As cities around the world try to be smart, some have become stupid instead.

So, what is a "stupid city"? It is a city that gives in to urban sprawl(扩张), with people moving from central areas to less-crowded communities, said Mr. Nicholas You, a director of the Guangzhou Institute for Urban Innovation in China. Such communities are heavily reliant on cars.

Another problem Mr. You stressed is that public administration bodies in "stupid cities'' tend to work alone, refusing to share data that could help develop solutions to urban problems. He made the point during a discussion on urban transformation in Asia, saying, "A real smart city is one that looks at everything as a whole—you can't look at water issues without looking at energy."

A South Korean member, Mr. Jong Sung Hwang, suggested that some of the biggest barriers to creating a smart city are cultural. South Korean society is less forgiving of mistakes, noted Mr. Jong. For example, some in Seoul tried to push for an intelligent traffic system but were met with resistance from the police. He said, "We have ideas, data and even money, but we could not make it happen."

India, however, is not adopting a one-size-fits-all approach to create smart cities for its 1.3 billion people, said a member from India.

In Singapore, which launched its Smart Nation initiative( 行 动 ) in 2014, the authorities fear that technology can worsen the divide between the haves and the have-nots, said Dr. Limin Hee, director for research at the Centre for Liveable Cities here. "Thankfully, many cities are considering such issues as how to make better use of data and technology to create smart cities," she added.

    1. (1) What can we learn about a smart city?
A . It encourages urban expansion. B . It has few people in its central areas. C . It solves urban problems by sharing data. D . It treats every issue as a separate unit.
    2. (2) Why is it impossible to push an intelligent traffic system in Seoul?
A . People are tolerant of mistakes. B . The police are afraid of making mistakes. C . The government is lacking enough money. D . The traffic system in Seoul is very advanced.
    3. (3) What problem might India face when creating smart cities?
A . Its population is decreasing. B . It has no examples to follow. C . It fails to adopt a universally right system. D . It lacks advanced technologies.
    4. (4) What do Singaporean authorities worry about the technology?
A . The disapproval of the public. B . More money spent than expected. C . The development of cities being limited. D . The increasing gap between the rich and the poor.

Today, we study literature from a young age—learning about our histories, faraway worlds and influential people. Whether we notice or not, these stories—both fiction and non-fiction—guide us throughout our lives. They allow us to see the world through another's eyes, open up our world and teach us about every subject known to man.

Despite their importance, many people throw out their old books—laying waste the wisdom that lies on each page. In an effort to save this knowledge and share it with those less fortunate, a garbage man in, Bogota, Colombia has been saving thrown-away books for 20 years and sharing them with those in need.

"I hated to see all the books in the dustbins of wealthier neighborhoods. So I started to rescue them,'' said Gutierrez. The first book he found was a copy of the classic novel Anna Karenina. The Tolstoy book was later joined by The Little Prince, Sophie's World, The Iliad and a number of novels. Today, he has collected around 25,000 books.

His growing collection didn't go unnoticed. Gutierrez's neighbors were soon borrowing the books to help with their children's homework. "There was a lack of them in our neighborhood, so we started to help," said Gutierrez.

The ground floor of Gutierrez's home is now filled with books, from floor to ceiling. Over spilling with books, he opened it up as a free library, with the help of his wife Luz Gutierrez and their three children.

Word eventually spread around about Gutierrez and his books. Most of the books now come from donations. He now travels around the country, delivering free books to poor and remote districts. The library, named "The Strength of Words", has donated books to some 235 schools, institutions and community libraries across Colombia.

      A . By stating some facts. B . By contradicting a theory. C . By describing a scene. D . By referring to documents.
    2. (2) What did the Tolstoy book mean to Gutierrez?
A . A heavy financial burden. B . A companion in difficult times. C . The beginning of his charity campaign. D . One of his greatest achievements in life.
    3. (3) Which saying does Gutierrez's story lead us to believe?
A . A good book is a light to the soul. B . A bad beginning makes a bad ending. C . Actions speak louder than words. D . One man's garbage is another man's treasure.
    4. (4) What's the best title for the text?
A . Tolstoy books recovered from dustbins. B . Literature now appeals to garbage collectors. C . Free libraries popular with neighborhood kids. D . Garbage man builds a library from rescued books.

Researchers found brushing your teeth three or more times per day is linked with lower risk of heart failure and atrial fibrillation—a heart condition that causes an irregular and often abnormally fast heart rate.

One possible theory behind the discovery is that frequent tooth brushing reduces bacteria living in the pocket between the teeth and gums, preventing it from entering the blood stream. Existing studies show poor oral hygiene(口腔卫生) leads to bacteria in the blood, causing inflammation(炎症) in the body. Inflammation increases the risks of irregular heartbeat and heart failure, where the heart's ability to pump blood or relax and fill with blood is weakened.

In their new research, scientists in South Korea examined the connection between oral hygiene and occurrence of these two conditions in a series of studies of more than 161,000 participants aged between 40 and 79.

