For many years, no one could communicate with people who had been born without hearing. These deaf people were not able to use a spoken language.
But, beginning in the 1700s, the deaf were taught a special language. Using this language, they could share thoughts and ideas with others. The language they used was a language without sound. It was a sign language.
How did this sign language work? The deaf were taught to make certain movements using their hands, faces, and bodies. These movements stood for things and ideas. People might move their forefingers across their lips. This meant, "You are not telling the truth." They might tap their chins with three fingers. This meant "my uncle."
The deaf were also taught to use a finger alphabet. They used their fingers to make the letters of the alphabet. In this way, they spelled out words. Some deaf people could spell out words at a speed of 130 words per minute.
Sign language and finger spelling are not used as much as they once were. Today, the deaf are taught to understand others by watching their lips. They are also taught how to speak.

Sri Lanka - Alison Hanko, Global Marketing Director
I'm going to Sri Lanka this summer holiday and can't wait. It's close to Hong Kong where I live and I've always wanted to go. The food is supposed to be amazing. It seems really relaxing and I really want to do the Kandy to Badulla train ride, which looks just stunning. We've booked a good mix of beaches, some time in a safari tent to hopefully see elephants in the wild.
For my bag, I'll most likely take the Quiksilver 40L Pack because it has the built-in wet pack for my bikinis. It's also a great size for a week-long trip in a warm climate.
Japan - Ben Barras, Creative Director
Japan is definitely my best travel destination recommendation. The culture, the streets, the architecture, the inspiration you get from all of that is amazing. The food is also fascinating. It's where I'm most planning to go. Tokyo obviously, but also visiting the mountains. You can go snowboarding, which I haven't done for years.
I have a Vibe 25L Backpack which you can pack a lot in. The thing I like most about it is that it's compact, but still fits plenty in. I'll pair that up with a larger travel bag for the rest of my things and use the backpack to get around day to day.
Berlin - Phil Hayes, Executive VP of Global Design
For me, it's definitely Berlin. I'm particularly excited about the fashion, which I hear is pretty full on. Also the art galleries and history. Food, nightlife. Everything I've heard about Berlin is pretty cool, so I'm going to suck as much as I can out of it. World's Global Style Network had the Berlin shopping list that came out recently, so I'm going to follow that through as well.
Bag wise, it will be the Quiksilver X Collab Bag. It's the 25L Anti-theft Backpack. It's normally my go-to bag for city trips because it's super easy to lock on the plane and in bars, and it's just the right amount of space.
Of the 20,000 people we surveyed for our recent sleep snapshot, just 12 per cent said they woke up feeling refreshed and 75 per cent said they had trouble falling asleep at least some of the time. Since you're going to spend a third of your life sleeping, it's worth developing some healthy habits.
It's important to set aside enough time to get adequate sleep each night. On average, adults need eight hours to feel properly rested. Some require slightly less while others require a little more—it's best to listen to your own body. Unless you have long sleep requirements, you should limit your time in bed to no more than 8.5 hours.
Going to bed and getting up at about the same time each day is one of the best ways to set your internal body clock's sleep-wake rhythm. Choose a wake-up time that works for you and aim to get up within 30 minutes of that time, seven days a week. According to sleep experts, you should avoid sleeping in, even if you have had a poor night's sleep. The extra sleep drive will help you sleep better the following night, and sleeping in late can actually disturb your body clock.
Ease the process from wake-up time to sleep time by gently winding down with a period of relaxing a activities an hour or so before bed. Keep away from blue screens, vigorous exercise, doing work or discussing emotional problems. Instead, try to listen to music, read a book or take a bath. This can help you avoid stressful thoughts when your head hits the pillow.
Your bedroom should be quiet, dark, comfortable and slightly cool. Avoid using computers, mobile phones or watching television in bed, and remove any physical reminders of work that might increase stressful thoughts. To strengthen the association your brain makes between being in bed and being asleep, limit your bedroom activities to sleep.
