"I try when I can", said Alice.
"Alice, we5Mrs. Black for a long time. She has often helped our family. Now we can do 6for her. And the feeling you get from helping someone makes you wonder who is really helping who. "
"I don't know, Dad," said Alice. "The only feeling I get from mowing our yard is tired."
"Just wait and see," said Dad.

Once upon a time, there was a writer who had a house very close to the sea. Every morning, he went for a walk along the beach — it helped him to relax, to get ready for his working day, and to get ideas.
One beautiful sunny morning, as he was walking near the edge(边缘)of the water, he looked along the beach and in the distance he saw a little girl near the water. She was bending down and then standing up — he wasn't sure what she was doing. So he decided to go closer to find out.
When he got near to the little girl, he saw that on the beach there were lots of starfish, and the little girl was picking them up, one at a time, and throwing them into the water.
The writer went closer to the girl and asked her what she was doing. The girl stopped and looked up at the writer — she seemed surprised. Then she said that she was throwing the starfish back into the sea. She said, "The sun is up, and the tide(潮) is going out. If I don't throw the starfish back into the water, they will die. "
Now it was the writer who was surprised. He wanted to persuade her that she was wasting her time. He said, "But look, there are hundreds of starfish here. You can't possibly pick them all up and throw them back. It's not worth it. Can't you see that you can't possibly make a difference here"
The girl smiled, bent down and picked up yet another starfish, and as she threw it back into the sea, she replied, "If I hadn't thrown it back, it would have died. I think I made a difference to that one. "
A new study out of Canada suggests teenagers should spend less time looking at screens and more time joining in activities. The findings were based on a survey of 28,000, 7th graders in British Columbia. They answered the questions about how much time they spent watching TV and playing video games, and how much time they spent on outdoor activities like sports and music programs. Then they ranked how good they felt about each day when they woke up. From their answers, researchers said that teenagers who spent more time on activities were mentally healthier and less worried and upset than those who spent more time with screens.
▲ For them, researchers say the negative(消极的) effects were stronger. So how much screen time is too much? The Canadian Pediatric Society says all teenagers should have less than two hours of screen time per day. But it's important to point out that the information for it was gathered between 2014 and 2018, years before the coronavirus pandemic (新冠疫情) hit.
This year, with fewer chances to see friends and join in activities, teenagers have shown higher levels of depression (抑郁) and worries according to another research. The lead author of the Canadian study says even though it's harder to do, it's still important to find ways for teens to safely have programs and hobbies that are away from screens.
Cosmetics (化妆品) are commonly used by women nowadays. But what did Chinese women use in ancient times?
Over the past several years, Wang Yifan, 29, has restored (复原) more than 30 kinds of cosmetics and tools from different dynasties (朝代). Wang has taken interest in the cosmetics since she was a child.
The restoration process of cosmetics includes the following steps: making clear what the ingredients (成分) are, doing experiments (实验), comparing the test results and correcting mistakes if there are any problems. In her eyes, every step is a challenge. But finding the right ingredients is the most difficult part. Sometimes, the same ingredient might have different names during different periods.
Although the process is hard and takes plenty of time, Wang finds it worth the efforts. "Restoring cosmetics offers another way for people to learn Chinese history and know more about our nation," Wang said.
Wang Yifan is not the only one that takes actions to spread the Chinese culture. Wang Ping connects his job with it, too. Wang Ping became interested in making Chinese headdresses (头冠) in 2020. He uses different kinds of materials. Surprisingly, almost most of them are "waste" as they come from clothes that are not worn anymore. "I'm trying to make the headdresses in an environmentally friendly way. "Wang said.
One of his most popular works is Chinese phoenix coronets (凤冠) which take from one week to up to a few months because it uses over 30 kinds of materials. The process of making one is a long journey, requiring careful check and putting every piece into the right position.
So, would you like to learn about Chinese cultures through ancient cosmetics or pretty headdresses?
①Facial-recognition (人脸识别) cameras are everywhere, even in your smartphone. Many people use this technology to unlock their phones, open doors, or make quick payments. But during the pandemic (疫情), can it still work when people put on masks?
②The answer is no. Scientists are trying to solve this problem. For example, Engineering & Technology (E&T) magazine reports that Hanwang, a tech company in Beijing, has made a new system (系统). It can recognize 95 percent of people when they wear masks.
③What's the secret? It's all about your eyes.
④Marios Savides from Carnegie Mellon University, US, studies facial recognition. As we get older, he says, our faces change shape. But the area around our eyes doesn't. It stays the same - even if we put on weight. As long as there are enough data (数据) from the area of our eyes, the cameras can recognize us.
⑤Tech 5 is another facial-recognition company. The Swiss company's product scans (扫描) the shape of your face. It also scans your iris (虹膜), which is the colored part of your eyes. Tech 5 hopes to leave out(忽略) all of the face below the nose.
⑥This kind of software is more important than just unlocking your phone. "It can search for criminals (罪犯) and terrorists (恐怖分子) even when they wear masks," said Huang-Lei from Hanwang. Hanwang's technology is used by Chinese police in places like subway stations and airports. Similar technology is used by the United States Air Force.
⑦Huang pointed out one big weakness: it fails when people wear both a mask and sunglasses." In this situation, all of the key facial information is lost, "Lei said to E&T.
