Michael Todd wore the same clothes every day for the first three weeks of school. He became the target of laughter, but there was little Todd could do. His mother simply couldn't afford to buy him new clothes.
Two of the kids laughing at Todd were Antwan Garret and Kristopher Graham, a pair of freshman football players. But over time, they realized that their words seemed to hurt Todd's spirit.
"I feel like I needed to do something." Graham says. So he and Garret made a plan. They went home and hunted through their own closets (橱柜). The next day at school, they met Todd at their third-period class and asked him to come into the hall. Todd was worried about being called out by the boys.
"He wasn't smiling, and I was like, I think this is going to make you smile," Graham says. "I told him, We're in the same third period, and I apologize for laughing at you. I want to give something to you to make up for it." He then handed Todd a bag. Inside were clean shirts and shorts, plus a brand-new pair of New Balance sports shoes.
Todd was blown away. "I was very happy," he says. "Shocked, completely." And Todd got much more than a new closet. Now, he no longer sits alone at lunch. He eats with his new friends, Garret and Graham.
Reflecting on the day Garret and Graham called him into the hall, Todd called it the best day of his entire life.
Growing up, I wanted to be just like my mom. She was kind. People always seemed to feel comfortable in her presence. For years, she was a volunteer in our community. I loved going to the local nursing home with her where she taught a ceramic class.
On one summer day, Mama told me to get changed and meet her at the car.
I had planned to spend the day at the lake with friends. Why did she have to ruin everything? I imagined the cool lake water. Irritated, I climbed into the car and slammed the door shut. We sat in silence. I was too upset to make conversation.
"Tasha, would you like to know where we are going?" Mama asked calmly.
"No," I said.
"We are going to volunteer at a children's shelter today. I have been there before and I think it would benefit you," she explained.
When we reached the shelter, Mama rang the doorbell. Moments later, we were greeted by a woman. She led us to the front room where all of the children were playing. I noticed a baby whose body was scarred with iron marks. I was told it was because she wouldn't stop crying. The majority of the children had noticeable physical scars. Others hid their emotional wounds.
As I took in my surroundings, I felt a gentle tug on my shirt. I looked down to see a little girl looking up at me. "Hi. You want to play dolls with me?" she asked. I looked over at Mama for reinforcement. She smiled and nodded. I turned back and said, "Sure." Her tiny hand reached up and held mine, as if to comfort me.
My mom taught me a valuable lesson that summer. I returned to the shelter with her several times. During those visits, some of the children shared their troubled pasts with me and I learned to be grateful for what I had. Today as I strive to instill (逐渐灌输) these values in my own child, I reflect back to that experience. It was a time that I will never forget.
Losing a baby tooth can be fun for a kid. You can put it under your pillow and look forward to finding some money there in the morning. And then you can watch your new permanent(永恒的) tooth grow in its place.
But if a permanent tooth falls out, that's a problem. There isn't another one under the gum(齿龈)that can replace it. Unfortunately, this happens to some older people. And if permanent teeth fall out or need to be pulled, an older person might need dentures.
Dentures, known as false teeth, are a set of replacement teeth for any teeth that are missing. There are partial dentures, which take the place of only a few teeth and prevent the others from changing position. If all the teeth are gone, the person would need complete dentures, which replace every tooth in the mouth.
Dentures can cause pains at first and take little time to get adjusted to. They also need special care. They should be brushed daily with a special denture brush and cleanser and soaked (浸泡) in denture solution when not in the mouth.
Dentures are important for the old because, without teeth, it's hard to smile, talk, and eat properly. But it can be a little weird if you see someone take out his or her dentures. It can also be strange to see someone, like a grandparent, without dentures in because he or she won't have any teeth. Try not to make fun of the person because this could cause hurt feelings.
People usually lose their permanent teeth due to periodontal disease (牙周炎), or gum disease, which is caused by bacteria that attacks the gums. Diseased gums aren't strong and healthy, so teeth can get loose and fall out. Older people often have many cavities(洞)that have been filled over the years, and these fillings can weaken over time, leading to more tooth problems.
A good book can be satisfying. If reading is a habit you'd like to get into, there are some ways to develop it.
● Realize that reading is enjoyable if you have a good book. If you have a difficult book and you are forcing yourself through it, it will seem like a task.
● Set time. You should have some time during every day when you'll read for at least 5 to 10 minutes. For example, make it a habit to read during breakfast and lunch and even dinner if you eat alone.
● Always carry a book. When I leave the house, I always make sure to have my car keys and one book at hand. The book stays with me in the car, and I take it into the office and to appointments and pretty much everywhere I go.
● Find a place in your home where you can sit in a comfortable chair. Don't lie down unless you're going to sleep. There should be no television or computer near the chair, and no music or noisy family members / roommates. If you don't have a place like this, create one.
● Reduce television / the Internet. If you really want to read more, try cutting back on time on TV or the Internet. Still, every minute you reduce of the Internet / TV, you could use for reading. This could create hours of book reading time.
A. Go to bookstores.
B. Find a quiet place.
C. This may be difficult for some people.
D. Wherever you go, take a book with you.
E. Have some good tea or coffee while you read.
F. It means you will read no matter how busy you are.
G. If this happens, give up the book and find another one that you'll really love.

I felt so nervous. It was the day of my interview. I woke up early just to make sure I would have time to get prepared. It felt like a normal Monday, but for me, this day was very important. There was a lot of pressure.
After showering, I put on the outfit I had carefully chosen and laid out the night before. I looked at my reflection in the mirror. "You can do this," I encouraged myself. I ate breakfast and fed my cat. I made my way to the bus stop and waited patiently. Aside from the rapid tapping of my right foot, no one could tell that I was so nervous.
When I arrived at my stop, I walked to the office. The building was so tall and I felt small in its shadow. But I also felt hopeful. This will be a great opportunity, I thought. And what is there to lose? Looking down at my watch, I noticed that I was early. This allowed plenty of time to review my resume (简历) and further prepare myself for the interview.
The doors of the building were impressive, all steel and glass and very modern.
When I walked in, someone showed me the waiting area and offered me a cup of coffee. After a few moments, a man in a nice suit told me to join him. As we walked toward the elevators, I began to feel anxious. The palms of my hands began to sweat. It seemed like an hour had passed before I heard the "ding" of the elevators opening.
We got into the elevator, full of men and women dressed to the nines.
"It's quite a large office," the man said to me. I chuckled nervously. I could feel myself getting warmer. I couldn't wait to hear that comforting "ding" that signaled an escape.
As the elevator climbed, I again nervously checked my watch. Just as I looked down, it happened.
Paragraph 1:
The elevator came to a stop between floors.
Paragraph 2:
I thought that this must be the worst interview ever.
