When I was a child, my father told me a story about himself. My father told me he was a rich young man. When my grandfather1, he left my father a beautiful forest manor(庄园). Unluckily, before my father could sell it for a lot of2, a big fire destroyed it. 3 beautiful green trees turn into waste suddenly, he felt his heart was broken.
After a few days, my father wanted to borrow some money4 a bank to bring back the forest manor's beauty. But the bank refused him because the bank didn't5he could pay it back. Then he felt so6that he didn't want to eat or drink anything. So he hid in7 room for days. My mother was worried about him8advised my father to take a walk outside. So my father went out for a9. When he turned the first corner, he saw a store with a huge crowd. "It could be holiday discounts(促销)." he thought. Finally, it10that the women were waiting to buy charcoal(炭) used for winter heating. Then a(n) 11 came to my father and his eyes were bright suddenly. He ran home and planned to make the forest's burnt12into charcoal.
As soon as his charcoal came on the market, it sold out quickly. Soon, he sold more than 1,000 boxes of charcoal. It made my parents very13. In the spring of the following year, the money was used to buy a large number of small trees. After a few years, the forest manor that was destroyed by the 14 came to life again.
Hearing the story, I15realized everything will be fine as long as we never give up. As the saying goes, "When one door shuts, another opens in life." It's the story that encourages me to keep on going ahead whatever happens.
People need gear(装备)to play some sports, and to help us stay safe when we play. Animals have some parts that work like our gear, but animals never need to put their gear on-- it's built-in!
Cleats are shoes with plastic or rubber pegs (钉子) on their bottom. The small parts dig into and grip the ground. A cheetah's claws (爪)always stick out a little, so they're always ready to go. The tips of the cheetah's claws dig in and help it run and turn-- just like your cleats! |

Skis are long and flat. They're made of plastic and metal. Their smooth bottoms move over snow and ice. A penguin can't walk fast. When it needs to travel over snow and ice, it uses its smooth stomach instead. The penguin lies on its stomach and pushes itself forward with its feet. |

We don't see clearly underwater. Swim goggles keep a pocket of air around our eyes. Then we see through air, just like we do on the land. A dolphin's eyes have a different shape from ours. They see clearly underwater and can make a quick change after lifting their heads. |
I am my mother's third girl. When I was born, the doctor gently explained to my mother that my left arm was missing, below the elbow(肘). Then,he gave her some advice, "Don't treat her any differently from the other girls." And she did!
There were five girls in our family and we all had to help out. Once when I was about seven, I came out of the kitchen, "Mom, I can't peel(削……皮)potatoes. I only have one hand.""You get back to peel those potatoes, and don't ever use that as an excuse for anything again!"
Of course I could peel potatoes with my good hand and my other arm. "Jenny, if you try hard enough," she said, "you can do anything."
Once in the second grade, our teacher had each of us race across the monkeybar(攀爬架). When it was my turn, I said "No". Some kids laughed. I went home crying.
The next afternoon, Mom took me back to the school playground. "Now, pull up with your right arm," she advised. She praised me when I made progress. I'll never forget when I was crossing the bar, the kids were standing there with their mouths open.
It was the way with everything. Mom had the courage to face anything. And she taught me I could, too.
①"Believe in yourself.""It's okay to be different."
②These are a few of the encouraging messages that callers can hear when they call the PepToc Hotline(热线). It is part of an art project created by teachers Jessica Martin and Asherah Weiss with students at West Side School in California. The hotline took off after it started. People called from around the world.
③This was a surprise. "At first, we wanted this project to be just for our little town," Martin said. The town had been through a hard time because of the wildfires and the pandemic. But her students were tough and stayed happy.
④The PepToc project has two parts. One part is inspirational(鼓舞人心的)posters. Students put them up around town. There were more than 150 posters. "Kids just ran with it," Weiss says. The other part ispep talks(激励的话). Martin invited kids to record these pep talks for the telephone hotline. In its first several weeks, the hotline got millions of calls.
⑤"People need something to make them feel good in these difficult times," Darin Juric told TIME for Kids. He is a student who took part in the project. Martin agrees. "It really does just take a few words of kindness to spread(传播) joy around the world," she says.
When you are busy with your schoolwork, you might find it hard to get enough sleep. We all know that not getting enough sleep is bad for our health. But it has been found that less sleep could even cause you to have fewer friends, the Guardian reported.
According to researchers from the University of California, people who don't get enough sleep show no social interest in others. They are simply too tired to talk with others.
The researchers did a small study. They tested 18 young people who had just had a good night's sleep—as well as tested them again after a sleepless night. Then the 18 young people watched videos of people walking toward them. When the person on the video got too "close" to them, they pushed a button (按钮) to stop the video, which recorded how close they allowed the person to get.
The results showed that people kept the person at 60 percent further back if they hadn't got enough sleep. They felt that their personal space was being invaded (入侵). But when they got a good night's sleep, they allowed the person to get much closer to them.
According to lead researcher Matthew Walker, the less sleep you get, the less you want to socialize (交际) with others. In turn, other people may think you are weird and stay away from you. This can make you feel lonely and cause you to sleep even less. It becomes a vicious cycle (恶性循环).
So if you want to be a more sociable and popular person, sleeping well might help. "One night of good sleep makes you feel more outgoing and socially confident." Walker told the Daily Mail.
