Average Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

    Customer Reviews

    1)★★★★★

My favorite shoes! I've been to many conferences where my business fellows have told me how much they like my shoes. Just wearing them makes me feel more calm and content in the office. I recommend them to all of my coworkers, and I own a pair of each color.

    2)★

These are the worst shoes I have ever worn! The leather came off after only one week, and everybody thought they were ugly. The bottoms of the shoes made everything slippery. My employer fired me because he hated them! From then on, I would only wear Brand X shoes!

    3)★★★

These shoes do exactly what shoes are supposed to do. There isn't anything too special about them. In the morning, I put them on and go about my day. They look delightful enough, and they are quite durable (耐穿的). I will probably buy another pair.

    4)★★★★

These shoes are my favorite things. I met my bride while buying a pair of these shoes. She was a customer service employee at the store I bought them at, and after she sold me three pairs, I asked her for her phone number and we started dating. Soon after that, we were engaged. We are getting married this afternoon, and I couldn't be happier.

How often do you talk with someone? How often do you find you can't remember his/her words? Or, perhaps you get distracted (分心) while he/she is speaking and miss his/her messages. Nowadays, modern life is full of distractions: TVs, radios, telephones, and so on, which can make it difficult to listen attentively.

But how can we listen more effectively? John Kabatzin, professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, put forward the idea of mindful (用心的) listening. He said mindfulness means paying attention in a special way, with a purpose, at the present moment and non-judgmentally (不评头论足地).

When we listen mindfully, we many have some difficulties but still remain open to the speaker's ideas and messages. Mindfulness encourages us to focus on the present moment, avoid  distractions and ignore physical and emotional reactions (反应) to what people say.

But how can we apply mindful listening to our life? John describes three key elements (要素) which can help improve our listening skills.

First, be present. When we listen, focus on the speaker without distractions. Then cultivate the ability to understand others. When we develop it, we can understand a situation from someone else's point of view. Finally, listen to our own "cues", such as the thoughts, feelings and physical reactions that we have when we feel anxious or angry.

The rule is simple: just "Listen"! Listen carefully and attentively. Pay full attention to the other person, and don't let other thoughts, like what we are going to say next, distract us.

    1. (1) What's the purpose of the first paragraph?
A . To introduce the topic. B . To raise a question. C . To show the influence of distractions D . To describe daily situations.
    2. (2) What is one of the advantages of mindful listening?
A . Making physical and emotional reactions.      B . Sharing messages with the speaker.       C . Stopping distracting thoughts.                D . Making sure of feeling understood.
    3. (3) What does the underlined word "it" in paragraph 5 refer to?
A . The feeling of trusting others. B . The ability to put yourself in others' shoes. C . The ability to help others. D . The behavior of listening to others.
    4. (4) What can be the best title for the passage?
A . Advantages of Mindful Listening B . Key Elements of Mindful Listening C . A Research on Mindful Listen D . An Introduction of Mindful Listening

60-year-old Richard Olsen had retired from his work. He was very interested in adventure and hunting. This time he hunted on a sparsely (稀少地) populated land. In the cold winter, he tried a new place and forgot to bring his cell phone, the only time on the trip. He trekked (艰苦跋涉) more than half a mile with two dogs to a harvested wheat field.

Eyes fixed on the horizon in expectation of another rabbit, Richard stepped on the thin snow on a canal (沟渠). Suddenly, the snow collapsed (倒塌) and he dropped four feet to the bottom.

Trapped in the canal, Richard couldn't move at all, his left leg badly hurt. Using his shotgun as a crutch (拐杖), he spent an hour climbing a half canal but slipped and slid back down when he was partly up. This time, one of his feet got stuck between two rocks. Richard told himself that if he didn't get himself out of that canal, he wasn't going to have a very good night.

Richard worked his foot free and climbed more slowly and cautiously out of the canal. Richard immediately realized the difficulty of the task before him. The accident occurred about 2 p. m. , and it was nearing 5 p. m. with the road far away as the sun was setting.

Richard focused on crawling (爬) to safety. Even with his gun supporting him, hopping (单足跳跃) was impractical. Instead, he sat down and pushed himself backward less than 40 inches at a time with his good leg. He was determined and sure that he must hold on. He was tired out and had more frequent breaks. Temperatures dropped overnight, and snow melted and his gloves and boots got wet. His hands and feet soon were completely numb (失去知觉的).
