Students in high schools can be cruel and we certainly refer to a young man named Matt who was in my class. We laughed at him about his 1. He was at least fifty pounds overweight.
One day he sat near me in a 2. Someone pushed him and he fell on me and hurt my foot quite 3. With the whole class watching, I had to choose either to 4 it off or have a fight with him. I chose to fight in order to keep my 5.
I 6, "Come on, Matt, let's fight. " He said he didn't want to. But pressure forced him into the fight whether he liked it or not. He came7 me with his fists in the air. With one hit, I bloodied his nose and the classroom became 8. No one dared to say a word. Just then the teacher walked into the classroom, he saw that we were 9 and sent us out to the playground.
He followed 10with a smile on his face and said, "I want you two boys to go out there and run that mile holding each other's hands." The room broke into laughter. The two of us were shy, 11 Matt and I went out to the track and ran our mile—hand in hand.
During the course of our run, I looked at him, with blood still flowing from his nose and his 12slowing him down. It hurt me that here was a person, not all that different from myself. I no longer saw Matt as fat. We both 13each other and began to laugh. In time we became good friends.
It was amazing what I learned 14I was asked to go hand-in-hand with someone for only one mile. For the rest of my life I have never 15 a hand against another person. I know it is wrong to do so.
Opposite Day
Opposite Day is on January 24th each year. It is a strange but fun day. Whatever you say on this day must be the opposite of what you mean. If you say 'yes', you mean 'no'. Opposite Day can be a very useful day for students to get out vocabulary notebooks and find the opposites, to different words. Students could focus on prefixes that are used to give a word an opposite meaning, for example, 'un' in 'unhelpful' and 'unnecessary', or 'il' in illegal' and 'illogical'.
Inspire Your Heart With Art Day
January the 31st is Inspire Your Heart With Art Day. On this day, you can create your very own work of art or go and visit art museums. People should take the time to find out art and make it a bigger part of their lives. Art can change our way of looking at the world. Unluckily, many of us stop being creative when we move from childhood to adulthood. There is so much art around us but many people take little notice of it. There is so much art in the places we work, live and play in that we don't even have to step into an art museum.

①Facial recognition technology is widely used today. For example, police use it to search for bad guys. It's also used to unlock phones or doors. Now, a similar technology, known as facial detection (探测), is entering a new field: the business of advertising.
②Such systems are going through tests in a small number of stores. One facial detection system can judge a person's "happiness" or "fear" level. That helps businesses see how people feel as they look at products or advertisements in the store. Another system can detect whether someone is wearing eyeglasses. If so, stores can send advertisements for new glasses to him.
③Facial detection technology is also placed inside some large advertising boards. Cameras in those boards can detect information like people's ages and five levels of feelings-from "very happy" to "very unhappy".
④Supporters of the technology say it could improve buyers' experience by showing products they might like or by offering them products at lower prices.
⑤Some are against the idea of using such systems. Pam Dixon, the head of a privacy (隐 私) group, is one of them. She thinks______▲____. For example, a business could raise the price of a product according to a person's age and feelings.
⑥However, one store testing the technology explained they wouldn't store people's information like 'names or ages. And the advertising board system maker said it didn't keep any personal information or record any videos.
Top student Lin Yijian had a problem recently. The 14-ycar-old from Xiamen used to get marks of over 110 points (out of 120 possible points) on his math tests. But during last semester's final exams, his math score was only 90 points.
It was a shock. "I didn't know what happened," said Lin, who kept feeling nervous and disappointed about math during the following month.
Like Lin, many of us have difficulties in life. What would you do to deal with them? Would you just let them be and give up? Lin chose to face his problem. His parents and teacher also gave him help. After some hard work he now gets marks between 100 and 110 points on his math tests. Although it still isn't his best level,Lin doesn't panic (恐慌) any more. "Don't be afraid of setbacks," he said. "You will beat it."
Chen Xingzhu in Shenzhen also has a story to tell. The 15-year-old girl is not good at doing sit-ups,which is necessary for the high school PE entrance exam. One has to do at least 35 sit-ups in a minute to pass the test. Most of Chen's classmates can do 40. However, Chen could only do 20.
Feeling worried, Chen decided to do something. She did sit-ups for half an hour every day after school. Now, after a month, she can do 30 sit-ups a minute.
"I finally found what made me slow through continuous practice and then improved little by little," said Chen. "I believe next month I will be able to do 40!"
A new study finds that more than eighty percent of Internet users in the United States search for health information online.
Susannah Fox from the Pew Internet Project says doctors are still the main source of health information. But the study found that searching online is one of the leading ways that people look for a second opinion. He says, "People are short of factchecking what they have heard from a doctor. Our studies show that people are still very likely to turn to a health doctor when they need a diagnosis(诊断) or are planning a treatment. "
Forty-four percent of people are actually looking for doctors or other providers when they search for health information online. Two thirds of Internet users look online for information about a certain disease or medical condition.
The Internet has also become an important source of spiritual support for people with health problems. Susannah Fox says one in five Internet users has gone online to find other people who have the same condition.
A disease is considered uncommon if it affects(侵袭) fewer than 200, 000 people worldwide. The rise of social networking has made it easier for people with uncommon diseases to connect with each other and feel less alone. Social networking is also changing the way some doctors and patients communicate with each other.
Dr Jeff Livingston operates a medical centre for women in Irving, Texas. His office uses passwordprotected software to share information with patients.
