At times my mom has been uncomfortable seeing these qualities in me. For example, when I was 12, I went to Puerto Rico all by myself to stay with my grandmother for the summer. My mom was very nervous (紧张的)about it. She kept telling me how things were different in Puerto Rico, to always put on sunglasses, not to walk away from my grandmother, and other warnings. She helped me pack and did not leave the airport until she saw my plane take off.
But despite(尽管)her worries, she let me go on my own. As I moved into my teens, she continued to give me space to grow and learn, even when it might have been difficult for her. When I reached my senior year, I decided to move away for college. Once again I found that I differed from my peers(同伴): While many of them wanted to close to home, I couldn't wait to be out in the world on my own. While my mom may not have been happy at the thought of my going away, she was supportive (支持的) and excited for me.
One big thing I realized during my senior year, as my mom allowed me more freedom, was that she actually believes in me and trusts me. That means a lot. Most of my life, and especially when I was little, the main person I tried to impress in my schoolwork or other things was my mother. I knew she expected nothing but the best from me. Sometimes it was hard to live up to her standards (标准); getting a single B on my report card would make her feel bad because I knew she wanted me to have all A's.
I know that her high standards have helped me stay focused (集中注意力的) on what is important , like education, and made me who I am. I am thankful for her support and involvement (参与) in my life. Most of all I respect her. She is the strongest woman I know and that's why I have turned out so strong and independent.
It will come as no comfort to a child shivering on a playing field on a cold winter's day. But regular organised school sport helps children in their academic studies in years to come. The researchers said other "structured" activities such as music or religious activities were not as beneficial for attention as taking part in a games lesson. The difference in academic ability was noticeable even at age ten, with those who had taken in sports since the start of junior school faring better than those who hadn't.
The Canadian study looked at children aged six and then ten. Professor Linda Pagani said:" We worked with information provided by parents and teachers to compare kindergarteners' activities with their classroom activities as they grew up. By the time they reached the fourth grade, kids who played structured sports were clearly better at following instructions and remaining focused in the classroom. There is something special to the sporting environment-perhaps the sense of belonging to a team to a special group with a common goal—that appears to help kids understand the importance of respecting the rules and honouring responsibilities. "
Researchers began studying 2, 694 Canadian children around the age of six, with teachers filled in questionnaires about their behaviour in school. Meanwhile, the children's parents were interviewed by phone or in person about their home life. The exercise was the repeated four years later to test what effect the behaviour had.
Professor Pagani said: "We found children who had better behaviour in the kindergarten class were more likely to be involved in sport by age ten. Nonetheless(虽然如此), we found those children who were specifically involved in team sports at kindergarten scored higher by the time they reached the fourth grade. "The researchers believe sporting activities and attention skills go hand in hand. Professor Pagani added:" The results should be encouraging for schools looking to cut childhood obesity rates and low attainment in schools. "
You may not realize it, but when you stare at your partner's eyes, there's a good chance that you're looking at a modified reflection of yourself? Researchers have found that people choose partners who tend to be of similar size, shape ,and race as themselves… and they may even have facial features in common.
Take Lot Geels from Amsterdam and her American husband, Brock Mosovsky, for example. "We have similar blonde hair and blue eyes," says Lot. "Neither of us is very tall. We're both built athletically and we're both mainly of European origin. "
Even if you't look like your partner, you likely share nonphysical characteristics, according to a growing field of research. Tike education level, socioeconomic status, religion, personality features, and even core (核心) values.
Lot andBrock fall into this type as well." We both have PhDs and work in research," she says. "We both live an active lifestyle, mainly rock climbing and skiing. Our world views are pretty similar, and we're both hard-working, social and friendly people.
Researchers have been studying the phenomenon of people with similarities pairing up known as positive assortative coupling一for decades. If you're sure that "opposites attract", you may be surprised by research findings, which prove that like attracts like. However, if you believe that "likes attract", you probably understand why people surprisingly seek life partners. who remind them, on some comforting level, of themselves.
"There's an element of predictability- when you date Somebody of a similar background," says Ty Tashiro, the author of The Science of Happily Ever After. "They're less threatening, less scary. They'll be more of a familiar person front the start. Familiarity is something we find attractive. "
You might have noticed how everyone is obsessed with their screen during family gatherings or bonding with friends. Disconnecting from devices might be challenging, but there are ways to spend time with your friends without using them. With the right activities you can connect more with them and have fun.
If you want to spend quality time with each other, you and your friends need to sacrifice your screen time. It could also be one of the house rules when you are together. However, everyone in the group must be willing to cooperate or else the purpose might be defeated.
By turning off your devices it would focus the atmosphere more on your bonding. Everyone could feel more welcomed and invited.
So what are the alternatives other than staring at the screen? Before the trend of high-tech devices a board game had always been the source of entertainment when a group of friends wanted to have some fun, Though they have digital versions you might not want to miss the opportunity to actually interact (互动) with your friends face to face.
Another helpful way to start a conversation with your friends is through playing question games. But don't worry. There are many different versions of question games you can search online, such as Never Have I Ever questions.
While it is important to enjoy your get-together, going into a purposeful conversation is also necessary. You don't know what your friends are going through, and making room for a heart-to-heart talk might be what they need.
A. It is better for you all to agree on this matter.
B. So why not bring these classic activities back?
C. You and your friends could attend more to each other.
D. Being interactive is the key in bonding with your friends.
E. Turning off your devices could be the first step you can do.
F. Entertainment isn't the only way to interact with your friends.
G. The main idea of this kind of game is to take turns in involvement.
