When I was a child of seven years old, my friends, on a holiday, filled my pocket with coins. I went at once to a shop where they sold1for children. Being attracted by the sound of the whistle that I had seen in the hands of another boy, I handed over all my money for2. I then came home, and went whistling all over the house, quite3with my whistle, but disturbing all the family.4I told my brothers and sisters the bargain* I had made, they said I had given four times as much as the whistle was worth. They put me in mind of what good things I night have bought5the rest of the money, and laughed at me because I made the decision so6.Thinking about the matter gave me more7than the pleasure that the whistle gave me.
From then on, when I wanted to buy something I did not need indeed, I said to myself. "Don't give too much for the whistle," and!8my money. As I grew up and came into the world, I met with many, very many,9gave too much for the whistle.
lf I knew a miser who10every kind or comfortable living, all the pleasure of doing good to others and all the joys of friendship in order to gather and keep the wealth —"11 man," said I," you pay too much for your whistle. "When I met a man of pleasure, who did not try to improve his mind but12spent most of his time having a good time, paying no attention to his health, "Mistaken man, you are bringing13to yourself, instead of pleasure; you are paying too much for your whistle." if I saw someone who was crazy about his own14put his money into fine clothes, bags and earrings, and for which he had run into debt. "Also," said I, "he has paid much, too much, for his whistle."
In short, the great sufferings of humans are largely due to their putting a15value on things. They give "too much for their whistle."
Offices are usually in tall buildings. But actually, offices can be anywhere. There are many interesting and creative offices around the world. Let's take a look!
The loneliest office Where is the world's "loneliest" office? It is near a glacier* in the Tanggula Mountains in Tibet. The office has just one desk and a chair. It is the workplace for Luobu Renqing who was born in the1990s. He wants to protect the glacier's water from pollution and at his office, he can keep an eye on the precious water in his hometown. |
The tube office Look at this tube office in Spain! Half of the office is dug into the ground in a forest outside Madrid. Workers can enjoy the beautiful view through the window while working. This also helps the office stay away from hot weather even during summers. |
The cave office Do you want to work in a cave? The workers of the Swedish lnternet company Bahnhof do this. The company turned a big cave in the White Mountains into offices. Since the cave is 30 meters underground, it's very safe and cool so that it keeps the company's servers working well. |
The coniainer office The company Pallotta Team Work moved its office to an empty house. The office is in Los Angeles, US. People work in shipping containers and tents. There are seven tented villages. Here, people use skylights when they are working. Air conditioning is only used when many people need it, which can use less electricity. |
The annual gala, which is held on Lunar New Year's Eve, has become a tradition during Spring Festival celebrations. Millions of families switch on their TV sets to watch the gala—usually lasting over four hours — after having a grand dinner.
Consisting of a lot of performances, from music programs to crosstalk and acrobatic shows, the gala which has been held for 38 years, gathers many stars and artists. Even for many famous stars, getting a chance to perform on the gala's stage is an honor and a gateway to be more widely-known.
But China Media Group, the hosts and broadcasters of the gala, have founded a program to help ordinary people and lesser-known artists to compete for an opportunity to perform in the gala. One of the lucky groups was a children's choir.
The children's choir from Qihang School in Dayuan Village in Hunen beat lots of other competitors from different places and finally showed on the 2021 Spring Festival Gala. The headmaster of the school told China Daily that he and all the children were very excited and rejoiced upon hearing the news. The school set up the choir in 2017 to increase the children's self-confidence with the power of music. Over recent years, the choir's teachers have kept a close eye on musical competitions and variety shows, as they thought attending such events would make the children more social. They did try so many times, but they never expected that they would be chosen to perform on the gala stage. Some children said their parents were so proud to see them appear on TV.
Chen Linchun, the chief director of the 2021Spring Festival Gala, selected the finalists on Feb 5, along with more than 10 stars. He says the effort is to make the program a down-to-earth platform that is open to ordinary people." We wish to tell the audience that it is possible to be part of the gala if you have enough passion and talent to achieve your dreams," he says.
The basic aerodynamics used to make a paper airplane is very similar to the aerodynamics of a real plane.
A simple piece of paper will fall down when it is dropped. But if we fold the paper in a specific manner, it will fly. There are four types of forces in physics that play important roles in making a paper airplane soar in the air.
Surely lift is a force that holds the airplane in the air. It acts directly against the weight of the airplane. Though the whole plane uses this force, the wings are the ones that bring it to the maximum*level. Both the upper and lower surfaces of the wings are responsible for turning the flow of air.
Thrust is the forward force that is used to push the airplane in the forward direction. It comes from the engines of a real aircraft, but for a paper airplane, the human and artificiality produces this force while throwing the plane hard into air.
Drag, also known as air resistance*, is a force to pervert an object moving in gas or liquid. This force stops the movement of the aircraft in air. It occurs due to the surface friction*between the solid surface of the airplane and air molecules*.This too acts through the center of pressure of the object.
