I love animals a lot. When I first came to the United States. I1together with a local family that had a lovely dog named Charlie. One week the whole family was away for a trip, so they asked me to give Charlie a2every day. I was so fond of Charlie that I said yes without3. The first day they left, I went to the park nearby to walk Charlie. I kept him on the leash (牵狗绳) and4towards the park. As soon as we arrived at the park, Charlie stopped to do a poop (大便). I waited5until Charlie was done. Then I kept walking. Ten seconds later, I heard a (n)6coming from behind. Turning around, I saw an old lady walking her own dog7. She gave me a bag when she came close to me. Seeing my8look, she explained that the bag was for the dog poop. She told me that once there's rain, the dog poop left on the ground would go everywhere, sending out a strong smell and polluting the environment in the park. Feeling a sense of9, I walked back and put the dog poop in the bag. From that day on, whenever I walked Charlie, I would take some10just in case he would do a poop.

Christmas Traditions
Since about 400 AD, Christmas day has been celebrated on 25th December. This date was the old mid-winter festival in pre-Christian times, around the time of the longest night and the shortest day. Christmas in the 21st century has many traditions.
Shops can make about 60 per cent of their year's income in the three months before Christmas. So most shops get ready for it in October. The shopping centres are beautifully decorated and stay open late at night. The first time this happened was in 1867 when Macys', a famous shop in New York, stayed open until midnight on Christmas Eve (24th December).
By mid-December, almost every house, shop and street has a Christmas tree. This tradition was started by the Germans as early as 700 AD. In the northern countries of the world, winter is cold and dark and most trees lose their leaves. The beautiful green trees decorated with lights and coloured glass balls give people hope that spring will come again.
Father Christmas is known across the world with his white hair, red coat and big bag of toys. Young children are told that he lives it in the north of Finland and makes toys for them. By tradition, he brings the toys to children at midnight, on the night before Christmas.
On Christmas day a traditional meal is eaten, usually turkey and a rich, spicy cake. Some people hate Christmas. Others feel it is a magical and exciting time. They love seeing family and friends; they also love the traditions. Love it or hate it, Christmas is a time to look back over the old year and forward to the new one.
At the end of August this year I moved from London to a small town in Quebec, Canada, called Matane to work as an English teacher. Patience is a word that has appeared in many forms over the past two months.
I don't see myself as being the most patient person in the world, but I was deeply impressed by my experience in the first week of teaching. I had just finished a discussion with two students and just as they were leaving the classroom, one of them turned back and said "Thank you for your patience." That was an early reminder of the importance being patient as a teacher. Moreover, patience in the classroom can be the difference between building students' confidence in a language and breaking down their confidence entirely. Being patient as a teacher means empathizing with students. It is not easy to learn a new language and allowing students to find their way will benefit them in the long term.
Living my life in French is not easy but the people of Quebec are very patient. Quebecers repeat things several times and they are more than happy to wait while I find the correct words to express myself. It's a learning process, but with the patience of others the process is less frightening.
When I first arrived in Matane, I kept getting headaches from having to concentrate all the time due to the language. I had to keep reminding myself that it would take time, and two months later the headaches are a distant memory and my ears have become more used to the Quebecois accent. The key is to be patient with yourself. There is no short cut to learning a language, but it will be worth it in the end.
I sill remember my first day of second grade. I was led to a classroom. No teacher yet. Girls talking and laughing. Boys playing games.
I took some paper and a pencil, picked a desk, and went to work. Minutes later, a girl came over and sat on top of my desk.
"What are you doing?" she said.
"I am doing Fun with Number" I replied. Then I rose from my seat to get my pencil sharpener. I had no idea that when I stood, the desk would fall over and hurt her leg.
Her name was Lucy. From that day on we got to know each other, and she became my best friend. Now we have been close friends for more than 60 years. We often get together and recall the past.
Some TV advertisements try to tell us what children need for school, new shoes, clothes, and schoolbags. But really, children's needs are simple. Besides the basics—to be fed, cared for, and loved- they need the gift of friendship.
For years, I feared how people saw me. But one day, I finally understood I didn't need to be smart or pretty or popular, but just needed to be kind.
My grandson William recently finished his preschool and received a prize for "friendship". Even an Olympic medal wouldn't make me prouder! I think children need to know that they are loved. They need to know they have all they need and that the best way to win friends is to be kind.
