A lady once visited a temple that was still being built. She saw a sculptor (雕塑家) making a sculpture. As she watched the man work on the sculpture, she noticed that there was a1sculpture lying nearby.
She felt very strange and asked the sculptor, "2are you making the same two sculptures? Do you need them to put in different places?"
"No," the man answered without3up. "We need only one, but the old one became damaged before I could finish it, so I'm making a4one."
The visitor picked up the damaged sculpture and5it. But she couldn't find anything wrong with it. "Where is the damage?" she asked.
"There is a scratch (擦痕) on the sculpture's6" the sculptor said while continuing his work.
The lady then asked, "Where are you going to7the sculpture?" The sculptor replied that it would be placed on a 20-foot-high platform.
"If the sculpture is up that high, who is going to8that there is a scratch on the nose?" the man asked.
The sculptor stopped his work, looked up at the man and said,"9will know it".
The sculptor chose to stick to a high standard of excellence in his work. Even if other people didn't notice it, to him, his work should be the10. This is an attitude we should all work hard to keep.
People in most villages in Northern China spend winters doing nothing until the planting season arrives in spring. But not so for the villagers of Yandunjiao Village in Shandong Province's Rongcheng City.
"We are much busier in winter than in summer," Gao Yongjin says.
Gao runs the village's biggest guest house, which is less than 10 meters from the sea. Every year thousands of swans fly from Siberia and other areas and stay there from November to April.
"Visitors come to see the swans in winter," Gao says. "They prefer to stay in our village for several days to enjoy seaside life."
Over 60 of the village's 220 families run guest houses.
"You can see our village is so clean," Gao says. "We don't have professional cleaners. We volunteer to keep our village clean because we know what a clean environment means to us."
After the swans leave for their summer places, Gao and other villagers greet tourists who come to Yandunjiao to paint the sea views. Summertime visitors can also fish.
"We're busy all year round," Gao says. "This year, the village has welcomed over 80,000 tourists, who generated 10 million yuan (US$1.53 million)."
Rongcheng was among the second list of 97 demonstration zones (示范区) for developing tourism by using local resources. The list was launched by the Ministry of Culture and. Tourism in Rongcheng on Dec. 17, 2020. It launched the first list of 71 demonstration areas in 2019.
One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order一borrow at least one book from the library for the summer. This was one more way for her to solve my strange problem-inability to read.
In the library, I found my way into the "Children's Room." I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf. The cover of a book caught my eyes. There on the book's cover was a beagle which looked the same as my dog. I had recently had a beagle. He was my best friend, but one morning, he was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the time to care for him. I never forgot my beagle.
My eyes ran across the title, Amos, the Beagle with a Plan. Unknowingly, I had read the title. Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library.
Under a tree, I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with difficulty. Though pages were turned slowly, I got the main idea of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and finally found his way back home. That dog was my dog, and I was the little boy in the book. At the end of the story, my mind continued the final scene of reunion(团聚), on and on, until my own lost dog and I were running together.
My mother's call returned me to the real world. I suddenly realized something: I had read a book, and I had loved reading that book.
I never told my mother what happened that summer, but she saw a slow but remarkable progress in my classroom performance. And years later, she was proud that her son had read thousands of books.
The launch of BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (北斗卫星导航系统) on June 23rd 2020 marks the completion of China's self-developed and operated BeiDou network, one of the four global navigation networks, along with the USA's GPS, Russia's GLONASS and the European Union's Galileo. It also marks the end of the country's dependence on America for an important service: location data.
GPS was the earliest network to provide global location data. The system is owned by America's government, which means American officials could decide to turm off or downgrade the signals coming from GPS satellites. The main purpose of building BDS is to give China full control over a navigation system.
Work on BDS began in the 1990s and included three phases. The first phase was about building the BeiDou-1 system, which started in 1994 and in 2000 provided positioning, short message telecommunication and timing services in China. The second phase一the BeiDou-2 system, which started in 2004, was completed in 2012. The BeiDou-2 ground system not only serves China but also provides users in the Asia-Pacific region with more than ten satellites and offered services above. The third phase involved the development of the BeiDou-3 system, which started in 2009 and was completed in June, 2020. As one of the IGE members, China is always cooperating with foreign countries and use BDS to serve global users with high performance and high quality in scientific research.
BeiDou's satellites are more advanced than those of GPS. In the Asia-Pacific region, BeiDou claims a 10-cm accuracy, compared with 30cm positioning without doing wrong offered by GPS. America began upgrading its system in 1997 but it may take another 15 years to finish the project.
