John, 11 years old, was in bed in hospital. Several days before, while he was1to catch a ball in a baseball game, he fell and hit his head. According to the doctor, there was2any chances for him to get well.
"He seems to have given up hope. So medicines alone won't3. Perhaps he needs something else," said a doctor. "When I visit him, all he ever says is that he would like to meet Babe Ruth."
To meet Babe Ruth, of course, was not4. In America, Babe Ruth was the most famous baseball player and he was as5as the President.
Thinking it might be impossible, John's father tried it anyway. He took the6to make a phone call to tell Babe Ruth about the story of his son. Twenty-four hours later, when the boy lay in his hospital room, Babe Ruth walked in. Young John could hardly7his own eyes!
The great baseball player sat down at John's bedside, and said, "Kid, I've brought you a new American League baseball. You've got to get well,8you won't be able to throw it."
For John this was the9of a new life. To his doctors' surprise, the boy walked out of the hospital on his own a few weeks later. He was able to live a normal life-all because of the10of Babe Ruth.
People are so busy these days that many people have no time to cook. This becomes a problem, because most families love home cooking! The food tastes good and warm, and a family meal brings everyone together. In some families, meals are often the only times everyone sees one another at the same time.
Another reason people enjoy home cooking is that it is often a way of showing love. A parent who makes some cookies is not just satisfying a child's sweet tooth. She or he is sending a message. The message says, "I care about you enough to spend an hour making cookies that you will eat up in 15 minutes if I let you."
There is also something about the smell of home cooking. The smell of home cooking pleases people of all ages. It makes most of us feel good and loved—even if we are the ones doing the cooking! Next time you smell a cake making, stop for a moment and pay attention to your mood (心情).
Foods that are well known to you may not be familiar to people from different places around the world. Tourists and travelers often get to try some unfamiliar food. That is part of the fun of traveling. Here are four people's experiences with foreign food.
David King is a Chinese student in Italy. "I never had cheese or even milk before came to Italy. Cows are seldom seen in my part of China. So there is no milk or milk products. I drank some milk when I first arrived in Italy. I hated it! I tried cheese, too, but didn't like it. I love ice cream, though that's made from milk." |
Birgit is from Sweden. She traveled to Australia on vacation. "I was in a restaurant that was special in fish. I heard some other people order flake, so I ordered some, too. It was delicious! Later, I learned that flake is an Australian name for shark. Now, whenever I see a new food, I try it on purpose. You know why? I remember how much I enjoyed flake." |
Chandra is a dentist in Texas. She is from India. "I'm afraid to try new foods because maybe there is beef in them. I'm a Hindu (印度教信徒) and my religion (信仰) stops me from eating meat from the cow. That's why I can't eat hamburgers or noodles with meatballs." |
Nathan is from the United States. He taught for a year in China. "My friend gave me some 100-year-old eggs to eat. I didn't like their appearance at all. The eggs were green inside, but my friends said the colour was normal. Chinese people put something on fresh eggs. Then they put them in the earth for three months. So the eggs weren't really very old Even so, I didn't want to touch them." |
The day before yesterday, when Peter's family were having dinner, Father raised an interesting question, "Was there anything in our past that we feel sorry for, guilty (内疚的) about, or regretted? Maybe we can find ways to say sorry, or take some action to correct any wrongdoing." This seemed like a very private matter, but Peter thought about it carefully the whole night.
Peter remembered something from middle school. In his school, there was a worker, Neil Stone, who none of the kids liked. One night, Peter and two of his classmates decided to play a trick on him. They found a can of red paint, and wrote on the school main road in bright red: Neil Stone is a fool! The next day, the whole school saw these words. Within two hours, Neil had Peter and his two classmates in his office. His classmates said that they had done it but Peter lied, denying the truth. No one ever talked about it.
This morning, Peter went back to his middle school. Neil Stone is still working there. "Sorry, Neil. Do you still remember what happened ten years ago? I want you to know that I did it." "I knew it!' Neil laughed. They had a good laugh and a lively discussion. Neil's closing words were: "Peter, I always felt bad for you because your classmates got it off their mind, and I knew you were carrying it around all these years. I want to thank you for visiting me…for your sake."
Peter knows that no matter how difficult the situation is, it is never too late to clear up the past and make a fresh start.
Almost two-thirds of children want their parents to spend more time reading to them before bed. Most of these kids like Mum's storytelling more than Dad's. Researchers said they carried out a study that showed younger children aged 3-4 were most hungry for more stories. Over three-quarters of them said they wished their parents to read to them more often. More than half of all children aged 3-8 said story time was their favorite pastime with their parents.
"The results of our research show the traditional activity of storytelling continues to be a powerful learning and emotional resource (资源) in children's lives," said child psychologist Richard Woolfson.
Storytelling ranked before television or video games among pastimes for kids. 82 percent of them said reading a story with their parents helped them sleep better. This finding came from a survey of 500 children aged 3-4 in Britain. According to the research, there are two ways for mothers to become best storytellers. They can use funny voices to show different characters in a story. They can also make their own special sounds to keep the story interesting and attractive. When mum and dad are not at hand, celebrities will do: over 30 percent of children said they would like to hear a bedtime story from famous people like Harry Potter, star Daniel Radcliffe. Other movie stars like Zac Efron, Miley Cyrus and Emma Watson also welcomed by children.
"It can be very difficult for parents to find the time to read with their children. But these moments can help build close relationship between parents and children, and also can play an important part in their child's development," said Woolfson.
Helen: David, you look tired. What's the matter?
David: I stayed up late last night.
Helen: What? Why did you go to bed so late?
David:
Helen: Why didn't you stay in bed a little longer this morning?
David:
Helen: But I've read a report. It says that if you don't get enough sleep after you study, you may forget 30% of what you've learned.
David: Forget 30%?
Helen: Yes. I've also read that eating right can help you study.
David: Really? I've never heard of that.
Helen: Don't you think so? I think the best food are fish, eggs, milk and soon.
David: I see. Thanks for telling me.
A. And some foods can help you stay well. B. That sounds terrible. C. I only slept for about five hours. D. An old friend came over and we had a talk until late last night. E. I had to study for my English test. |

Whitney didn't have many friends. She was shy and quiet. She never wanted to be popular, but she did want to have someone tosecrets and laugh with.
Then it was timeher to go to college in another town. And she had to live with someone she didn't know. She had no idea whether she could make friends in that new.
But somethingduring the first class. And it changed Whitney's life. The teacher asked everyone to share a little about themselves. Whitney told everyone where she came fromsome simple information. The last question for each student was—"What is your goal for this term?" Most of the students said it was to get good grades, pass theor something similar. But Whitney said something. She said that her goal was to make just one good friend.
When most of the students sat, one student came to Whitney. She reached out her hand and introduced herself. She askedshe could be Whitney's friend. Whitney was surprised and happy. Sheand reached her hand out, too.
Their friendship lasted all through the college.
