The Double Seventh Festival, also known as the Qixi Festival, is a traditional Chinese festival. Here is a beautiful story1it.
Long, long ago, there was a young man named Niulang. One day, he2a beautiful girl— zhinǚ, the Goddess's seventh daughter. She had just run away from the boring heaven (天堂)to look for fun on Earth. Zhinǚ soon3 Niulang, and they got married without telling the Goddess. They lived a happy life on Earth and gave birth to two children. Unluckily, the Goddess soon found out the fact and 4 Zhinǚ to return to heaven. With the help of his magic cow. Niulang flew to heaven with his children to look for his wife. The Goddess discovered this and was very5. Taking out her hairpin(发簪), the Goddess created a wide river in the sky to separate (分开)the two 6. From then on, Niulang and Zhinǚ had to live7on the two sides of the river. However, their true love touched all the magpies (喜鹊) in the world, 8 once a year tens of thousands of magpies would fly up to heaven to make a bridge ("the bridge of magpies") for the couple to meet each other. At last, the Goddess allowed 9 to meet each year on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month. That's 10the Double Seventh Festival started. Today, it is a great day for Chinese young people to express their love.

Nowadays the modern world is developing faster and faster in many ways, especially in medicine. A more traditional treatment is once again becoming popular— animal friendship.
It is well-known that people with problems such as heart disease or cancer live longer and get better more quickly if they have pets. Keeping pets lowers blood pressure and makes people less worried. Animals are increasingly important in treating older people who have memory loss and other brain problems. These people often feel nervous and upset. Activities with animals help them improve their physical condition and also give them Joy, entertainment and loving friendship.
Here is an example that shows the benefits of animals. John was a six-year-old mute, He had no physical problems. He just refused to talk. His older cousin, Ned, had a parrot called Sally, and John used to visit it. When he arrived, Ned used to say, "Hi, John!" We all know parrots copy what they hear. After a few visits, Sally began saying "Hi, John!" when John came into the room. Then, one day, Mon turned to the parrot and replied "Hi, Sally!" Staying with the parrot encouraged John to begin talking.
Another use of animal helpers is in schools. In some cases, animals are used to help children with physical or personal problems. In other cases, they are used to teach children to get on and share with others, and even to teach them about animals. Sometimes these animals can play games with children and they have a lot of fun together. Sooner or later, they may become good friends.
If you want to know more about animal helper programs, you can get in touch with organizations like Riding for the Disable or do a search under "animal therapy" on the Internet.
You don't have to be an animal trainer or a doctor to join in the programs.
people need it to keep the electric things going on. It could be used in cameras, calculators, MP3 players and so on.
Ancient Chinese people invented it to calculate numbers. Even in the modern world, people in China still use it and find it faster than calculator.
It's one of the most important inventions in the world. People use it in the office every day. It's used for making books, magazines, newspapers and so on. We shouldn't waste it because it's made from trees.
Though it was invented in the western country, it was very popular in the 1970s in China. It's good for environment and for riders' health if you travel by it.
People keep this invention at home because it's very useful for daily life. It can keep the food cool and fresh so that people don't need to go food shopping often. |
A. Abacus— 190 AD Use of the abacus, with its beads in a rack, was first recorded in China in about 190 AD. The Chinese version was the speediest way to do sums for centuries and, in the right hands, can still outpace electronic calculators. B. Battery— 1800 AD In 1780s, Italian physicist Luigi Galvani discovered that a dead frog's leg would twitch when he touched it with two pieces of metal. His friend, professor Alessandro Volta made the first battery which could be used in electronic machines. C. Bicycle— 1861 AD First showed as a gentleman's plaything in the1820s, the push-powered hobby-horsed(竹马)quickly became the most classless form of transport which is good for the environment too. D. Camera— 1826 AD Though British polymath William Talbot was the inventor of one of the earliest cameras, Joseph Nicephore Niepce produced the earliest surviving photograph on a pewter plate(锡板)in 1826. E. Refrigerator— 1834 AD Jacob Perkins was the first to describe how pipes filled with volatile(易挥发的)chemicals whose molecules(分子) evaporated(蒸发) very easily could keep food cool. F. Locks— 2000 BC Egyptians were the first to put things under lock and key about 4,000 years ago. G. Paper— 105 AD The Chinese began using bamboo fibers to make paper almost 2,000 years ago, but it took centuries for paper to envelop the world. People can't live without it now. |

I was cycling along a street on my way to the interview. yellow car passed me and suddenly turned right in front of me. I had to brake(刹车)hard and I hit another cyclist. We both fell, but luckily of us was hurt. The light turned red and the car stopped. I was angry that I went up to tell the car driver what a bad driver he was. I told him that he had nearly caused a bad accident and that he was a danger to other people on the road. I went on shouting at him when everyone was at him. His face red. Finally I said to him, "Don't be so stupid in future. Drive carefully so that everyone can enjoy a long life." Then I picked up my bicycle and left.
Luckily, I was on time for the interview. But to my , the person who interviewed me was the driver of the yellow car — was the manager of the company!
I decided to look on the whole matter as a great joke. I laughed and said, "Yes, we've already met, haven't we? I remember that the last time we met I did the most of the talking, so perhaps I should you do the talking this time."
But can you believe that the interview went very well? The "driver" was satisfied with my work experience and my answers to his questions. Clearly, he was not angry me.
Two days later, I received a letter offering me the job.
Henry Ford was the eldest son of a farmer, William. He grew up on a farm in Michigan, a state of America. Like most farmers at that time, his father William hoped his eldest son would help him on the farm. However, Henry was not interested in farm work at all. He did everything that he could to avoid it. Once he wrote, "What a waste it is for a man to spend hours behind a slowly moving horse!"
However, Henry was not a lazy boy. He liked to do mechanical(机械的)work very much. When he was twelve, he became quite interested in clocks and watches. He mended clocks and watches for his friends in his bedroom. He loved this and learned much from it.
Later he took a job as a mechanic(技工)in Detroit, USA. He began to show great interest in steam engines(蒸汽发动机) at this time. Then he built his first car. In 1908, he built a famous "Model T". This car was so popular at that time that it was unchanged for twenty years. Five years after that, he started the Ford Motor Company which is one of the most famous companies in the world. We can see many kinds of cars produced in the company everywhere.
