Monami Ohno uses a little tool to put very small pieces of hard paper, or cardboard, on the legs of her sculpture. The Japanese artist is creating a representation of Godzilla, the huge and terrifying animal of the famous Japanese movie.
Ohno has used cardboard to create artwork for about ten years. She says she first used the material to make what she called a "bike-like thing" for a college project. The 29-year-oldmakes many works of art based on popular culture, like anime robots, warplanes and fast food.
Ohno recently described her first experience with cardboard art to the Reuters news agency. She used the term "folding", or turning one part of the cardboard over or against another part. "When 1 first tried folding the paper, gluing and putting them together, the people around me praised me, saying things like Wow, you can make this, '"she said. "That made me so happy that I have continued doing this until now."
Ohno's complex sculptures have since become popular, with her work appearing at public showings in Japan and overseas. Ohno does not use an exact plan when she makes her art. She expresses her ideas briefly on the cardboard first. This provides general measurements of the design. She can then cut and shape her sculpture. In a room filled with her creations, including a Lego Batman artwork, Ohno said, "I make the things I really like to decorate my house."
Ohno's press agent said the artist's pieces are selling for $ 900 to $ 13, 000 a piece. Ohno said she is not making an environmental statement with her art, although it is made with used cardboard only. However, she added, "It would be nice if people can see my work, which is made out of cardboard and recycled materials rather than plastics, and realize that there are these kinds of people who are involved in recycling."
At most universities, core(核心) curriculum or general education is required, whether that is two or more courses in core academic subjects. These core academics consist of mathematics, science, history and English, which are used to provide students with a broad range of academic knowledge and aid in their individual development.
However, are these courses more beneficial or harmful to students? Based on studies from across the district there is a gap between the necessities and burdens of general education courses. According to an article by Best Value Schools, students sometimes discover a hidden passion for a field of study while taking general education courses. Although this may be true, many students consider the program as "a collection of courses without connection, consistency or meaning"". The negative concept of these courses could possibly be connected to the fact that many students don't actually obtain these skills.
Many schools have been working to improve their core curriculum program by developing the adoption of mission, goal and outcome statements. Some University of North Carolina at Greensboro(UNCG) professors have recently been requiring students to take self-assessments and complete assignments based on how to develop critical thinking, communication and cooperation skills, as well as apply them within and outside of the classroom. It is through these channels of self-discovery that students can often find their passions, which can possibly lead to choosing a major.
Typically, one-third of first-time college students change their major within the first three years. Major changes can be for a variety of reasons. It can be associated with a dissatisfaction in coursework. It can also be due to the discovery of a major which simply fits a student better. General education classes can play an important role in helping to make this discovery. Though students' opinions vary on the importance of core curriculum, the basis of the program should be taken into consideration. At the same time, institutions should continue to work towards developing more authentic ways to provide a sense of importance and pride in the program to aid in student learning and the development of real-world skills.
We may wish some memories could last a lifetime, but many physical and emotional factors can negatively impact our ability to keep information throughout life.
A new study published in the journal Psychological Science found that people who feel enthusiastic and cheerful, which is called "positive affect" by psychologists, are less likely to experience memory declines as they age. This adds to more and more research on positive affect's role in healthy aging.
A team of researchers analyzed data from 991 middle-aged and older adults who participated in a national study conducted at three time periods: between 1995 and 1996, 2004 and2006, and 2013 and 2014.
In each period, participants reported on a range of positive emotions they had experienced during the past 30 days. In the final two periods, participants also completed tests of memory performance. These tests included recalling words immediately after their presentation and again 15 minutes later.
The researchers examined the association between positive affect and memory decline, taking account of age, gender, education, and depression.
"Our findings showed that memory declines with age, "said Claudia Haase, an associate professor at Northwestern University. "However, individuals with higher levels of positive affect had a less steep memory decline over the course of almost a decade, "added Emily Hittner, a PhD graduate of Northwestern University.
Areas of future research might address the pathways that could connect positive affect and memory, such as physical health or social relationships.
Ecards are becoming a popular way to send greetings to others, on major holidays, birth-days, and just whenever the mood strikes. A trend occurring in the 2000s was to send cards through email that featured animation on the card and also had music. But now there's much more range to choose from.
Early musical ecards tended to feature songs that usually weren't that recognizable.People can find sites that offer cards featuring popular modern songs or they may pick from styles like county and western, rhythm and blues, rock, and many others.
There are some very special musical ecards that feature different kinds of music that isn't particularly well-known. Alternately, people choosing cards could send other tunes from across the world that are inspired by regional music traditions.
Some musical ecards do cost a small amount of money to send. For instance, a few companies offer orchestral music from famous orchestras and donate money of card sales to charities benefiting local music programs for kids. Other sites simply profit from selling cards, and there are many sites that offer free musical ecards.
Since the early 2000s, ecards have occasionally been used to collect personal information or spread viruses. People receiving an ecard should type in the company website instead of clicking on links, which might take the user to a fake website instead Besides, make certain not to give out personal information like address or phone number when receiving a card.
A. You don't have to spend a fortune to send an ecard.
B. There are some cautions regarding using ecard sites.
C. Today's choices of accompanying music are varied.
D. Ecards have become very popular over the past few years.
E. Such music included things like traditional birthday songs.
F. For example, a musical ecard could have samples of Native American music.
G. Depending upon the company creating the card, the money might be donated.
As a PhD student, I went through many difficulties in my research. When I graduated, I wasn't willing to1so many hours away from my young children with so little to show for it. Instead, I accepted my love of teaching by working as a2.
A decade later and with my kids in school, my scientific3came out of hibernation(冬眠)and I4a position at a new arts college. In my undergraduate classes, I asked my students to complete controlled experiments that were5guaranteed to produce reasonable data. But after a few years, I grew6with the gap between those perfect experiments and my own research projects.
I decided to 7a new course that would give our students experience performing8experiments, ones that had the potential to fail. Then after a solid hour of struggle and some leading questions on my part, one student finally9, "It doesn't make10. "Hallelujah! One of them had stepped back from seeing what they expected to see and described what the data11 showed. The breakthrough helped the classmates start to look at the results with more 12eyes. Within minutes, they were overflowing with questions and13 about what could have gone wrong. My students were thinking like scientists.
Research is 14 and full of failed attempts. Trying to protect students from that reality does harm to them. I hope my students will bring an15with them that success doesn't always come easy.

