During those years, I used to compare my mom with my best friend Kayla's mom.
Kayla's mom always gave her lots of money to buy the most fashionable1and favorite food. Her mom allowed her to do anything she liked. I really2Kayla. My mom didn't give me much pocket money3she always told me that I should behave myself. I was really4and we didn't talk with each other for days.
Whenever I didn't get what I wanted, I would complain to my mom, "Kayla's mom would give her that! How I wish she were my mom. " Every time, my mom would calmly say"5Kayla". I couldn't understand her. "She shouldn't be feeling sorry for Kayla!" I thought. "She should be feeling sorry for6. "
One day, I couldn't help7to Mom, "Poor Kayla? Lucky Kayla! She gets everything she wants! Why do you feel sorry for her?" I cried sadly.
My mom sat down next to me and said8, "Yes, I do feel sorry for her. I have been teaching you a(n)9that she will never be taught. "
I looked up at her. "What are you talking about?"
Mom said with care, "One day she will really10something. Maybe she'll find out that she can't have it. Her mother won't always be11to give her money, and what's more, money can't buy everything. "
She 12, "I have taught you important lessons by not giving you everything you want. You'll know how to look for bargains(便宜货)and13money, but she won't. You'll understand that you need to work hard to get the things that you want but she won't. When Kayla is a grown woman, she'll14one day and she will be wishing that she had a mom like the one you've got. Life lessons are more valuable than modern clothes and delicious food. "
It took some time, but I 15understood my mom's words. Now I am a happy and well-behaved Grade Nice girl student.
Think of space! What comes to mind? No, I'm sot talking about planets or aliens. I'm talking about the space we live inl The world is full of different places. We can think about spaces in three different ways:public spaces, private spaccs and personal spaces.
PUBLIC SPACE Public spaces are social spaces for everyone to get together. They belong to everyone. But wait! Before you camp in your local park or throw a party at a library, remember that there are rules. The rules are set to keep these spaces clean and safe. |
PRIVATE SPACE A private space is for our own. We all need a space like homes, where we can relax and stay alone. We are not allowed to enter a private space freely. |
PERSONAL SPACE This is the space where we sit and stand. Everyone feels different about their personal spaces. People may feel uncomfortable or angry when someone they don't know gets too close. |
We should respect(尊重)all spaces. We should respect public places. We can't leave a mess or take anything that doesn't belong to us. It's important to leave no trace(痕迹) in public spaces. We should respect private spaces by asking for permission(允许)before entering. And we should respect personal spaces by finding out how much space a friend or classmate needs to feel comfortable. Respecting all spaces helps make us better people. It also helps keep our community safe and fun.
One day years ago, I finally managed to ask my parents to buy me a new football shirt for the school match. I was very excited and wore it to the training before the match, but I wished I hadn't done that! My new shirt was torn(破损的)after the training and only a tailor(裁缝)could help.
As I walked home worriedly, I saw a shop sign:All kinds of Repairs and Services! I went inside at once. I looked around the shop and saw broken toys, broken chairs...I wondered if I was in the wrong place. Just at that moment, a man with white hair came up to me and said cheerfully, "Welcome! This is a repair shop and I can repair everything!"
"But. . , what I need is a tailor to do with my football shirt. "
"You've come to the right place. I've been waiting a long, long time to repair a football shirt. "
"Really?" I held the shirt in my hands.
To my surprise, he took the shirt from me, put on glasses and sat down on the sofa with my shirt in his hands. "I guess you are a striker(前锋),"he smiled warmly. How could he know? The man gave me a wink and said calmly, "See that picture on the wall? That was me 30 years ago. "
I couldn't believe my eyes! He was Orhan, the famous footballer who was on the city team years ago! I told him I was playing for the school team and I had been his fan for years. I told him everything, my dream, my practice and even my dad's words. "Dad thinks I should be an engineer or a doctor. "I lowered my head.
"Follow your dream, choose a job you love and carry on. " The man smiled at me with his blue eyes. He patted me on the shoulder and put the shirt he had repaired in my bag.
