Robby was 11 years old when his mother (a single mom) sent him to have his first piano lesson. I1 that students begin at an earlier age, but Robby said that it had always been his mother's dream to hear him play the piano. So I took him on2 a student.
Although Robby tried very hard, he didn't have a basic3 of music. However, he continued and at the end of each weekly lesson he'd always say "My mom's going to4 me play someday." But it seemed5 He didn't have a gift for music.
One day Robby stopped coming to our6 . He told me that his mom had been7 and unable to take him to piano lessons, but he was still practicing.
He asked if he could take part in my concert and I8 .
The night of the concert came. The high school gym was9 with parents, friends and relatives. The concert was going well. Then, Robby came up on stage. He announced that he had chosen Mozart's Concerto No. 21 in C Major. I was not10 for what I heard next. His11 danced on the keys...
He played so well that everyone was on their feet, clapping12 In tears, I ran up on13 . "Oh, Robby! How'd you do it?
"Well, Miss Hondorf, remember I told you my mom was sick? Well, actually she had cancer and passed away this morning. And well.... She was born14 so tonight was the first time she ever heard me play. I wanted to make15 special.
Beijing Winter Olympics Medal List
Norway, which has won the first place in the medal table 8 times, is in the first place again. Their athletes cover almost every competition and have certain advantages in many competitions. At the beginning of this Winter Olympics, Germany led the medal table, but Germany was overtaken by other countries in the end. Most of their gold and silver medals were concentrated in sleigh and sled. This time, China got the best Winter Olympics results in history. Gu Ailing won three medals on her own, including two gold medals and one silver medal. With other outstanding new-generation athletes such as Su Yiming, China will definitely win more gold medals in the Winter Olympics in the future. Sweden also got a nice result, from men s curling to women's relay races to short track speed skating and other aspects.
Look at the center circles of Diagram A and Diagram B. Which of the centre circles looks larger?
Take a first look and you probably think that the centre circle in Diagram A is smaller than that in Diagram B. In fact, they are exactly the same size.
Then look at the picture on the left. What do you see? A vase? Or two faces? Does the picture change quickly from one to the other again and again? Maybe or maybe not, but you can never see them at the same time.
"What's happening? Is something wrong with my eyes?" You may wonder at what you see. Don't worry. Here is how it goes:
When we look at things, our eyes send messages to our brains and then our brains interpret (解读) the information. However, sometimes our brains interpret the received information in a wrong way. It seems that our eyes are playing a joke on us. This often happens and we call it "visual illusion (视觉错误)"
Movie makers often make use of illusions. They make the objects around actors much smaller or bigger than usual. This makes us believe that the actors are much larger or smaller than they usually are. The movies Jurassic Park and Honey I shrunk the kids just make use of illusions.
a. We look at things with our eyes.
b. Our brains interpret the messages.
c. Our brains tell us what we have seen.
d. Our eyes send messages to our brains.
British people have always been good at saying "I' m sorry". They used to be so good at it that they would apologize (道歉) for things that weren't even their fault.
However, the British seem to be losing touch with their art. According to a new book by British writer Max Davidson, instead of saying "I'm sorry?" when they do something wrong, British people prefer to choose their words carefully.
In this book, Sorry…The Hardest Word and How to use it, Davidson writes about a number of recent apologies. One example is of British television host Jeremy Clarkson. He described Gordon Brown (Brown is blind in his left eye), the UK prime minister, as "a one-eyed Scottish fool". Clarkson was forced to apologize. He said:" In the heat of the moment, I made a remark (评论) about the prime minister. Now I apologize of reflection." Davidson says the apology was just "going through the motions".
Clarkson is not the only one. The best example may come from the UK MP (议员) Tessa Jowell. She said publicly: "If you feel our government falls short of what you expect, then I say sorry for that" Jowell said "sorry". But she is actually saying it's not the government's fault but the voters' fault for expecting too much from the government.
Perhaps those people with influence feel they may lose too much by apologizing. But as a teenager, would you really want to lose a close friend, just because you couldn't say something as simple as," I'm sorry"? That would be hard to forgive.
Thanks to the world-famous Colombian writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez, many people think of Latin America as a land of magic.
Where does the magic in his books come from? Although. Some of their differences have caused conflicts (冲突), they have also been a source of beauty, as well as encouraged people in Latin America to be more open-minded.
Latin America includes more than 30 countries and areas located south of the United States in the American continent (大陆). It starts from Mexico in North America, going through the Caribbean and down into the southernmost tip of south America.
People can enjoy sunshine on the Caribbean islands, ride horses across the green grass of the pampas or explore volcanoes and snow-capped mountains in the Andes. It even has the world's biggest rainforest - the Amazon. Many of the world's most unique plants and animals live there.
In countries like Mexico and Colombia, over half of the population is of mixed ethnicity. However, most of them speak the same languages -Spanish or Portuguese. The music and dance of Latin America is quite well-known. Latin American people have created the samba rumba, cha-cha and tango.
People often dance in bars, at parties and at carnivals. Latin dance styles are fun and can bring strangers together. Latin America is an open and romantic place. Its impressive natural environment historical contributions and cultural traditions have made it unique and influential.
A. These dance styles require dancers to hold each other close and move in a passionate way. B. Latin America's environment is quite diverse. C. It may come from the mix of different cultures and ethnicities in Latin America. D. In Marquez's books, impossible things happen in this part of the world. E. There is also a diverse mix of people in Latin America, including natives, Africans and Europeans. |
Presleigh learned a tough love lesson today. I went to 3 different stores to get that LOL pencil box which is now in the dustbin there. When I surprised her with it this afternoon (thinking she would be excited), she stared at it and threw it into the dustbin and slammed the bedroom door. She yelled "that's stupid, everyone in my class has one. I don't want it anymore!"
OK. So, by this time there was probably smoke coming out of my ears and I'm trying really hard not to completely lose it on this kid. I have worked so hard to completely make money on my own to make sure she always gets what she needs. I thought I had always taught her to be thankful to know how lucky she was but apparently, she needed a small wakeup all! So before completely going mad on my child, I check myself and say, "okay that's fine, let me go and get the one you're going to use". Then I came back with her new pencil box, which is a simple ziploc bag. She lost her mind! Suddenly the LOL Box she just trashed was good enough and the ziploc bag was terrible. But it was too late for all that. I told her to get the LOL out of the dustbin and we would give it to somebody that knows to be thankful. For example, he or she can be somebody whose mommy and daddy don t have money for any school supplies or someone who may not even have a mommy or daddy. I explained to her she was not born with anything special and she didn't realize how lucky she was.
So, for now she will be using a ziploc bag and give the nice box to another child that knows to be thankful. Maybe I over react sometimes but I would've done anything to have all the things she does as a child. I truly believe changing your perception and just being thankful can turn around any situation in life.
