That cold January night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was, walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theatre. With opening night only a week away, I was still learning my lines. I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco. City life had become too much for me.
As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings, I felt very small and cold. I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers. Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets.
About a block from my apartment, I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk.
Suddenly I wasn't cold or tired anymore. I ran out of the door and back to where I'd heard the noise. Although I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found. Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the garbage truck(垃圾车) pull up to the sidewalk next to me. When a voice called from the inside, "Alisa Camacho?" I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man with an amused look in his eye. "Is this what you're looking for?" he asked, holding up a small square shape.
It was nearly 3 a.m. by the time I got into bed. I wouldn't get much sleep that night, but I had gotten my wallet back. I also had gotten back some enjoyment of city life. I realized that the city couldn't be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other.
This dictionary tells you about English words and how to use them in reading, writing and speaking English. It not only gives the meaning of words, it can also help you with spelling, word-building, grammar and pronunciation.

The most important reason for using a dictionary is to find out the meaning of a word—its DEFINITION.
In this dictionary, the definitions have been written using only 2000 words. This means that the definitions of even the most difficult words are simply explained (简单解释) and easy to understand.
Nowadays more and more people like to travel, especially when vacations come. A great number of people rush out of their homes or companies to travelling spots. They either drive or take a bus, a train, a ship and so on. Some even ride bikes.
However, there is another way of travelling — poorism. People have a tour in the poorest areas of the world. Some people may take a one-day poor tour, and some even pay to stay in very poor neighborhoods to experience the lowest living standards in the world. Poorism tours take place around the world, and not just in the third world countries. You can, for instance, tour New York neighborhoods in the Bronx, in the Bund of Shanghai. Such tours can take people into the heart of poor areas within some large and rich cities. These tours may awaken people to pay more attention to long-standing poverty, or the effects of war.
Some suggest that tours in the poor areas can raise social care. And the money from the tour can be donated to help the people there.
Everyone wants to perform well at school. Add these tips to your life and you should be on your way to being a top student!
I cannot stress how important it is to pay attention to what your teacher is teaching you. Take part in class discussions if you have something worth adding. Pay attention during class.
Taking notes is important. You don't need to write down every single word your teacher says but write down what he or she writes on the board, or any special fact you think you might need for a test. This way it will help you learn more effectively by actually thinking about what you are writing.
Don't skip school. You will be missing out on(错失) stuff. However, you will have more work and you have missed lectures. Also, try not to be late for class. It's most likely that your teacher won't appreciate it and you will get yourself behind.
If you have an" I don't care about school or this class" attitude, then teachers will be less willing to help you with problems. The same goes for lazy attitude. Have a respectful attitude to the teacher and other students. Try not to laugh when other students make mistakes.
Always ask questions. If you don't understand, ask someone. Read your textbook and notes, and then if that fails, ask a teacher, friend, classmate, parent, etc.
A. Be prepared.
B. Write in your own words.
C. Staying organized will be helpful.
D. Keep a good attitude (态度) towards things.
E. There is no shame (羞愧) in needing some help.
F. It is true that you could make up the work.
G. Pay attention to everything the teacher says.
Making friends is a skill. Like most skills, it 1 with patience(耐心). If you want to meet people and make friends, you must be willing to 2 some action. You must first go where there are people. You won't make friends staying home 3.
Joining a club or group, talking to those who like the same things 4 you do is much easier. Or join someone 5 some activity. Many people are 6 when talking to new people. 7 all, meeting strangers means seeing the unknown. And it's human nature to feel a bit 8 about the unknown. Most of fears (害怕) about dealing 9 new people come from doubts about 10. We imagine other people are 11 us — finding us too tall or too short, too this or too that. But don't forget that they must be feeling the same way. Try to accept yourself 12 you are ,and try to put the other at ease (放松). You'll both feel more comfortable.
Try to act self-confident(自信) even 13 you don't feel that way when you 14 a room full of strangers. Walk tall and straight, look15 at other people and smile. If you see someone you'd like to 16, say something. Don't wait for 17 person to start a conversation.
Just meeting someone 18 does not mean that you'll make friends with that person. 19 is based on mutual(相互的) likings and "give and take". They take time and effort to develop. And there are things that keep a new friendship from20.
I don't think it's my parents' job to check my homework. Since we have already grown up, we cannot act like little (baby) and depend on our parents all the time. We must learn to be (independence).
I remember when I was in Grade Three, my parents (ask) me to check my homework by myself. I didn't know what to do at first, so I only cried. But after that, I got used to (check) my own homework in my studies.
Checking homework by ourselves is good habit. It can help us find mistakes in exams more (easy), it can also save the teachers a lot of time they check our homework, and it can also let our parents worry (little) about our studies.
Some day in the future, Mum and Dad (leave) us. So we should start to learn to do everything by (we) and really understand how important independence is.

Last weekend, after finish my homework, I wanted to relax me, so I went to thecinema to watch Journey to the West with my friends. We hoped to enjoy ourselves there. However, some of the people there makes me feel very unhappy.
When we arrived there, the movie been on for ten minutes. We found our seats quick and sat down. What's worse, a few guys were talking loudly or even shouting when they saw some excited pictures. Also, some people threw away plastic bag, paper and other rubbish on the floor, that made the floor very dirty.
As we know, the cinema is a public place where we can have a nice time. All of us are supposed to obey the rules in the public. Only in this way can we make public places more comfortable.
