Huge Waves Destroying Arctic Ice Faster than Expected

Ice covers much of the Arctic Ocean. Some pieces of ice are huge, like moving islands. As temperatures have increased , however, some of the ice has begun to disappear. Scientists have discovered huge waves in the arctic waters.

The waves were discovered by accident in May, 2010. Scientist Aleksey Marchenko and his students set out on a trip. They wanted to study the icy waters.

The ship travelled east and stopped next to a large block of ice around 50 miles from the small island of Hopen. Marchenko prepared to lead his students out onto the ice.

"We were ready to go but when I went out, I discovered many cracks around," he remembers.

He decided to move the ship deeper into the ice to keep safe. The farther in they went, he thought, the harder the ice would become. As they pushed forward, however, the ship experienced small waves, and then bigger ones. Soon, the waves broke up the ice around the ship into thousands of smaller pieces.

Within an hour, Marchenko and his team saw a wave that was about 13 feet high. The ship's navigation system finally recorded the largest waves. They were more than 20 feet in height. The waves were so strong that they forced huge pieces of ice to jump up and down, breaking the ice into smaller pieces within just one hour. Scientists had never imagined that the process could happen so fast. The waves in these areas used to be small.

The speed and force of the huge waves there makes it impossible to know in advance when they are coming. That could be dangerous for navigators and local communities who are unprepared for huge waved or depend on sea ice to protect them. Wildlife like polar bears that depend on sea ice to live is also in danger.

Some scientists think people will soon see even bigger waves in icy waters. As waves break up ice, seas will be more open, waves will be stronger. There are stormy times ahead.

    1. (1) When did Marchenko and his students discover huge waves in the arctic waters?
    2. (2) What happened to the ice around the ship when the ship moved into the ice?
    3. (3) How high were the largest waves recorded by the navigation system?
    4. (4) What animals will be in danger because of the huge waves?
    5. (5) What will people see in these icy waters?

Exams are a fact of school life for most people. Almost everyone worries about them and feels stressed, although they have prepared well.

A little stress caused by the exams is useful as it can sharpen your mind and motivate(激发)you to do well. But too much stress can stop you working to the best of your abilities, so its important not to let it get out of control. Here are some ideas to help you.

The keys to being prepared for exams and avoiding unnecessary exam stress are knowing what you need to know, planning and preparing for your revision (复习), and giving yourself enough time to do it.

If you can, find a copy of the syllabus for each subject. This tells you what you need to know and gives you the topics for revision.

Make a week-by-week revision timetable chart to display in your work space. Include the topics you need to cover for each subject.

About 12 weeks before your first exam, record the dates and times for each of your exams in your planner or diary and make a copy to put on your wall at home.

During your exam period you want your brain to work at its very best, so build in relaxation time before bed, avoid late night revision sessions and try to go to bed early so you get enough sleep. If panic (惊慌) starts to creep in, try to replace your negative thoughts with more positive (积极的) ones, such as 'It's going to be OK? If you have difficulty answering a question, leave it and move on to the next one—don't spend time tying yourself in mental (思想上的) knots over each question.

You are not alone while dealing with the stress. Call psychological (心理的) hotline to share your worries and get help from others going through the same experience. Poverty (贫困) is a big problem around the world. But China has done a good job of dealing with it and it has found its own way to fight poverty. Instead of just giving money to poor people, it has tried to educate people and give them the tools they need to lift themselves out of poverty. Ordinary (平凡的) people play a big role in the fight. Here are two of them.

After graduating from Beijing Normal University in 2016, Huang Wenxiu gave up the chances to work in big cities and returned to her hometown of Baise in Guangxi and served as the village's Party chief. A total of 418 villagers were lifted out of poverty thanks to her efforts. Unluckily, she died in a flash flood at the age of 30 while driving back to her village in Baise. She was given the title "role model of the times" by the central government.

When Mao Xianglin started to work as the Party secretary of his village, there was only one pathway out of the village for many years. He led more than 100 villagers to build a road with their hands. It took them seven years to build an eight-kilometer road. Mao then encouraged the villagers to grow oranges. Last year, their orange yield (产量) was nearly 40 tons. Young people have returned to the village to sell oranges online. By the end of 2019, 269 villagers had been lifted out of poverty. The per capita income (人均收入) reached 12, 670 yuan, 40 times more than in the 1990s.

    1. (1) How does China help poor people to fight poverty?
    2. (2) What prize was given to Huang Wenxiu?
    3. (3) How do young people sell oranges in Mao Xianglin's village?
    4. (4) 请把文中的划线句子翻译成汉语。
    5. (5) 请给短文拟一个恰当的标题。
