A lot of children do volunteer activities in their free time. They set a(an)1for us.
Lisa is a middle school student from England. Although she is busy with her lessons every day, she helps to2 the streets in her neighborhood. She says she has a strong3of satisfaction after volunteering. Lisa's mother is good at making blankets(毛毯). Lisa has a great4in it, so she asks her mother to5 her in her free time. About two weeks later, Lisa can make blankets by6 . She plans to make some for homeless people.
Frank is a boy from Canada. He joined a special club. In the club, children make shoes for poor kids in Uganda(乌干达). They7they will make a big difference to the kids' life. Frank also likes8 things. On weekends, he repairs the9things for people in his neighborhood. Some disabled people have10moving around, so he goes to their houses to help them.
What helpful volunteers Lisa and Frank are!
Everybody will have some health problems. Here are Mr. Black's problems and his doctor's advice. I hope they can help you.
Mr. Black's problems My name is David Black. I live in a small house. I never go out when the weather is cold or hot, because I am worried I'll have a cold. I don't go out often because I don't want to talk with others. I hardly exercise, but sometimes I take a walk in my garden. After I walk for a few minutes, I have to take a rest. I am always very weak and tired. I often have a headache, but I don't want to see a doctor. What should I do? |
Dr. Smith's advice Traditional Chinese doctors believe we need a balance(平衡) of yin and yang to be healthy. I think you have too much yin because you are always worried about something and you don't like going out or talking with others. I think you should eat some yang foods, like beef and you need to exercise more. Also, talking with others can make you feel relaxed. And if you don't feel very well, it's important for you to go to see a doctor. And you will feel better after you take some Chinese medicine. |
Tuesday, Jan. 6, 9:50 p. m.
We were sitting in our warm living room. The TV was on, and everything was peaceful. Suddenly the light went on and off for a few times and then went out completely. Then the rain started, and everything went black. We found the flashlight and some candles and went to bed.
Wednesday, Jan. 7, 7:30 a. m.
My first thought after waking up was that it was pretty cold in my bedroom. Clearly, the power (电力供应) didn't come back. After I looked out of the window, I felt even sadder: it was still raining heavily. The room was becoming colder and colder. We had no idea when the power would come back, so my wife started a fire in the fireplace.
Thursday, Jan. 8, 12:30 p. m.
The snow started. The poor trees now had to carry the heavy snow. The storm seemed to last (持续) and we had nothing to do but stay at home.
Friday, Jan. 9, 6:00 p. m.
Still no power. Even though we lit (点燃) a few candles, it was still difficult to do anything in their weak light. I was sitting near several candles, but I had trouble reading.
Saturday, Jan. 10, 1:00 p. m.
The storm stopped this morning, and I drove my car to look for an open store. The trees along the roads were broken. I only bought the most necessary things:bread, some fruit, more drinking water and batteries (电池) for the flashlight. On my way home, the power came back and people were very happy.
One of my least favorite chores is cleaning my bedroom, but I have to do it. If my bedroom is untidy, I find it hard to relax and impossible to do any work! My mom always says" a tidy home means a tidy mind", and I think this is true. If everything is a mess, you just can't think clearly.
Studies show that people are usually more successful if they work, study, or live in a clean and tidy environment. A study showed that a high percentage (百分率) of children with bad behavior (行为, 举止) come from messy houses. Children who grow up in dirty houses tend to be unhealthy and they fall sick more often too. This is why people with tidier homes are often healthier and more successful. My mom is a good example of this. She makes sure our home is always very clean and comfortable, so my sister and I hardly ever fall sick. Everyone loves her and she is very successful at her job in a bank.
I am not a naturally (天生的) tidy person. I sometimes throw my clothes on the floor because I am too tired to put them away, and I often leave rubbish on my desk. It is not easy to keep things clean all the time, but I am trying to develop the habit of tidying up every day. Maybe one day I will be as tidy and successful as my mom!
Parents sometimes argue with each other about things — that's just a fact of life.
Most teenagers feel sad or afraid when their parents argue. They might think their parents don't love each other any more and that their arguments will lead to a divorce (导致离婚). In fact, occasional (偶尔的) arguments are a sign of a healthy relationship.
①对于父母亲来讲有时候争吵或者不同意是正常的。They might disagree about important things like jobs and family decisions. They might even disagree about little things that don't seem important at all—like what's for dinner. These arguments are often over quickly. Parents may say sorry and make up, and the family returns to normal.
However, it can be stressful or even scary when your parents argue. Sometimes you might find it hard to sleep or go to school. If you really feel sad about this, talk to them about it. ②Don't talk to your parents while they are arguing. You can wait until after an argument and try to talk to them together. Explain how their fighting makes you feel.
One important thing for teenagers:If you ever see the arguments between your parents turn violent (暴力), don't be afraid. And ask your teacher or another adult you trust for help. They will know what to do. |

Students spend more time at school than anywhere else. At school, children need a safe and comfortable environment to help them learn. By doing the followings, parents can make sure that children have a good school experience.
◆Talk to your children about their day. Sometimes children won't tell you right away if they have problems at school. Ask your children if they see anyone bullied(被欺负), if they are bullied, or if anything else makes them feel uncomfortable. Look for warning (警示) signs, such as a sudden drop in grades or loss of friends. Try to help them out as soon as possible.
◆Teach children what to do at school. Tell your children a safe way for them to walk to school or to the bus stop. Ask children to follow traffic signals (信号)and rules when walking or biking. Teach children not to talk to strangers. If they see a stranger hanging around or in their school, they should tell an adult. Teach children to solve problems without fighting. Explain that fighting could lead to them getting hurt, or hurting someone else. Tell them other ways they can work out a problem, such as walking away or telling a trusted adult.
◆Keep an eye on your children's Internet use. Talk to your children about what they do online—what sites they visit, who they email, and who they chat with. Let them know they can talk to you if anything they see online makes them uncomfortable.
