What's your homework today? Now homework is not simply about exercises. It can be researches. experiments and even work experiences. Take a look at some students' special homework.
Mario's teacher asked them to research different snacks. He bought 10 kinds of them and checked the amount of sugar, fat and so on, in each. "We are told many snacks have high calories (卡路里),but pay no attention to it," he said. But now he realized it was true. He said the homework was interesting and helpful. |
With some plasticine (橡皮泥) and a ping-pong ball, could you make a tumbler (不倒翁)? This is Nancy's homework. She cut the ping-pong ball in half and made it the bottom of the tumbler with plasticine. "This homework made me more interested in physics," she said. |
Sandy worked as a guide in the museum. In order to do the work better, she did research and added more information to her introduction. It was hard work, but she felt it was a fun and meaningful experience. "I learned how to do research, and my communication skills are also improved," she said. |

Why do I sometimes see earthworms on the sidewalk after raining? It's really awful to clean them off my shoes. I've heard that they die if their holes are filled with water. |
|
Earthworms breathe (呼吸) through their skin, but they're also able to live for a long time in water. Scientists think that earthworms leave their holes because the rain hits the ground. |

I've been thinking about starting an earthworm farm. I can make lots of money by selling them to fishermen. I've heard that if I cut one in half, each half will grow into another worm. If this is true, I'll be rich in no time. |
|
I hope you haven't started cutting yet. That's only a playground legend. If you cut a worm in half, one half will die and the other half, with the head, may be dead too. Put your knife away and feed your earthworms a lot instead. |

Do some people really eat earthworms and why would they want to? |
|
Please don't throw up, but many people do eat earthworms. In some places, people eat earthworm pies. In other parts of the world, people fry them and some even eat them without cooking. Earthworms are low in fat and high in protein. They're healthier than eating beef. |

You're out enjoying the city when you find a group of people on the sidewalk. They are standing around some street dancers. The dancers are young, and they're wearing backward baseball caps, baggy pants, and sports shoes.
As the music plays, the dancers take turns showing off their movements,They slide(滑动)their feet back and forth before they drop to the ground. Then, they spin (旋转) around on their heads and backs. Sometimes, they even stop their bodies for a short time in the middle of a move.
The dance they perform is break dancing (霹雳). The young break dancers move with lots of speed, power, and energy. You can see that they have a great deal of talent. You can also see their love for break dancing. It's really cool to watch.
Break dancing is a form of dance full of energy. It mainly has four kinds of movements. They are toprock, footwork, power move, and freeze. Also, the music that is used has clear drum breaks.
Breaking got its start in New York City in the early 1970s. Young people fell in love with it, and thanks to TV, movies, and newspapers, the dance quickly got popular in many different cultures. By 2010, there were independent competitions around the world.
The rise of breaking isn't over yet. In 2024, it will enter the world stage as an official sport at the Paris Olympics. There, 16 male and 16 female break dancers will go head-to-head for the gold. This is great news for breaking and break dancers everywhere!
Orion Jean is a 10-year-old boy from Fort Worth, Texas. He is making a difference in the world with his acts of kindness. And these acts may change the lives of people he has helped.
It all began after a student kindness competition last year where he gave encouraging words to share about taking the first step. " Kindness is a virtue (美德) we can all have, if we are willing to, " he said." So why not start today? Because right now, it's what we need more than ever. "
With the $500 prize money he won, Orion gave away toys to a local children's hospital. Next, he helped prepare 100, 000 meals for families in Texas. And now he wants to give books to kids who may not have them and plans to collect 500, 000 books in a race to kindness".
Kherri Jean, Orion's mother, wrote on her Facebook page on July 31 that Orion has already collected over 120, 000 books. "Today was one of my favorite days!" she said. We had a 'Race to Kindness' free book fair for children and their parents. It was so great seeing kids looking for books they like and taking them home!"
And even if he hasn't met the goal of 500, 000 books, Orion has done far more to put books into the hands of poor children than most. "I's all about my moral (道德) responsibility to help people," Orion said. "You know, it's my responsibility to be able to see these people who need help know that I can help them. "

Think about what you like to wear on the weekend. There's a good chance that you like to put on a pair of blue jeans. At any moment, about half of the world's population is wearing jeans. But according to a new study, our love for jeans may be bad for Earth. Denim (牛仔布) might be putting some sea animals in danger.
You might wonder: Isn't denim made of cotton, a natural material? How can it become a danger to nature? Well, in the process of making jeans, cotton is treated with many types of man-made chemicals. Some improve the durability (耐用性) and feel; others give jeans their blue color. Every time we wash our jeans, tiny bits of denim come loose. They flow out of our washing machines, down the drain and into the world's rivers, lakes and oceans.
Scientists studied the Great Lakes in America and the Arctic Ocean in northern Canada. They found denim waste in all of the water they had collected. It is terrible that the harmful chemicals in denim have spread far and wide. Scientists aren't yet sure how these chemicals might harm animals.
In the study, the scientists also washed jeans to see how many bits of denim on average each pair would drop per wash. The answer was surprising: About 50,000. Not all of them make their way into the environment. Wastewater treatment plants(污水处理厂) hold back 83 to 99 percent of them. This may sound pretty good. However, one percent of 50,000 bits are still 500 per wash. Now think about the number of jeans around the world and the times each of them gets washed. As a result, a large amount of denim waste still gets into the environment.
Does this mean we shouldn't wear jeans? Probably not. "We need to buy fewer clothes and only wash them when we truly need to do it," says Sam Athey, one of the scientists. "You don't need to wash your jeans after having worn them only a couple of times."
The wife asked the husband, "In this life, what did you miss?"
When she was 25, the husband replied, "I missed a chance of finding a new job."
When she was 35, the husband angrily told her that he had just missed the bus.
At 45, the husband sadly said, "I missed the chance of seeing my closed relative before his last breath."
At 55, the husband said disappointedly, "I missed a good chance to stop working."
At 65, the husband hurriedly replied, "I missed my time to see the dentist."
At 75, the wife didn't ask the husband any more. The husband was kneeling in front of the very sick wife. Remembering the question, the wife used to ask him, this time he asked the wife the same question. The wife, with a smile and peaceful look, replied, "In this life, I didn't miss having you!"
The husband was full of tears. He always thought that they could be together forever. He was always busy with work. So much that he had never been thoughtful to his wife. The husband hugged his wife and said, "Over 50 years, how I had allowed myself to miss your deep love for me."
In the busy city life, there are many people who are always busy with work. These people revolve(围绕) their lives around their jobs. They are unwilling to spend time on health care. They miss the chance to be with their children in the growing up. They don't pay attention to the loved ones who care for them, and also their health.
Nobody knows what is going to happen one year from now. Life is not forever, so always value the things you have now. Express your thankfulness to your loved ones in words. Show your care with action. Treat every day as the last day of life. In this way, when you are gone, your loved ones would have nothing to feel sorry about.
