Right now, I'm on the bus, traveling on the roads of southwest England. Sometimes, I see a bird.
Yesterday, I held a worm(幼虫) between my fingers for the first time in years, watching its soft pink body moving around.
For these moments, I am thankful forFingers in the Sparkle Jar. The book is a growing-up memoir (回忆录) by BBC presenter Chris Packham.
As a quiet young boy, Packham only felt happy in the fields and woods around his home. But after he took a young kestrel (茶隼) from its nest, he started a friendship that would teach him what it meant to love and change him forever.
In his rich, beautiful and emotional description, Packham brings to life his childhood, from his bedroom with fox skulls (头骨), birds' eggs and sweaty jam jars, to his wild adventures (探险). His story is about the search for freedom, meaning and acceptance in a world that didn't understand him.
But just as Packham is having fun in forests and streams, he also struggles with Asperger's Syndrome (亚斯伯格综合征).He doesn't like communicating with others. He speaks of a painful loneliness, hypocritical (伪善的) parents and difficulties that cut all ties with his dream world.
In fact, this book helped me get to know my own unusual character, where it might come from, and realize how it affects others. The book showed me that sometimes, the only thing to do is to run off into the woods and be alone. I was silent for a long time, holding that letter. I thought about how much I loved and missed my mother.
Eating out is more popular in Britain today than it has ever been. It is reported that British people spend more eating out than cooking for themselves and eating at home. It seems that many British people are becoming more and more interested in how good their food tastes, and also how healthy it is.
However, eating out can also be expensive, so British people do not eat out every night. When having a date with friends, or having a birthday, many people like to go to a restaurant, and people often also eat in a restaurant before going to the cinema or the theater.
As in all cultures, there are many rules of manners about eating. The knife and fork should be used in the correct way. It is also impolite to speak with your mouth full then you are eating.
Most British cities have a large collection of food as well as British food, from the very cheap to the very expensive—French, Italian, Indian, Chinese, Thai, Japanese and many, many more.
When people are too tired to cook after work, they often get a "takeaway". This means that they order from a take-out restaurant by telephone, and then go to get it. Many take-out restaurants also send it to your house. All you have to do is to open the door, pay and eat!
If we think of Earth's resources (资源) as a bank account, then we have already used up all the "money" that Earth saved for this year.
As of July 29, we have already used up as many natural resources as our planet can create in one year, CNN reported. This day even has a name: Earth Overshoot Day (EOD, 地球生态超载日).
The Global Footprint Network, a nonprofit (非营利的) organization based in the United States, Belgium(比利时) and Switzerland, calculates (计算) this day. It has been marking EOD since 1971 by keeping record of how much water, land, fish and forest we use, as well as how much CO2 we're emitting (排放).
Each year, the human population grows and more resources are used. That's why EOD has moved forward by more than two months over the last 20 years. This year, it fell on the earliest date yet – three days earlier than it did last year (Aug 1).
What can we do?
Human beings are now using natural resources 1.75 times faster than they can be renewed(再生), Quartz reported. This has affected the environment in a bad way. For instance, wildfires are becoming more frequent (频繁的). Cities around the world are running out of water. Up to 1 million species (物种) could die out thanks to human activity, Huff Post reported. However, humans are taking some small steps to deal with the problem. Countries like China and India are trying their best to green the planet. But there's still a very long way to go, Science Alert noted.
How much do we use?
Not all countries are equal when it comes to resource usage (使用). Some countries have used more resources than other countries. If everyone lived like Americans do, for example, we would need five Earths. Take a look.
Colorful festive lanterns have been lit up at Yu Garden. The event attracts millions of visitors each Chinese New Year and will last till February 22.
Thirty-nine installations(装置)come alive at 5:30 p. m. every evening. The major draw is a 9-meter-tall pig dressed like the god of wealth to mark the Year of the Pig. Other lanterns involve the city's unique shikumen architecture(建筑), typical dishes and folk culture. A series of lanterns promotes Shanghai brands. The 24 solar terms(节气) are displayed on some of the lanterns.
"It is the only event in Shanghai that makes me feelauthentic Chinese elements and flavor(因素和味道)," said Thiery Sauvage from France who has lived by the garden for seven years.
The annual celebrations, which have been held for 24 years, have become the city's top attraction for tourists during Spring Festival. The month-long celebration attracts about 6 million visitors every year.
To ensure order and safety, the gates of the garden and the Zigzag Bridge will be closed when the number of visitors touches the 30,000 mark. Surveillance cameras(监管摄像)have been installed (安装) at the eight entrances.
Entry to the Yu Garden commercial complex will be 50 yuan(US$7.46) for adults and 30 yuan for children between February 15 and 18. On February 19, Lantern Festival, the fee will be 80 yuan for adults and 50 yuan for children.
You may feel comfortable with some people. You spend an hour with them and feel as if you have known them half a life. These people have something in common. And once we know what it is, we can try to do it ourselves.
How is it done? If you follow the skills, you'll make friends with people quickly.
First of all, good talkers ask questions. One well-known businesswoman says, "At business lunches, I always ask people what they did that morning. It's a common question, but it will get things going." From there you can move on to some other questions. And how he answers will let you know how far you can go.
This point seems clear, but it isn't. Your question should have a point and help to tell what sort of person you are talking to. And to find out, you really have to listen carefully and attentively.
Real listening at least means some things. If someone sticks to one topic, it means he's really interested in it. Real listening also means not just listening to words, but to tones (语气) of voice. If the voice sounds boring, then, it's time for you to change the subject.
Finally, good talkers know well when to say good-bye. Remember to give him a handshake and say, "I've really enjoyed meeting you." Let people know what you feel, and they may walk away feeling as if they've known you half their life.
A. Almost anyone will answer a question. B. It's polite to say goodbye when you're leaving.. C. If you want to see that person again, don't keep it a secret. D. Here are several skills that good talkers have. E. Second, once good talkers have asked questions, they listen to the answers. F. There are some suggestions for you. G. First, it means not to change the subject of the conversation. |
