Being a teenager can be hard, for you have to face a lot of difficult problems, but a new program called Nfusion is working hard to help teens with mental(精神的) health needs. Nfusion gives teenagers classes where they study or discuss some troubling subjects. Drugs and bullying(欺凌) are just a few of the topics discussed during the class on Saturday.
"I had a bad attitude," said 17-year-old Titeana Davis. Davis went through the Nfusion Program last year. The teen, who once had trouble with her attitude towards others, says the program has changed her life. "They taught me a bad attitude is not going to get you anywhere," said Davis.
Nfusion is a new program that meets teens mental health needs and provides help for their families. The program is designed to help teens aged 14-21 live through a difficult period.
"They're still growing, still developing and still there are a lot of things they don't know how to address. So this is a good program for them to be a part of," said Lakicha Jemigan, who worked for the Nfusion Program.
Teens like Davis are just a few who have come through the program successfully. Now thanks to Nfusion, Davis says she's looking forward to a bright future. "After I graduate from college, I want to work at a primary school and I want to be a second grade teacher," added Davis.
March 24th Saturday We have arrived in the hot, wet city of Bangkok(曼谷). This is our first trip to Thailand(泰国). All the different smells make us want to try the food. We are going to eat something special for dinner tonight. The hotel we are staying in is cheap, and very clean. We plan to stay here for a few days, visit some places in the city, and then travel to Chiang Mai in the North. |
March 27th Tuesday Bangkok is wonderful and surprising. The places are interesting. We visited the famous market which was on water, and saw a lot of fruits and vegetables. Everything is so colorful, and we have taken hundreds of photos already! Later today we will leave for Chiang Mai. We will take the train north, stay in Chiang Mai for two days, and then catch a bus to Chiang Rai. |
March 30th Friday Our trip to Chiang Rai was long and boring. We visited a small village in the mountains. The village people here love the quiet life-no computers or phones. They are the kindest people I have ever met. They always smile and say “hello”. Kathy and I can only speak a few words of Thai, so smiling is the best way to show our kindness. I feel good here and hope to be able to come back next year. |
How can parents really get their children to do housework? It is difficult for parents of nearly every family to teach their children to be ready to do housework, but with one of the following suggestions, you really can get your children to help at home.
If parents give their children the impression that they can never do anything quite right, then they will regard themselves as unfit or unable persons. Unless children believe they can succeed, they will never become totally independent.
My daughter Carla's fifth-grade teacher made every child in her class feel special. When students received less than a perfect test score, she would point out what they had mastered and declared firmly they could learn what they had missed.
You can use the same technique when you evaluate(评价) your child's work at home. Don't always scold and give lots of praise instead. Talk about what he/she has done right, not about what he/she hasn't done. If your child completes a difficult task, promise him/her a Sunday trip or a ball game with Dad.
Learning is a process(过程) of trying and failing and trying and succeeding. If you teach your children not to fear a mistake or failure, they will learn faster and achieve success at last.
Taking pressure off sports competitions
Sports are a great way to have fun and stay active. Competitions can make sports more exciting. But because somebody wins and somebody loses competitions can also make kids be under pressure. But too much pressure is bad news. Read on to learn more about sports pressure.
What is a competition?
There are different kinds of competition in sports. For example, a swimmer might compete individually, but the person's score may also contribute to a team's score. What all sports competitions have in common is that all of the competitors want to win.
Why do I feel under pressure?
Do you ever have "butterflies" in your stomach? It's that nervous feeling some people get when starting to attend a new school or preparing for a big soccer match. Believe it or not, the best player on your team gets nervous before a big game. Feeling a little excited or nervous is OK, though. This helps your body and mind get ready to compete. But if you're getting so nervous that you aren't having much fun, it's time to figure out why.
How can I deal with pressure?
When you're competing in sports, you need a lot of energy. Be sure to go to bed on time. And don't forget to eat well on game day. Try to attend all of your team's practices. By practicing, you'll improve your playing skills. The more prepared you are, the better you'll feel and the more fun you'll have.
A. A little pressure can be OK.
B. What if you want to give up?
C. But usually only one person or team does.
D. It takes a lot of work to become skilled at a sport.
E. Even professional players feel nervous sometimes!
F. One secret to having lots of energy is to get plenty of sleep.
G. You may compete by yourself, as part of a team, or both.
The person who has had the most important influence on me is my mother. Since I was a baby, she's always taught me how to live 1. Mom has never been overly strict, 2 she has never let me get away with 3 or stealing. Because of this, I do my best to always be honest and 4 any rules given to me. This has given me a 5 reputation(名声) with my teachers and friends.
My mother always 6 behind whatever I want to do, especially when it comes to my music. I've been 7 since I was five, and she's been to every concert and 8. She loves to hear me sing, and never fails to help me when I need it. The 9 has influenced me in a very strong way. I don't get 10 on stage, and I have a great amount of confidence with her encouragement.
To Mom, 11 is rather important. Ever since kindergarten(幼儿园), she has made sure my grades are good. 12, I've always been one of the best students, so she didn't have much to 13. Without her high expectations of my success, my 14 might not be as good as they are. I don't want to 15 her, so I always do my best. Doing my best has made me a 16 student.
In today's society, some people are 17, selfish, and often untrustworthy(不可靠的). But my mom would never allow me to have these 18. Instead, she made sure I had 19, and that I was polite and friendly to everyone I 20.
Have you ever asked yourself why people often have trouble (learn) English? I hadn't, until one day my five-year-old son asked me there was ham in a hamburger. There isn't. This made me realize that there's no egg in eggplant either. Neither is there pine apple in pineapple. This got me thinking how English can be a crazy language to learn.
For example, we can get seasick at sea, airsick in the air and carsick in a car, but we don't get homesick when we get back home. And (speak) of home, why aren't homework and housework same thing?
Even the smallest words can be (confuse). When you see "WHO" in a medical report do you read it as the "who" in "Who's that?" You also have to wonder at the unique (mad) of a language in which a house can burn up as it burns down.
English (invent) by people, not computers, and it reflects the (create) of the human race. That is why when the stars are out, they are visible, when the lights are out, they are invisible.
"Tom! Here!" said a father to his boy. The boy was at play. He looked toward his father, but did not want to leave his friends. With an unhappy face, the boy got close to his parent.
"Why do you walk so slowly?" said the father angrily. "Come quickly! Take this note to Mr. Smith. Now run as fast as you can."
The boy took the note but he moved away slowly.
"You, Tom! Run!" called the father. "If you are not back in half an hour, I will punish you."
But the words had little effect. The boy's feelings were hurt by the unkindness of the parent.
"I never saw such a boy," said the father, speaking to a friend. "My words make no difference to him."
"Kind words often prove most powerful," said the friend. "Kind words are like the gentle rain. They develop and strengthen good feelings. Try a few kind words."
An hour passed, but his boy wasn't back. The father felt very angry with the child.
