When Matty Sallin, 34, was working on a degree in art and technology at New York University, he got interesting homework in electronic class. He decided to invent an alarm clock.
"Everybody has to stand it every day, and it is really unpleasant!" he says. He asked different people what they would like to be woken up instead of a noisy alarm. A lot of them said, "The smell of bacon (培根肉)". So Sallin and two classmates invented a new kind of alarm clock: a wooden box with a pig face and a digital clock that uses the smell of cooking bacon instead of the sound to wake someone up. He explains, "There's no danger of burning, because I built it carefully. It uses halogen light bulbs (钨卤灯) instead of a fire for cooking and turns off automatically (自动地) after ten minutes. Yes, the clock itself can do it. Just a few easy steps are needed to set the alarm."
"What you do is to put some frozen bacon in the night before and set the alarm," says Sallin.
"If you set the alarm for 8:00, it will turn on at 7:50 and slowly cook for ten minutes under the halogen bulbs," he says. Then the bulbs turn off and a fan blows the smell out through the nose of the pig.
"So instead of an alarm, you get a bacon smell awake," says Sallin. "Then you can open the door on the side and pull the bacon out and eat it."
When Sallin was a kid, he spent a lot of time making drawings of inventions. "I wanted to make a lift in my backyard and a special tree house," he says. "But I never really thought I could be called an inventor!"
Sallin got an A in the class and went on to other things — but people continue to hear about his invention and email him every day asking where they can buy his alarm clock.

Earth Day was founded in 1970. It is a day to learn about nature and the planet. Today, Earth Day is celebrated around the world.
Earth Day was created by Senator Gaylord Nelson who hoped to raise the awareness (意识) of pollution. He thought this would make people care about the planet.Gaylord Nelson was a senator (参议院) from Wisconsin. He wanted everyone to know the planet was in danger. At that time, some college students were protesting (抗议). They wanted the US to end its war in Vietnam. Nelson was encouraged by these protests and dreamed of a large event about protecting the earth. It would make people take the problem seriously. Nelson shared his idea in 1969. He invited the whole country to join. Letters and telephone calls came in from everywhere. He felt people really cared about what happened to the planet. Earth Day gave them a way to show it.
The first Earth Day was celebrated in April 22nd, 1970. It raised the awareness of environmental problems. About eight months later, the Environmental Protection Agency was created for the purpose of protecting humans' health and the environment.
Since 1970, Earth Day events have grown. In 1990, 200 million people in over 140 countries took part. In 2000, more people got involved. Today, more than 1 billion people celebrate Earth Day. It is one of the largest events (事件) in the world.
Dark clouds appear over the River Mersey and a cold wind is blowing. A few raindrops are beginning to fall. We're in the famous city of Liverpool and we're going to spend this rainy day in the Williamson Tunnels, which were built by a man named Joseph Williamson.
Joseph Williamson was born into a poor family in 1769. At the age of 11, he left home and went to work for a tobacco company. He began at the bottom and worked his way up to become head of the business.
Williamson spent 30 years building these tunnels. From his death to this very day, these tunnels have remained a puzzle to researchers. Nobody knows why Williamson dug tunnels under most of Liverpool, but many think it was to create jobs. It is believed that about half of Liverpool's population worked for him.
I go on a guided tour starting close to where his empire (集团) began in Edge Hill. In the tunnels, the steps leading from rooms below ground to those buildings, which no longer exist, seem particularly ghostly (幽灵似的).
We go into the Double Tunnel. It's just been discovered that it's actually a triple tunnel – but nobody knows why the three tunnels were built on top of each other.
We finish the tour and decide we'll have coffee in the Williamson Tunnels Cafe Bar. There, I notice lots of flyers (宣传单) for bands and theater groups that are coming to play there.
Apart from the obvious attractions like the football clubs, or anything to do with the Beatles, Liverpool has a lot to offer. You should definitely visit Liverpool.
Don't be too quick to judge others

When we're not paying attention to the world around US, it can be easy to misunderstand14is happening or even become angry with others. It is better to keep our eyes open and think about every15when trying to understand a particular situation.

Who is one of the most famous fairy tale writer in China? Well, I believe many children will answer, "Yang Hongying." What makes her so special? In order to find out the answer to this question, I asked her a few questions during a interview. (最近)
In Ms. Yang's opinion, all of us should enjoy our childhood and try to be better. That's also the reason why Ma Xiaotiao, a boy in Ms. Yang's books who has now become a famous name, could be successful(在……以后) he grows up. Ms. Yang said she based the boy on a student of(她的) years ago. The boy's leadership skills and interest in(发现) new things touched Ms. Yang greatly. So she thought his story was(值得) writing.
