Francesca was the best swimmer on the school team. She could swim a long way. She swam the fastest. She became captain ( 队长) of the team earlier this year, though she was the youngest. All the other girls wanted to be like Francesca. The biggest race of this year was this Friday. Francesca's team would compete with Leeward Middle. It was a strong team. Francesca was nervous (紧张的) in the days before the race. She couldn't eat or sleep well. She couldn't concentrate ( 集中精神) in class. All she could think about was how her team could win.On Wednesday afternoon, Francesca wasn't feeling very well. This was more than just being nervous. She visited the school nurse. The nurse took her temperature and checked ( 检 查) her throat. The nurse called Francesca's mom and sent her home. Francesca was sad. She caught a cold right before her big race! The race was very important for her school. What if she could not go? The next morning, Francesca woke up feeling better. Her mom kept her home from school all day so she could rest more.
On Friday after school, Francesca and her teammates did their best in the race. Her team won in the end. Francesca even set a school record (纪录)! It brought her great joy.
Jamie loved to climb things. Her mom said she started to climb things when she was nine months old. She didn't remember that far back, but she sure did like to climb! She would try to climb up every tree she saw. She climbed up every hill in the town with her best friend. She liked to climb anything high in the house ,too.
One afternoon, Jamie was climbing on her dad's car, when she suddenly fell on her right wrist (手腕). She shouted and shouted.Mom came outside quickly and helped Jamie go inside to ice ( 冰敷 ) her wrist. The next day, Jamie's wrist looked dark. She couldn't touch it. It had been hard to sleep the night before, also. It was difficult to try to carry something with that hand.
Mom took Jamie to the doctor in the morning. The doctor said that Jamie needed a cast (石膏).
For the next weeks, Jamie had to be careful not to get water on the cast. It started to smell, too, because Jamie couldn't wash her arm under the cast.
After two weeks, Jamie was so happy to get the cast off. Now she could get back to playing outside, swimming, and maybe a little climbing!
Jamie has learned to be more careful, but she won't stop doing one of her favorite things!
In the late 1990s, a New York City schoolteacher named Angela Duckworth found something surprising. In her math classes, some of the kids with lower IQ scores ( 低智商分数) were getting the highest grades, and some of the smartest kids were getting the lowest grades.
To try to solve this mystery (奥秘), Duckworth began to study different people. She asked people to rate ( 评 价) themselves — for example,"I finish whatever I start." In another study, she asked people some questions such as, "Would you like to have a dollar now or two dollars tomorrow?"
From her studies, Duckworth got to know that successful people have some personality traits ( 个性特点) in common. First of all, they have self-control. A person with self-control can avoid distractions ( 避 免 分 心) and wait for something better to happen in the future. Secondly, they have"grit". People with grit work hard and don't give up. They stay with a piece of work even if it's hard, or if it takes a long time.
Is it possible to have self-control and grit? Duckworth believes so. One way is to follow the "Hard Thing"rule: choose something that is hard for you, such as learning a new language. Practice it every day, even if you don't like doing it. Don't give up! To be successful, you need to stay with it.
Max and I used to share toys (玩具) with each other. But things became different when he got a model car from his grandma on his birthday. He didn't even ask me to touch it. I was so sad that I decided to buy one.
I told my mom about it, but she didn't agree. I talked to her again and again, and finally we made a deal (协议). I would clean the recyclable rubbish bin (可回收垃圾箱) in the kitchen for 10 days. If I could do my job well, Mom would buy me a model car. It didn't sound like a big deal, did it? I said yes even before my mom finished her talk.
However, I made a mistake on the first day. There were three big bins of different colors in front of our house. I opened one and threw the rubbish into it. When I was about to leave, I found that was a red bin for common rubbish. I didn't know what to do. Then Mom came out and helped me get all the rubbish out and put it in the yellow bin. When everything was done, Mom said, "It's OK to make a mistake, but be careful next time."
I did carefully from then on, and finally I got my model car. It was my great work that helped me get it. My heart began to sing when Mom handed it to me!
Anger is a kind of feeling . When your teacher gives you too much homework, when your team loses an important game, when a friend borrows your favorite thing and then breaks it, you may get angry.
. For example, you breathe faster, your face turns red, and you may want to break something or hit someone, but sometimes you hide your anger. For example, you may hide it in your heart. The problem is that if you do this, you may get a headache or your stomach may hurt.
In fact, it's not good to hide your anger, and it's normal for you to get angry sometimes. . When you get angry, you can talk about it with adults, such as parents, teachers, etc . Here are some other things you can do when you start to feel angry: count from 1 to 100;give someone a hug go for a bike ride; think about good things, etc.
Remember that when you are angry, how you act can make everything better or worse .
A. Many things can make you angry B. Don't let your anger control you. C. As soon as you find your problems, you may cry to relax. D.Usually, your body will tell you when you are angry. E. After doing that, you'll find those bad feelings can start to go away. |

She used to sleep on the sidewalk of the Fifth Street Post Office. I could smell her before I came close. She (wear) dirty clothes and her mouth was nearly toothless. If she was not asleep, she talked to (she). What a poor old lady!
One Thanksgiving, we had lots of food (leave) over. I thought about the old lady. She might be still hungry. So I packed the food up and rode over to the Fifth Street. It was a cold night. There was hardly anyone out. But I knew she would stay at the same place and I would find her (easy). There she was, sitting against a tree near the post office. She (dress) as she always was. I went to her and said, "I've brought you some food. Would you like some turkey and apple pie?"However, the old woman didn't seem to be very (excite) about this. She looked at me and said, "Oh, thank you very much, but someone has given (I) food earlier and I'm quite full now. Why don't you take it to someone else who (need) it?"
Her manners were gracious (亲切的). I was the person who didn't know what (say). An old lady whose life was (bad) than most of us still .
