I believe listening is a powerful (强效的) medicine.
It was Sunday. I had the last1to see and I got into her room. She was an old woman, sitting on the bed, trying to2her socks. Usually I said something like this: "How are you felling? The nurse says your son is visiting you today. I believe you are 3seeing him. "
She4me with a serious voice, " Sit down, doctor. This is my story, not yours. "
I was5and embarrassed(尴尬的). I sat down and helped her with the socks. She began to tell me that her only son lived not far from her 6she had not seen him for five years. She believed her health problems were worse because of 7her son. After hearing her story and helping her put on her socks ,I asked if there was8else I could do for her . She9her head and smiled. All she wanted 10to do was to listen.
Each story is 11Some are clear, others are not. Some are true; others are not, yet all those things do not really 12 . What matters to the storyteller is that the story is heard.
Listening to someone's story costs nothing but it is the key to healing (康复). I often think of13the woman taught me, and I14myself of the importance of stopping, sitting down and truly listening. I believe in the power of 60. 15.

Imagine a perfect day:the weather is good and everything seems fine. When, suddenly, your mobile phone loses its signal, the television has no programs, and you can't get online with your computer.
What has happened? These are just the types of problems a solar storm (太阳风暴) might cause.
You may not think of storms as putting our society in danger, But today, a solar storm is as serious as other bad events, such as earthquakes.
A solar storm is caused by solar flares (太阳耀斑) large explosions (爆炸) near the sun that can give off lots of energy. The strong energy can stop the satellite systems (卫星系统) that control our computers, telecom networks and so on. These storms can even cause the power to go out for weeks or months.
In the past few months, scientists have recorded some of the strongest sun flares in years, The most recent one happened around Valentine's Day, 2011,It caused radio and satellite signals to go down in some northern cities in China.
"Solar flare activity is going to be much worse than what we've seen in the past. We're not talking about a few cities losing power, it could be half of the country, maybe more. "SolarStormWarning.com, a US website about space weather, warned, Scientists say that little can be done to predict such a storm.
Governments around the world are trying to work together before the next storm, although they are not sure when that may happen.
①Solar flares give off lots of energy.
②People cannot get online with their computers.
③Solar storms happen.
④Satellite systems are stopped.
When is the best time for us to enjoy the bright moon? Of course, it is Mid-Autumn Festival, one of the most important holidays in China. We look at the moon, eat mooncakes, and get together with our families. The tradition is thousands of years old.
The moon, the key part of the festival, is special to most Chinese people. We enjoy and admire it. We use the round and crescent moon (新月) to describe reunion and separation.
Our admiration of the moon dates back to ancient times. There is the legend of Chang'e flying to the moon- the most famous story about the moon. Many Chinese poets connect the moon with homesickness (乡愁). For example, "Beside my bed a pool of light. Is it hoarfrost (霜) on the ground? " from Jing Ye Si (Thoughts in the Silent Night) by Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai.
Today ,the moon is still important to Chinese people. The Miao people in Guizhou province has a special custom. On the night of Mid-Autumn Festival, young people dance under the moon to find their other half.
However, Western people see the moon differently. In some stories, the full moon is somewhat scary to people. The most well-known legend is the werewolf (狼人). A werewolf usually looks like a human, but changes into a wolf-like creature (生物) when there is a full moon. Also, if someone is very excited or even crazy about something, others may joke, "It must be a full moon. "
Do you use emojis (表情符号) on your smartphone? One of the nice things about emojis is that people from all over the world can understand them.
Take the basic smiley face emoji as an example, At first, I thought it was just a normal, friendly smile. Later, I found out that it can mean something different, I read online that although the emoji is smiling, its eyes are looking downward, which makes it look like a fake smile (假笑).
Or what about the smiling face with a waving hand? But actually, Chinese people use this emoji to show that they don't want to talk to someone一the hand is waving "goodbye", as in"never talk to me again".
One of my favorite emojis is the "cry-laugh" emoji. At first, it meant "rolling on the floor laughing", or ROFL. But over the years, the meaning has changed. It is often used to describe situations that are so tragic (悲伤的) that you can't help but laugh to cheer yourself up.
It looks like the language of emojis changes over time, just like real language.
A. It can mean that someone is looking down on you or even laughing at you. B. So we should be careful how we use it when speaking to others. C. But I have recently learned that some emojis have different meanings in China. D. In fact, some emojis also have double meanings in Western countries. E. It certainly looks friendly enough. |
There was a man who was going through hard times. His wife left him. He went bankrupt (破产) after only a year in business. Although he worked hard, failure was all that he had seen. Struggling(挣扎) with this, he left everything behind and went into the forest. There, he met an old man who had lived there for a long time. He shared his story with the old man. "Can you give me one good reason not to give up? " he asked the old man.
"Look, " the old man said, pointing to two plants. "Do you see that fern (蕨类植物) and bamboo there? "
"Yes, " the man answered.
"When I planted the fern and bamboo seeds (种子),I took very good care of them. In a short period of time, the fern quickly grew from the earth, " the old man went on.
"Although I watered and took care of the bamboo seed for years, it did not sprout (发芽). There was no sign of growth. But I did not give up on the bamboo seed and went on looking after it. In the fifth year, a small sprout came out of the earth. And within six months, the tree grew a hundred feet tall.
"The little bamboo tree had been growing underground for the past four years, developing a root system (根系) strong enough for its ground growth in the fifth year. If it hadn't done this, it would not be as strong as it is now. So you know, all the time you were struggling, you were actually growing strong roots, " the old man said.
Steven lost an arm in a traffic accident years ago. On that day, he was hit by a car. His left arm was(bad) hurt. "I can't feel my hand! " Steven shouted when he woke up in the hospital. It was the only thing he could think of to say, although it did him no good at all. It was a very time for him.
But life went on. Steven spent the next two years in the hospital. At first, he couldn't even tie his shoes, or open a bottle of water by (he). Later on, with the support of his wife, he realized that he had nobut to face life bravely. He started to take part in all kinds of activities. He even decided to learn to play the violin. Steven knew about playing the violin and had no one to ask for help until he met Lam, an amateur (业余的)(violin).
Steven became Lam's(one) student. He practiced(play) the violin with
Lam's help. Sometimes he even playedpublic. When he played on the street, what people offered was not sympathy (同情),but admiration (赞美).
Steven said playing the violin hasn't made life easier for him, and he still has to
new challenges every day. However, he won't give up. And he said he will never stop trying new things.