Another force is gravity acting on the airplane and continually trying to pull it down towards the earth. A real aircraft makes use of many lift, drag, and thrust forces against the gravitational force. In case of a paper airplane, when we fly it in the air with some energy, it uses that energy to stay in air for some time. As the energy goes on reducing, the plane moves downwards. As a result, the airplane fails to remain in the sky when all the energy is exhausted.
The wetness of the air also has a great effect on the flight of a paper airplane. As paper takes in water, it changes the density*of the airplane finally. So making the airplane out of a thick piece of paper proves to be more effective.
A real plane has additional parts used for efficient flying. To some degree, the weight of the passengers and luggage affect the above types of forces. Therefore, next time you make a paper airplane, keep in mind these points to make one that has a long-lasting flight.
I was a sailor in the U.S. Navy. On Christmas Eve, 1994, I was on a one-day leave in San Francisco. I had won 300 dollars at poker, but I couldn't help feeling sad. The news came that we'd be pulling out before the New Year for the South Pacific. I'd just heard that another friend had been killed in Europe. And here I was, an 18-year-old man alone in a strange city. Nothing seemed to make sense. What was I going to be fighting for, anyway?
I spent most of the day walking through crowds until a scene caught my attention. In front of a toyshop window was a thin boy around nine years old, his eyes gazing at the two electric trains. Beside him was a middle-aged man who was pulling the boy to leave.
Suddenly the boy was me nine short years before. I could see the same hope as well as the act of trying to hide the disappointment at the fact that Dad couldn't afford those trains. And I saw the unwilling turning away and then the one last look.
I grabbed the boy by the arm, and said "My name is George."
"Jeffrey Hollis." he managed to reply.
"Well, Jeff Hollis," I said in my best grown-up voice, "we are going to get those trains."
His eyes grew wide, and he let me lead him into the shop.
"We'll take the two trains," I said to the shopkeeper, "Right now, if we can."
The surprise on Jeff's father—Mr. Hollis's face made me think of my own father. I could see a hard-workingman who broke his back to make a living. I explained to him how I had seen myself in his son. And he welcomed me home to share their table.
After supper, I read to Jeff and his sisters until they went to bed.
"I guess you know we've got a lot to do before morning,"Mr. Hollis said. His words surprised me for a moment. Then I understood I was a man now, with adult responsibilities, so I joined him at what turned out to be nearly an all-night job of getting the trains put together and set up.
"Dreams," I thought sleepily, "Kid dreams." The next morning, Jeff woke me up for he had remembered I had to be back by eight. He handed me the present he had bought.
"Merry Christmas, George." he hugged me warmly. The moment of parting was bittersweet. Mr. Hollis and Mrs. Hollis thanked me, but I was the thankful one.
On my way back to the base, I realized I had no more doubts. I had found mere in this experience than I had received from any patriotic speech. I knew now what this war as well as all the fighting was about for me.

Last week I went to an art show. A painting caught mv eves. To my surprise, it was painted by Steven, one of my (学生).Then suddenly those that came into mv mind were many (特别的) moments with him.
Steven was from a poor family. His parents died on his fifth grade in the primary school. Usually our school provided gloves for poor children, (包括) Steven. He was so happy when he received a pair. He loved to wear them and they were always (干净的) than anybody else's.
Steven was quite good at painting. What's more, he could (容易地) understand what I described in class. I wondered (是否) he had enough money to buy the paper for painting or not, so sometimes I gave him some. And I often showed his paintings to the class. He (鼓励) a lot by what I did for him.
One day just before the summer vacation, he decided (借) some art books from me. When the new term began, he showed some of his (绝妙的;了不起的) paintings to me. We talked a lot and he said he would keep on.
He entered a famous art (大学).After graduation, though he had many difficulties, he never gave up. His hard work and strong mind led to his success.
Do you know the 24 solar terms of China? Lidong is one of them. Falling (叶子) and cold winds mean the arrival of another season. It is the (象征) of the winter start.
To welcome lidong, people have many colorful customs that can light up the cold days. One of (流行的) customs is a big meal. Chinese people always (相信,认为) winter is a season for storage. Eating well helps people store energy to beat the cold in winter and prepare for the growth in the coming spring. In the north, people prefer eating dumplings, which means celebrating the change of (秋天) to winter. In the south, chicken, duck and fish are people's (最喜欢的) food for this day.
However, some of these customs have (已经) disappeared. In the past, lidong was also a time for people to store vegetables under the ground. Nowadays, (百) of people buy fresh vegetables at the supermarket instead. And new winter customs are being created in certain places. Can anyone (想象)what customs are in the north now? ln Harbin,,many men usually spend some time (游泳) in the winter waters during lidong. It's really cold in the water.
