be more relaxed. If you want your memory to improve, try to be more cheerful.
Good sleeping habits are important. If you don't have enough sleep, you will be tired and won't be able to concentrate during the day.
Try In take more vitamins, like B vitamins, especially B6, B12, and folic acid (叶酸). They protect neurons (神经细胞) and make red blood cells with oxygen. These are in spinach (菠菜) and other dark leafy greens, strawberries, melons, black beans and soybeans.

She used to sleep on the sidewalk of the post office. I could smell her beforeclose. She wore dirty clothes and her mouth was nearly toothless. I seldom saw her talk with others. If she was not asleep, she talked to. What a poor old lady! She must be upset and hungry.
One Thanksgiving, we had lots of foodover. The old lady came into my mind. She might be still hungry. So I packed the food up and drove over to theStreet. I knew she would stay at the same place and I would find her. "I've brought you some food." However, the old woman didn't seem to be very excited about this. "Oh, thank you very much, but someone has given me foodand I'm quite full now. Why don't you take it to someone else who needs it?
Her words were clear and herwere gracious (亲切的). Soon her head sank into her arms again. I was the only person who didn't know what to say. An old lady who was clearly down on her luck stillothers. Why don't more of us do that?
In Asian countries like China and Japan, wearing masks is common. In 1910, Chinese doctor Wu Liande invented the modern medical mask during the pneumonie plague (肺鼠疫). Since then, masks have become a symbol of China's position as a modern, scientific nation. During the 2003
SARS epidemic, people in China and East Asia also used masks to protect themselves.
In Japan, wearing masks shows your politeness when you get a cold or flu. Some Japanese also turn masks into fashion accessories (时尚配饰). They have different colors and patterns to choose to match their clothes. Some young women wear masks when they don't have their makeup (化妆) on Many pop stars in Asia also use masks lo protect their privacy (隐私). This culture and historical background has made it easier for people in the East to wear masks when epidemics break out.

Do you know when and where the first pizza delivery (传送) took place in history? In Italy nearly
150 years ago.
In 1878. Queen Margherita became the first queen of Italy. As the story goes, the queen grew tired of eating "fancy" meals and wanted to eat "common" food. Raffaele Esposito, the most famous pizza chef (主厨) at that time, was asked to deliver a pizza to the queen.
He prepared a pizza with tomatoes, cheese and basil—the red tomatoes, white cheese and green basil (罗勒) which were the symbol of the colors of Italy's new national flag. As soon as the pizza was out of the oven, he quickly delivered it to the queen himself.
The queen had never eaten pizza before and said it was one of the best things she'd ever eaten. Esposito named the pizza after the queen, and it has been served in nearly every pizza restaurant in the world ever since.
Today. pizza remains one of the world's most popular fast fools. In 1973, US pizza company Domino's Pizza promised to deliver its pizza in "half an hour or less"—if the pizza was late, it would be free. Little Caesars, another US pizza company, offers a "Hot-N-Ready" pizza at nearly all of its stores. These pizzas are cooked around the clock so that there are always fresh pizzas available. You go to the store, pay $ 6 (about 42 yuan) and walk out with a fresh pizza with no waiting time. Pizza, it seems, might be the ultimate (终极)"fast" food.