While anyone can enter the 189-foot Cinderella's Castle at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida to shop or eat, Disney allows only a very lucky few to stay overnight in its Cinderella Suite, which sits at the top of the clock tower.
If you've ever wondered what it feels like to be a Disney Princess, CNBC Make It got a first look with "The Bucket List Family". Garrett and Jessica Gee and their two young children, 5-year-old daughter, Dorothy, and 3-year-old son, Manilla, slept in Cinderella's quarters for the night. They were guests of Disney as part of their "30 stays in 30 days" blogging series. Here's a look inside.
To get into the suite, you open a large wooden door on the ground floor of the castle and enter a Gothic-style room where a 24-hour concierge (看门人) is there to attend to any needs you may have. You're then accompanied into a small elevator that resembles the pumpkin coach Cinderella took to the ball. It opens directly into the suite.
Walking into the suite feels like you're walking into a real castle. In the bedroom area, the two beds have carved wood frames and are made up with rich-looking linen. Stained glass windows tell a visual story of Cinderella's journey from an unloved maid to a princess. "Depending on the window, you could look out and see Fantasyland or Main Street," Jessica says. "It was fun waking up in the morning and seeing people coming into the park." Behind a glass case are Cinderella's glass slippers and her crown. Even the bathroom is fit for a princess. Two additional guests can sleep in the living room, which includes a "magic TV" that functions as both a mirror and an entertainment system. In a box behind the couch is a telescope so you can look out and see the different Disney characters walking through the park below. "Our favorite part", Jessica tells CNBC Make It, "was watching the firework show in front of the castle and then when it was over, walking right into the castle up to the suite for the night."
But don't reach for your credit card just yet. The suite, which offers guests a chance to stay in the center of Magic Kingdom, is by invitation only. Reportedly, Disney has turned down large sums from people eager to stay. When asked to describe the overall experience, Jessica, a lifelong Disney fan, says it was amazing.
We have all heard how time is more valuable than money, but is it possible to have too much?
I 1 back in high school I spent most of my day at school since I also 2 a team sport. By the time I got home, I only had a few hours to do my homework, and I had to do it 3.
When I got into college, things 4. I suddenly found myself out of class before noon time. There was no sense of 5 to do my school work immediately. I was performing this action of waiting until it later became 6. Once that happened, I just kept pushing my studying further and further back in my day. Then I got to the point where I was 7 really late at night to get my work alone.
One day I 8 a former classmate of mine who was 9 a lot of money running a sideline (副业). Since his regular job was 10, I asked him why he just didn't do his sideline full-time. He said without the job, he would simply have too much time and would just do what I did back in 11. He said that if he 12 the job, he would lose his 13 to work and succeed.
So, try 14 your time with other work. This is why there is a saying that if you want something done, ask a 15 person to do it.
I experienced years of loneliness as a child. His friends teased him about babysitting his sister and his interests were far different from mine. With no other kids of my age in the neighborhood, I had to spend hours by myself.
A bright spot for me turned out to be reading. My love of the written word began early as my mother read to me every evening. I started reading books on my own before age 5 and my mother took me to the public library once a week to borrow several books. I quickly graduated from typical children's books to ones with fewer pictures and longer chapters. Reading opened new worlds to me.
My mother also encouraged me to make what I wanted. I tried making toy cars with cardboard boxes and constructing buildings from leftover cardboard and bits of wood my father gave me. When my mother saw my creations, she told me how creative my designs were. I learned a lot about how to extend the life of objects and transform them into something new and useful. It was a trait(特点) others found helpful, and I soon had friends who wanted to make things with me.
My parents made it a point for their two kids to spend time outside, no matter the weather or season. My brother, of course, raced off to be with his friends, while I had plenty to do myself. There was making leaf houses in autumn, ice skating in winter, and so much more. They're all memories I treasure today.
A. I wasn't alone any longer.
B. I enjoyed reading stories aloud.
C. I was invited to play with another kid.
D. I loved the colorful photographs in the books.
E. Another habit I formed early was being outdoors.
F. Thus, I began my lifelong interest in making things.
G. My older brother couldn't be bothered to play with me.
