Last August we were on vacation at Diana's Baths, a place famous for waterfalls.
1on the rocks with my husband, I watched some parents nervously guarding their kids away from the rocks' edges (边缘). I felt glad that our 8 - year - old son Wyatt2look after himself.3, I still felt worried as I saw my boy jump and down.
Suddenly, I saw Wyatt sit down4two rocks in the running water, I shouted at him to get out. He shouted back something and then he disappeared over the edge.
"Help my son!" I cried, over and over again. But I only heard a woman saying," That boy just went over the waterfall!" She shouted at her husband, "Let's go home!" They walked away, not even looking back to see5or not my kid was OK.
By the time I climbed down to the rocks below, my husband6Wyatt out of the water with the help of a young woman. She said. "I'm Lisa, a nurse. I'm not leaving you. "She looked at me7, as if she were trying to take energy, love and strength (力量) in her body and pass them on to me. I held that energy like a rope that could pull us to safety. Wyatt was taken to the hospital8. After we spent a sleepless night there, we9Wyatt was going to be OK. We finally felt relaxed.
Meeting Lisa has reminded me how we need help from people we don't know. I know we are two strangers10are less strange.
Giving a hand can bring strangers closer together.
Alleyn's School Townley Road, Dulwich, UK Email@www.alleynes.org.uk |
Welcome to Alleyn's School. Our school is great and it has 600 students aged 13--15. However, there were only 100 students and four teachers in our school when it was open on September 10th, 1961.
Main Teaching Building
The school has a huge yard and next to it is the main teaching building. The building has two floors, with six classrooms on each. In each classroom there is a computer, a projector(放映机), and a smart white board. It also has a small reading area with different kinds of books offered by the students.
Library
Our school library is open during all the reading weeks. The members of the reading club can meet here and do some reading freely after school.
School Hall
We have a fantastic school hall. It is used for gym, meetings and having lunch. It is the place where we hold many events, such as school plays, concerts, indoor games and so on.
Other rooms
We have a perfect music room for music lessons, a computer room of thirty - two computers and a large lobby (休息室)for teachers to have a rest during the lunch time.
Jim and Della are a couple. They had two treasures which they were both proud of. One was Jim's gold watch that was from his father and his grandfather. The other was Della's beautiful hair. It fell on her, and reached her knee.
Della went out of the door and down the stairs to the street. She stopped at a store. The sign in front of the store read "Hair Goods(发饰) ". "Will you buy my hair?" asked Della. "Twenty dollars," the saleswoman said. Then Della searched through the stores looking for a present for Jim.
She found it at last. It was a watch chain. It was twenty - one dollars. At seven o'clock, the coffee was made and dinner was ready. Jim was never late. The door opened and Jim walked in. He stopped inside the door. His looked at Della in surprise, and there was an expression that she could not read.
"Jim," she cried, "don't look at me that way. I sold my hair to buy you a Christmas present."
Jim took out a small box from his pocket and put it on the table. Della opened it. There lay the set of combs(梳子)that she had always wanted. Now they were Della's, but her hair was gone.
She smiled and held out Jim's present. "I searched all over town to find it. Give me your watch. I want to see how fantastic the watch chain looks on it. "
Jim sat down, put his hands behind his head and smiled. "Della," he said, "I've sold the watch to get the money to buy the combs."
What is the real love? Loving and caring each other will bring it.
Fan Shenghua is one of the inheritors(继承人)of West Lake Longjing tea roasting technique(炒茶技艺). He has been making Longjing tea for more than forty years. Longjing tea leaves are famous for their color, taste and shape.
"You have to touch the leaves with your hands to feel how much water should be removed (去除) ," Fan said. "If too much water is removed, the leaves will break into pieces easily; if not enough of it is removed, the tea will taste terrible."
This traditional technique (技术)dates back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. It not only makes the tea taste good, but has also become an important part of Chinese tea culture.
These days, however, more people are using machines to do the job. "It's easier, but the quality is not as good as I expected," Fan said. "Machine - made tea floats(漂浮) longer in water and tastes worse. "
In March, 2021, when President Xi Jinping visited Hangzhou, he watched Fan roast tea. Fan changed the movement of his hands as he roasted leaves. Xi later said, "The things made by two hands can not be taken the place by modern technology."
Fan is now teaching some young men. His son, a 24 -year -old college student, is one of them. "It's a tradition. We need to pass it down," he said.
Here is a book that is easy to read but is on a big subject. The book is named Animal Farm. It is a story about farm animals. They can't stand the farmer, Mr. Jones.
Animal Farm is an excellent book for learners of English because it's very short. But remember, the book may seem simple, but it is very serious about the real world. George Orwell called his book a fairy tale. But not all fairy tales are simple or innocent (单纯的). The book is really about Russia in the dark.
The book became very famous in the West from the late 1940s. From very early it was made into other kinds of works. You could hear it on the radio made by the BBC in 1947.
Whatever you think about the book, Orwell did create a wonderful story in a clever way.
A. It is written by the English writer George Orwell. B. This one isn't either. C. He treats them badly, so they decide to manage the farm themselves. D. It has also been made into a film twice. E. The language is also simple. |

A: OK, I'll be there at that time. See you on Sunday.
B: See you.
A. How about Saturday afternoon? B. I guess we can meet at 2 pm. C. Could we meet on Sunday instead? D. Are you available this weekend? E. Shall we meet at the art show? F. It seems perfect for me. G. I need to attend a meeting in the morning. |

As the students came into the classroom, they could say something was wrong. Their history teacher was crying. Tom was the to ask if there was something he could do.
"Everything is fine, Tom," Mrs. Williams tried to smile as she spoke. "I've just something important, and I don't think I can find it."
"What did you lose?" Mike asked. "Maybe we can help you look for it."
Mrs. Williams looked at their faces for some time. , she answered, "Well, I lost my old newspaper. This newspaper my grandmother. I had hoped to share something in the paper with you in history class. The paper is old, but it is also special because she gave it to me before she died."
Trevor went over and said to Mrs. Williams, "Don't worry, Mrs. Williams. We will all help you. Your paper must be if we work together."
Mrs. Williams smiled again at her students. She knew might not find the missing paper, but even if they couldn't, she would still feel very . She had a group of students who cared about her, and that was probably the best thing she could ever hope in her life!
Wu Mengchao, the "Father of Chinese Hepatobiliary Surgery(肝胆外科)", had been saving people's lives for nearly eighty years. He performed more than 16,000 operations (手术)during his life. Holding the surgeon's knife for such a long time hurt his fingers. Wu once said, "It would my greatest happiness if I could work at the operating table until my dying day."
In 1969, in order to solve the problem of treating malaria(疟疾), Tu Youyou took on the job as head of a research team. She and her teammates performed different kinds of experiments. However, the results were disappointing. Instead of giving up, they kept trying. Finally, in 1972, they made it! In 2015, at the age of 85, she received Nobel Prize.
Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb (灯泡)believed that every failure was a step towards success. He once said, "If I find 10,000 ways that won't work, I haven't failed. I am not disappointed, because every wrong try is another step forward."
Sometimes, their success was a surprise, even to themselves. The famous scientist Alexander Fleming once said, "In fact, I didn't plan to revolutionize(变革)all medicine by discovering the world's first antibiotic(抗生素). But I guess that was exactly what I did.
One thing all these people have in common is sticking to their goals.
①p to do sth. suc has a piece of work or task
②r a careful study of a subject, especially to discover new facts about it
I am not disappointed, because every wrong try is another step forward.
