If social distancing is driving you a little crazy, here are four world's most beautiful natural pools for you to get relaxed.
Devil's Pool
Victoria Falls in southeastern Africa measures 108 metres tall and more than 1676 metres wide. But for some brave people, the top of the Falls, known as Devil's Pool, is just another swimming hole. With water levels at their lowest from September to December, large numbers of swimmers adventure into the pool.
Barton Springs Pool
Barton Springs Pool in Austin, U. S. , covers three acres and maintains a temperature of about 20 degrees year-round. Admission to the 5-metre deep pool ranges from midMarch until the end of September. For local residents (居民),the cost is $ 3 for adults and $ 1 for kids under 8 (non-residents pay $ 8 for adults and $ 3 for kids under 8).
Bondi Icebergs Public Pool
A 15-minute drive from Sydney's CBD sits the Bondi Baths at Bondi Icebergs. The historic 50-metre public saltwater pool has been around for more than a century and features a small beach, where you can enjoy the sunshine. The entrance cost ( $ 7 for adults; $ 5 for kids) isn't much considering the million-dollar view.
Dudu Blue Lagoon
Want to float (漂浮) in a quiet 30-metre-deep freshwater pool? Then check out Dudu Blue Lagoon on the northeastern coast of the Dominican Republic. The lagoon also features underwater caves, making it a popular diving destination.
In some areas of India, only about 30 % of the women can read and write. Most girls have to leave school to help support the family. Women are not permitted to interact with men lawyers, be taught by men teachers or get treated by men doctors.
An organization called Selfie with Daughter Foundation is leading the campaign to educate women in these areas. Its aim is to bring change by publicizing the success stories of some young women who made it to college and now serve as role models for other families. The young women go from house to house to share their own experiences to persuade parents to keep their daughters at school.
Rizwana Khan is training to be a nurse. As a teenager, she became terribly sick, but her treatment was a problem. Medical centers in the area were of very poor quality and there were no women doctors. It made her decide to get her own education. She wants to bring medical aid to women in her area. "Some families don't want to educate their daughters, but if women are ill, they want a lady doctor. How will that happen?" Rizwana said.
Anjum Islam is studying law. She wants to provide free legal aid for women. But her bigger goal is to change minds. "Men think that women are only meant to do housework and give birth to children," Islam said, "We have to change this thinking. If we have equality under the law, how can society look down on women?"
The campaign is having success in influencing some women. Aslima Khan is 30 years old. All day long she works with the animals, finds firewood, cleans, cooks and washes dishes. She is determined to educate her three daughters. She wants to make sure they can escape her life story of hard, backbreaking work. "Had I had studied, I would have been saved from this," she said.
I am a person who has always loved reading. For me, it is easy to get lost in a book and return to the world a couple of hours later having been on an adventure. As a 6-year-old, I could be found reading Harry Potter, a difficult book for a 6-year-old but I enjoyed it all the same. Now, as a student, it is harder to find the time to read books for pleasure; however, I relish the summers where I have the time to read to satisfy myself. Growing up, it soon became clear that spelling for me was not difficult and I had a wide vocabulary. This is because I began reading from such a young age.
My advice for you as English learners would be to read the books that you have often read in your own language in English. Reading, stories especially, is a great way of improving your vocabulary and spelling without noticing as you are lost in the story. For me, I have read Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in French and am currently reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in Spanish. This is a really useful way of being able to read in another language because I know the story so well in English, it is easy to follow the story in the foreign language even if I do not understand every word.
This is another important point: it is not necessary to understand every word. If you understand the meaning of the sentence, each word is not necessarily important. Sometimes it is impossible to translate directly from one language to another. Quite often, if a word is used several times in a text, you can gain your own meaning from it and it makes much more sense than if you tried to translate it in the first place.
Give it a try. If you like reading you could be opening up a whole new world of literature.
Nelson Mandela, once said: "If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to a man in his own language, that goes to his heart." Mandela understood our mother language is very personal thing to us.
After all, it's the language we first hear and the language we first learn to speak. We can communicate in a nuanced(微妙的) way through our mother language, expressing our emotions and moods more fluently. We make friends in our mother language. We fall in love in it. When we die, we know people will mourn for us in our mother language.
For people who speak an ancient tongue as their mother language, their language is their main link with their ancestors. And it is also how they imagine the future. So it's a serious thing that a language disappears. Over the last century, more than 400 languages have died. Some languages are now spoken only by a few dozen people, like Yagan in Chile. Africa and South America are also places where many languages are imperiled.
Why are humans speaking fewer languages than we once did? The answer has to do with globalization(全球化). With greater trade and communication, the planet has become smaller. Some people aren't prepared to accept a planet with fewer and fewer languages.
Through efforts both large and small, they are getting people to speak and read in certain languages, and to pass them on. The United Nations has set Feb 21st as International Mother Language Day to raise awareness of dying languages. This work is very important. As US writer Rita Mac Brown wrote, "Language is the roadmap of a culture. It tells where its people come from and where they are going".
How to help yourself relax before bed
Having trouble sleeping lately? There are a great number of things that can keep a person up at night. Some causes of sleeplessness are beyond our control. .
Mindful meditation (冥想)
You may not be able to force your mind to quiet down, but a moment of mental silence just might sneak (潜入) up on you. . Then it is much easier to pursue that feeling and cause it to take place.
It's silly to expect your mind to stop worrying. You can write about all the things that are worrying you and how you will deal with them. By putting those solutions on paper, and trying to carry out them, you can reduce the number of troublesome things in your mind.
Create a pre-sleep routine
It's hard to change from worrying to relaxing if you jump into bed as soon as you finish answering work emails. . For example, you can have a warm shower, followed by going to bed with a glass of warm milk while listening to some soft music. The best part of this is that such things tend to become more powerful over time.
Stay healthy
There are some vitamin (维生素) and hormone imbalances that can mess up your energy levels. . Such imbalances can be eased by the use of moderate vitamin supplements and keeping fit through taking natural remedies, such as exercise, healthy diet, good relationships, and so on.
A. Put down your worries
B. Go to bed as early as you can
C. This disorder makes it harder for you to go to sleep
D. So it is helpful to make some adjustments before bed
E. There is a time and place for worrying, but bedtime is neither
F. However, there's always something we can do to get better sleep
G. Once you know what a quiet mind feels like, you'll like the feeling
I was at the market at 5 p.m. to pick up a few essentials (必需品): Cream for coffee, eggs for breakfast and Advil (布洛芬) for my1. After struggling all day doing jobs, I did not want to be2, because I'm so tired. But I told myself it was my3stop before going home to put my feet up.
So I4a parking place, grabbed a bag from the trunk and found a shopping cart. That's when I saw her. She was5in a shopping cart. She looked to be maybe 9-months old, short blond curls, blue eyes. I couldn't take my6off her. Then I did what I always do with 7: I gave her my best smile. It may have looked a bit mad, 8 it comes from my heart.
That's a (an) habit I formed long ago when I became a mother. It started with my child, in that unforgettable, life-changing moment of her birth. I've learned that everyone needs a 9sometimes, young and old, friends and10, even those at the market in a rush to get home. She took her time deciding just what to make of my smile. But finally, she lit up a smile to me. I wish you could have seen her. I laughed and waved goodbye. And she11me a kiss. That put a smile on my face that got a smile12from every shopper I passed. I was13smiling when I got home and realized I'd forgotten to get Advil. 14, I didn't need it. My headache was gone.
Somehow, in that simple15of smiles, this weary old world becomes a better place. If you're lucky, maybe they'll even blow you a kiss and make your headache go away.