Every year there are about 110 million visitors to the parks, (bring) many bene-fits to the areas. At the same time, it creates problems too. First, life can be difficult for local people. Car parks and roads are too (crowd). Even house prices in some areas can be-come too high. Besides, country roads can be damaged, for too many people walk, cycle or ride horses on them. Roads can (rebuild), but then they look (little) natural Another big problem to the National P arks is litter. In the parks it is a danger to wild animals. (break) glass can also cause fires by focusing the rays ofsun. Such fires in wild places can be out of control.

Dear Peter,
I'd like to ask you to write an article for our school's English newspaper.
……
I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours,

One hot July afternoon in central Arkansas, I was working on an important project in my home office with a dear friend and colleague. My trusty printer was printing a time sensitive report when it simply stopped. After fifteen minutes of trying to repair, I decided to buy a new printer. Upon our return, my heart froze to see my house on fire.
Despite having spent much of my life writing, I was still lost for adequate words to de-scribe the sick, sinking feeling of seeing my home, business and belongings going up in flames along with photographs and memories collected over a lifetime. But the panic that filled my shocked heart in that awful moment was for the nine cats that shared my home after being res-cued from situations of abuse and abandonment.
Responding to an early security system warning, the firefighters arrived in record time, but the chemical-laden smoke had already caused deaths. I examined and kissed each cat good-bye, extremely grateful that they had passed gently, without injuries or burns. Only animal lovers really understand the unbelievable impact that the loss of one beloved four-legged family member can have on your soul. The loss of so many dearly loved creatures made me sad.
After staying with another great friend for a couple of weeks, 1 was relocated to a furnished apartment. One evening, about a month after moving in, I was occupied in writing a mystery novel when a "meow" sounded from outside the door. Was it my mind playing tricks again? More than once I had heard, seen or felt the brush of one of my departed furry room-mates. The meow grew louder and more insistent. Curious, 1 opened the door, Sitting on the doorstep was a small cat with big eyes. A neighbour walking by picked him up and began petting him. When I remarked how cute her kitten was, she explained that he had been born under a bridge and looked around for food.
