Edward got up early on the New Year morning. He ran into the street to say "Happy New Year" to people he might meet. When he came back, his father gave him two bright, new silver dollars. He had wished for a long time to buy some pretty books that he had seen at the bookstore.

He left the house with happiness, expecting to buy the books. As he ran down the street, he saw a poor family.

"I wish you a Happy New Year," said Edward, as he was happily walking on. The man shook his head.

"You are not from this country?" asked Edward. The man shook his head, for he could not understand or speak Edward's language. But he pointed to his mouth, and to the children shaking with cold, as if to say, "These little kids have had nothing to eat for a long time." "I haven't bought books," said Edward. "I gave my money to some poor people." He went on, "I think I can wait for my books till next New Year."

You may have heard the saying "The Yangtze River is China's mother river." It is almost 6,400 kilometers long. As the world's third longest river, it covers one-fifth of China's land area. The Yangtze River Economic Zone(长江经济带) covers eleven provinces and cities, making up about forty percent of China's total population and GDP.

On December 26th, 2020, China passed the Yangtze River Protection Law, which could work on March 1st, 2021. It is the first law to protect a waterway in China.

The mother river is in great need of protection because something is wrong with it. For example, because of overfishing and water pollution, some fishes in the river have died out there. There's also desert-field land and soil pollution near the river.

According to the law, fishing will not be allowed in all of the Yangtze's natural waterways, including its tributaries(支流)and lakes. Those who are caught fishing will be fined(罚款) 50,000 to 500,000 yuan.

Digging sand will be strictly controlled in the river. Many companies are digging sand along the river. However, this has led to lower water levels on the river, which has caused the river's water to decline.

In 1988, Wang Chengbang retired(退役) from the army. Instead of enjoying a relaxing life, he volunteered to plant trees in Xinjiang.

It is not an easy job. The high temperature makes it difficult for anyone to work day after day in the sunshine. It also makes it hard for the small trees to grow up. Besides, water shortage(短缺) is a big problem. In fact, most of the trees died at first.

With his hard work, more and more trees have been planted. So far, he has planted more than 1.5 million trees. Those trees prevent desertification(沙漠化) making the air cleaner and protecting people from the hot sun.

Wang Chengbang is also successful in fighting cancer(癌症). In 2005, he had cancer and was told that he had only six months to live. When things around the house stop working, what do you usually do with them? If you're like a lot of people, you probably just throw them away.

In some areas, it's difficult to find people who can make repairs, and fixing things can be quite expensive. Also, some small objects are so inexpensive that it's often easier to just buy a new one.

In 2009, Martine Postma from the Netherlands(荷兰)decided there must be a better way. Her method was Repair Cafes: places where people can take broken things. There they will find tools and volunteer experts who are ready to help with repairs.

Postma's first Repair Care opened on Oct. 18, 2009, in Amsterdam, and was a huge success. News of the cafe spread, and people began asking how they could start their own. In 2011, Postma built the Repair Care Organization. This organization provides help for those hoping to begin their own neighbourhood repair group.

Today, there are about 2,000 Repair Cafes around the world with meetings usually taking place once a month. Around 25 objects are repaired during each meeting. Everything is free, but donations(捐赠) are greatly welcome.

The cafes not only provide help with repairs, but they also make people closer in the community. Neighbours get to know one another as they work together on projects. Valuable knowledge is passed. Moreover, broken things are kept rather than thrown away. It does good to protecting the environment.