Participants underwent a routine medical examination between 2003 and 2004 and information was collected on height, weight, laboratory tests, illnesses, lifestyle, oral health, and oral hygiene behaviors. During a follow-up of ten and a half years on average, three percent of participants developed atrial fibrillation and around five percent developed heart failure.

The lead investigator of the new study is Tae-Jin Song, a doctor and professor at Mokdong Hospital at Ewha Womans University in Seoul, South Korea, said: "We studied a large group over a long period, which adds strength to our findings." But he also noted that the analysis was limited to one country and as an observational study does not prove causation.

An accompanying editorial states: "It is certainly too early to recommend tooth brushing for the prevention of atrial fibrillation and congestive heart failure. While the role of inflammation in the occurrence of heart and blood vessels' disease is becoming more and more evident, further studies are needed to explain strategies of public health importance."

    1. (1) Which is true about frequent tooth brushing?
A . It reduces the risk of heart failure. B . It promotes the heart beat faster. C . It rids the bloodstream of bacteria. D . It weakens the hearts' ability to pump blood.
    2. (2) What does the underlined part "these two conditions" in paragraph 3 refer to?
A . Inflammation and bacteria. B . Heart failure and atrial fibrillation. C . Oral hygiene and occurrence of heart failure. D . The heart's ability to pump blood or relax and fill with blood.
    3. (3) It can be inferred that the outcome of the research      .
      A . is discouraging. B . has its limit. C . has its variety. D . is unexpected.
    4. (4) From which is this text probably taken?
      A . A magazine. B . A diary. C . A guidebook. D . A novel.

    How to Improve Math Skills

Make math part of your life. Take the opportunity to put your math skills to work in new and different situations outside your normal routine. For example, if, say, a sweater that's regularly$38 is on sale for 30% off, what is the sale price? Or if you plan to hike a new trail that's 7 miles long and it takes you 20 minutes to walk a mile, how long should you plan for your hike to take?

Make studying math a priority.Doing so will help you avoid procrastinating(拖延)and make it easier to get into "math" mode(模式)instead of sitting and staring blankly at the math book for 10 minutes. After putting in your study time, reward yourself by doing something you enjoy. It will encourage you to get through your math work and help you associate it with something pleasurable.

Take a break every hour. You won't be able to maintain necessary focus and you'll quickly tire yourself out. Instead, take a quick break to stand up, stretch, get a drink, or use the bathroom every hour.

In math, each topic builds upon the next, so, much like reading, it's difficult to make forward progress if you haven't mastered all of the necessary steps. If you're struggling with a particular idea or concept, don't skip it and move ahead.

    A. Solve problems neatly and completely.

    B. Master one concept before moving on to the next.

    C. Take the time to apply math in common situations.

    D. Avoid trying to solve math problems in your head.

    E. Don't try to work hard through four unbroken hours of math problems.

    F. Instead, seek help from the instructor or the tutor until you've mastered the idea.

    G. Set aside time to work on math at the same time and in the same place every day.

Last summer, I travelled to Meixian County with my friends. It is a small county at the foot of Taibai Mountain in Shanxi Province. We stayed there for one week and I1 my vacation because of the beautiful scenery at the top of the mountain.

I will2 forget the day when we climbed the main peak (山顶). The 3in that area changes very quickly: it was sunny in the early morning when we set out, 4 it began to rain heavily when we were only halfway up.

My teacher, Ms. Dixon, sent me to sit in the corner for a while to quiet the class. I didn't understand at all. I knew how to operate the record player. And besides, not everyone had steady hands or the know-how to play a record without damaging it.

So why was it, I wondered, that the class got upset when I tried to take over and show Marcia how to handle the record player the right way? I was only trying to help, as I had done many times before. I also couldn't understand why the teacher had sent me to the corner. I was taught to always help my classmates if they didn't understand or know how to do something. If anything, I thought the class was wrong in their judgment of me. I thought the teacher was certainly wrong in siding with them.

When everyone was excused for recess(休息), Ms. Dixon kept me in. I figured that I was in serious trouble, but I still didn't understand how my actions could have caused the teacher to react like this. I had never been in trouble so bad before.

"Why am I here and not at recess?" I asked Ms. Dixon.

The teacher didn't say a word. Instead, she placed a word puzzle in front of me. I guessed Ms. Dixon wanted me to do it, so I got out my pencil and attempted to solve it. This was like no other puzzle I had done before. It was difficult, with words I didn't understand. I raised my hand for help, but Ms. Dixon ignored me. Maybe Ms. Dixon was just keeping me in to protect me from the other students' mean words.

I struggled with the word puzzle until I was about to give up and throw it away. But I was not a quitter, and so I stayed with the challenge. Once I got one word. I was able to get another, and soon I had solved the problem by myself.

    注意:1)续写词数应为150左右;

    2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

I felt proud and raised my hand high to get Ms. Dixon's attention.

    ……

I finally understood that I was actually robbing them of their chance to learn by themselves.
