A ten-year-old boy from Howell, Michigan is being praised as a hero thanks to his persistence (坚持) that led to saving the life of an elderly neighbor. The event happened late in an evening when Danny DiPietro was being driven home from hockey practice by his mom.
That's when the young boy noticed an open garage (车库) and a figure that he believed was a dog outside an apartment building near his house. Given the freezing weather, the young boy got a feeling that something was not right. But instead of dismissing it like most kids at his age, he insisted that his mother, Dawn, find out what was going on. Dawn tried to make Danny believe that no one would leave a dog out in such cold weather, but he refused to take no for an answer.
Dawn finally gave in and decided to drive to the area with the family dog and see if there was any truth in Danny' s hunch (直觉). Sure enough, as she got closer to the apartment building she noticed a garage that was wide open and someone waving madly for help. Upon getting there, she realized that it was not a dog the young boy had seen, but Kathleen St. Onge. The 80-year-old woman had fallen down on some ice in front of her garage and had been lying there for two hours, unable to get up.
Dawn rushed home to get her husband to help and called 911. The two then returned with some blankets to cover Ms. St. Onge, while they were waiting for the ambulance to arrive. Though still in hospital, the elderly woman is recovering well and forever grateful to Danny for following his hunch!
Tens of thousands of Chinese have joined a debate on whether students should be separated into science and liberal arts classes in high school, a practice that allows them to stay competitive in college entrance exam by choosing preferred subjects. The debate came after the Ministry of Education and began to ask for opinions from the public on Friday on whether it was necessary and possible to stop the dividing system, which has been accepted for decades.
In a survey started by www. qq. com, more than 260,000 people cast their votes as of Saturday, with 54 percent of those voted for the abolishment and 40 percent against.
A netizen from Chengdu said:" Science can activate the mind, while arts could strengthen their learning ability. "
But some people disagreed with him. A netizen nick-named "gentle scholar" said the students would have more burden if they have more subjects to study. "You don't even know how difficult the courses are. I suggest a survey among students. "
"Abolish the current system of division? We have to study nine subjects? Finally we will study everything and have learnt little," wrote another netizen.
Li Yanling, an education expert in Beijing, called on education authorities to consider students' school burden.
Chinese students are required to choose either arts or science subjects after ten years' education, which include six years in primary school, three years in junior high school and one year in senior high school.
Besides the Chinese language, mathematics and English, which are must for everyone, science students are required to take physics, biology and chemistry, while arts students study politics, history and geography.
Even though they're not the most exciting things in the world, plants have attracted us ever since the days of early humans. They may not do any tricks or greet us when we come home at night like a dog would, but that doesn't mean they're any less interesting than animals.
However, just when we thought we knew everything we could about them, a recent study found that plants may have a secret ability that has gone unnoticed all this time.
According to the study by Australian biologist Monica Gagliano, published in the journal Oecologia, plants may be able to "hear" sounds . To come to this conclusion, Gagliano and her team planted pea seedlings (幼苗) in a pair of different Y-shaped pots with two arms. The first pot's arms led to fresh water, while the other's led to either dry soil or a sealed (密封的) plastic tube containing flowing water. Naturally, the first pot's seedlings grew toward the water. What's surprising, however, is that the second pot's seedlings grew toward the sealed water supply but not the soil.
"They just knew the water was there even if the only thing to discover was the sound of it flowing inside the pipe," Gagliano told Scientific American. She believes that plants are able to use their leaves to discover sound waves, which make tiny vibrations (振动) as they're produced. This could explain why so many people believe that singing or playing music to their plants helps them grow." I had a plant that I used to wash the leaves of once a week and sing to," plant lover Heather Goodall told BBC News. "It grew from being about 2 feet tall to 7 feet tall in just a couple of years. "
So, does this mean we should start treating our plants like pets? Not necessarily, although perhaps it does mean we should give them more respect. "I would like to see plants accepted more as the amazing and interesting living beings, and less as just a source of human nutrition," Fatima Cvrckova, a scientist at Charles University in the Czech Republic, told BBC News.
There is an old Spanish saying which states, "Tomorrow is often the busiest day of the week." How many times have we put off our dreams until tomorrow? We have to go for them now! Tomorrow is not promised. Nobody likes to talk about death, but everybody is going to die at one point. None of us know the day or the hour. Don't go to your tomb with unrealized dreams. Make the decision to go after every dream, big or small right now. One of the biggest dream killers is fear. Many people could have achieved amazing things if only they weren't afraid. Just think about all the things you've wanted to do, but allowed fear to convince you that you weren't capable, or good enough. Fear is not real. It is a product of thoughts you create. Choose not to let fear stop you from achieving your dreams. ·Take action to realize your dream. You can dream about writing a great play but it's never going to happen unless you actually put pen to paper. You can dream about finding a cure for cancer, but it will never happen unless you actually become equipped with the necessary tools to find that cure. ·Possibilities are waiting on you. There are so many amazing opportunities and people waiting on you. How do you get to them? Simple! Follow your dream. You'll never see those doors if you sit around waiting on a dream to happen, instead of actually working to make it happen.
A. Our dreams should not, and cannot wait.
B. Therefore, today is all we have.
C. Don't let fear win.
D. In other words, dreams don't work unless you do.
E. Doors that you couldn't imagine open up when you go after what you want.
F. You were born into the world with a unique gift, which nobody can copy.
G. You'll be much happier if you go for it.

After I made it, they16me and tried to give me some money. I told them I wouldn't accept anything, and that the best17would be to find someone else to help out. I had a interesting dream last night. I dreamed that I took part in a race. At first, I could not to run very fast and fell behind. So I didn't lose heart and kept running. All the students on the playground cheer me on, "Come on!" I was so encouraged that I ran faster and fast till I caught up all the other runners. I felt as if flying like a superman.
In the end, I got to the finishing line firstly. I won the race. I felt very proudly of myself. Many of my classmate threw me up into the air. Just at that time I woke up and found me still in bed!