Today I have become a footballer and I still keep that shirt in my closet.
It is a pity that deaf people, or those who have hearing problems, can't enjoy music. But now a vibrating suit(振动的套装)brings them hope-it can allow them to "feel" music through their body, rather than hear it.
The special suit is able to change music into some vibrating pulses(节拍). And the users can choose different levels.
Chase Burton, 33, a deaf film-maker from Texas, US, has been testing out the suit for four years. He understands that a deaf person's experience with music is very different. "When I was a kid, I'd lie on the floor so I could feel the vibrations from my brother's music playing. " Burton told CNN. Now when he wears the vibrating suit, he says the sound hits different parts of his body. "Maybe it will shake me strongly in my knees first. And then I'll start tofeel the vibrations in my back. And then I'll feel some pulsations. "Burton said.
The designers have been working on helping a large number of deaf people to have a chance of a musical experience. In 2016, some prototype suits were tested at a Lady Gaga concert in the US. The suit was also tested at a different concert in Las Vegas in 2019. It was given to 150 audiences(听众)at the concert, where half the audience members were deaf and half could hear. At the same time, the company has been improving the technology and planned to put it into the market soon. And the final goal of the company is to make the technology available to all.
"We truly think anything that has an audio element(元素)can also have a vibrational experience connected with it as well. "The company's talent and business development director, Jordan Richardson, told CNN.
Just the other day, I was in a bookstore and found a book named How to make friends with foreigners. As a Canadian living in China for a year, I was curious to see what kind of advice a Chinese writer was giving on this matter.
One piece of advice really caught my attention and, I must say, made me feel quite angry. In the writer's opinion, foreigners are an "Opportunity(机会)"to improve your spoken English; whenever you see a foreigner, American or English, you should practice speaking English with him or her. If the foreigner doesn't want to answer your questions, then he or she is an impolite person who you needn't spend time with anyway. I think this advice is not only incorrect, but also may harm the relationship between Chinese and foreigners in China.
Like most other "Lao Wai" living in China , I know how lonely one can sometimes fee1 living in a culture different from our own familiar(熟悉的) ways. However,I simply accept as part of being here. So far my time in China has been rewarding. I have improved my Chinese language skills, learned about one of the fastest developing countries in the world today and made some very close Chinese friends.
However, I have also met many Chinese people who consider me only as an "Opportunity"to improve their spoken English. I have had people following me from town to my flat to trouble me to teach them English. I have had complete strangers throwing articles or speeches in my face, insisting that I help them with the English translation. I have had people asking me non-stop questions for half an hour at the weekly English Corner...
Friendship for a lot of foreigners is about spending time with someone whose company(陪伴) they really enjoy. So ifthere is any advice to give on making and keeping friendships with foreigners, I would say that it is this: Treat foreigners as people, not opportunities. Expect to make friendships step by step, over a period of time, not in a hurry. If your only reason for becoming friends with a foreigner is to improve your English, then you will probably find that you don't have a foreign friend for long.

Dear Lura,
How is it going?
Do you still remember my best friend Jerry? When I met him, he was very young. But now he's grown up and has changed a lot. OK, now please listen to the general introduction about his changes.
Jerry used to be (沉默的),but he didn't get along well with others. He was afraid of meeting strangers and
(很少;不常)talked with them. He was not good at all subjects. He used to hate school. He was even(缺席的)from school from time to time. And sometimes he caused lots of troubles. But now he doesn't fight with other students. Instead, he always helps others. And he also(敢于)to give a speech in public. My friend is so great now that I take(自豪)in him.
And one more thing is that I am really satisfied with my new house. First, the environment is pretty good. Every day I can take a walk in a large garden. It is just(在······旁边)my house. There is even a fountain(喷泉)in the(中央的)part of the garden. Most importantly, there is a parking lot three hundred meters to the(东方)of my new house. So it is quite(方便的) for me to park my car.And my company is only10 minutes' walk from my new house, so I often go to work on foot and I don't need to(仓促)to my office anymore.
I know you finished your art course last month. I'm wondering if you're free this Saturday. I'm looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Michael
