The Mirador Building
The Mirador Building in Madrid(Spain)was created by Dutch studio MVRDV and the Spanish architect(建筑师)Blanca Lleó.The building, which is a block of flats, opened in 2005. There is a large rectangular(矩形的)hole in the upper part of it, which is used by the neighbourhood as a meeting area and playground.
The Prague TV Tower
The Prague TV Tower is in Prague(the capital of the Czech Republic). It stands 216 metres high and looks a bit like a tall, thin space ship. Prague is famous for its architectural beauty, so when the tower was put up in 1985 by architect Vaclav Aulicky and engineer Jiri Kozak, many felt it didn't fit in.
The Longaberger Basket Company
The Longaberger Basket Company building is in Newark, Ohio(USA). The office block was opened in 1997 and looks like a very large basket. It's got seven floors and two handles(把手)at the top. The handles weigh about 150 tons. It may not be the ugliest building in the world but it's certainly one of the most unusual.
An eight-year-old child heard her parents talking about her little brother. All she knew was that he was very sick and they had no money. Only a very expensive operation could save him now and there was no one to lend them the money. When she heard her daddy say to her tearful mother, "Only a miracle(奇迹)can save him now, " the little girl went to her bedroom and pulled her money from its hiding place and counted it carefully.
She hurried to a drugstore with the money in her hand.
"And what do you want?" asked the salesman. "It's for my little brother," the girl answered. "He's really, really sick and I want to buy a miracle." "Pardon?" said the salesman.
"My brother Andrew has something bad growing inside his head and my daddy says only a miracle can save him. So how much does a miracle cost?” "We don't sell a miracle here, child. I'm sorry," the salesman said with a smile.
"Listen, if it isn't enough, I can try and get some more. Just tell me how much it costs."
A well-dressed man heard it and asked, "What kind of a miracle does your brother need?"
"I don't know," she answered with her eyes full of tears. "He's really sick and mum says he needs an operation. But my daddy can't pay for it, so I have brought all my money."
“How much do you have?" asked the man. "$ 1.11, but I can try and get some more," she answered.
"Well, what luck? smiled the man." $ 1.11, the price of a miracle for your little brother."
He took up the girl's hand and said, "Take me to where you live. I want to see your brother and meet your parents. Let's see if I have the kind of miracle you need."
That well-dressed man was Dr. Carlton Armstrong, a famous doctor. The operation was successful and it wasn't long before Andrew was home again.
How much did the miracle cost?
One day when a famous artist was on his way home, a young man stopped him and required to have a word with him. The artist accepted his request.
The young man asked, "How can you produce so many beautiful paintings and achieve your fame?"
The artist said, "It seems that you have been thinking of becoming famous every day."
The young man nodded, "Yes. I have been dreaming of being a person as notable (著名的) as you. Every minute I am thinking of how to become reputable (著名的) .I don't know when I can achieve my fame.
The artist told him, "Don't worry, young man, if you want to be a famous man this way, you will have to wait until you die!"
"Why should I?" the young man was puzzled.
The artist said, "What your dream is actually a high building. You never think of how to build it with bricks. Thus the building will never come into reality. However, your story can serve as a mirror. People will remember you because of your idleness (闲散,无聊) and laziness. They will often speak of your name while they give warnings to their children. Aren't you a notorious (声名狼藉) person by then?"
How do you deal with hunger of your stomach? Eat your favorite meal and keep quiet after that? But it never lets you know, because you keep it busy thinking about your friends or favorite stars. So it silently serves your needs and never lets itself grow. When mind loses its freedom to grow, creativity sets a full stop. This might be the reason why we all sometimes think "What happens next?" "Why can't I think?"
Why reading but not watching TV? It is because reading has been the most educative tool used by us right from childhood. Since it develops other aspects of our life, we have to get help from reading.
Once you read a book, you run your eyes through the lines and your mind tries to explain something to you. Now this seed is unknowingly used by you to develop new ideas. If it is used many times, the same seed can give you great help to relate a lot of things, which you would have never thought of in your wildest dreams!
This is nothing but creativity. Within no time you can start talking with your friends in English or any other language and never run out of the right words.
So guys, do give food to your thoughts by reading, reading and more reading. Go and grab a book!
A. Hunger of the mind can be actually solved through wide reading.
B. Also this makes a great contribution to your vocabulary.
C. Reading can help you make more friends as well.
D. Now what are you waiting for?
E. Just like your stomach, your mind is also hungry.
